Artizan Artist Interviews - Michael MacDonagh Wood and Veronica Charlesworth
An interview with artists Michael MacDonagh Wood and Veronica Charlesworth who exhibited with Artizan Gallery in March 2018.
Recent arrivals to the South Devon area, expert watercolourists, and husband and wife duo, Michael MacDonagh Wood and Veronica Charlesworth, offer their first Devon exhibition since 2006, curating a selection of stunning watercolour and oil works that the pair are internationally renowned for.
Married in 1979 having both studied techniques across painting, etching, printmaking and graphic design, they spent several years honing their skills and following careers producing original lithographs and screenprints, with Veronica having set up a workshop in 1974 with two fellow artists. Both now work primarily in watercolours, finding the medium suits their respective focuses; for Veronica, this is capturing the natural world in vivid still life, floral works and landscape paintings, whilst for Michael, it is the capture of the fluid spaces where architecture and water meet in stunning Venice scenes that he has become widely known for.
Together and individually, they have exhibited extensively across the United Kingdom, Europe and the USA and supply galleries nationally with high quality, signed, limited edition prints. This exhibition offers the unique opportunity to view a curation of original works from both artists including a range of European and local scenes.

Words and Pictures. Preparing for the exhibition
jackiewills.co.uk
The two pieces of work in this clip feature the words:
To Love, Unloved etc. I came across this sad Japanese proverb in The British Library in London back in the 1980's. The words made me cry because at the time I loved a man who did not love me.
I decided to put these words onto textile for Artizan Gallery, Torquay forthcoming exhibition 'Words and Pictures 7 - 21 March 2015
How to set up a Pop-up Gallery to Sell Your Art

Their travels include Northern Germany, The United States, and Canadian locations like Alberta's Banff National Park and Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, Ontario’s Algonquin Park, Yukon’s Ivvavik National Park, Saskatchewan's Prince Albert National Park, Emma Lake, La Ronge and Cypress Hills. ENGLISH RIVIERA FILM FESTIVAL 2017
Cinematic past and future meet at the 2017 English Riviera Film Festival
Paignton Picture House is confirmed as one of the new partners in the ‘bigger and better ‘English Riviera Film Festival 2017, bringing Torbay’s historic cinema into play alongside the acting and directing hopefuls of the film industry of tomorrow.
The Film Festival has moved up a gear in what is now its third year, with a change of venue for the main day’s events to the Riviera Centre, which will play host to a packed programme of screenings, talks and interviews on Saturday June 17th. Other venues hosting satellite events throughout festival week will be The Blue Walnut cafe and cinema in Torquay, Paignton Library, Cockington Court, Artizan Gallery and Paignton Picture House, which will be opening its doors to interested parties for a tour of one of the most fondly regarded buildings in Torbay.
Festival Director John Tomkins, himself an independent film maker, says he has been thrilled by the positive response to the project. “The 2017 event really will be the English Riviera’s own Film Festival, a community partnership bringing together diverse organisations, individuals and businesses. There’s a genuine enthusiasm and will to bring the festival together and although 2017 really will be bigger and better than last year’s event, it will also, in a sense, be closer to home because of that collaboration from the Bay-wide community.”
John has always wanted to help promote the wealth of creative talent in Torbay and the independent film sector in Devon as a whole, which is why a highlight of this year’s Festival will be the inaugural Young Film-Maker of the Year Awards, with special trophies crafted by Our Glass of Cockington. The awards are the result of Tomkins’ collaboration with South Devon College. “I’m really pleased that this particular aspect of the festival has come to fruition, because it will enable raw film-making and acting talent to gain the wider exposure it deserves.”
Another example of the community aspect of this year’s festival is a focus on Brixham. Tomkins is working with South Devon College and the Brixfest committee to produce a film about the fishing town and the surrounding coast and countryside.
The Brixham film and the Film-Maker of the Year Awards will take place at the Riviera Centre on 17th June, and a full programme of events throughout the seven days of the English Riviera Film Festival will be available in March. You can keep up to date via the festival website at erfillmfest.co.uk or follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Claire Austin Reveals How Stephen Fry Helped Kickstart Her Business | The Shorely
Crafting away at Cockington Court’s Sea Change Studios is Award-Winning Claire Austin, a bespoke bridal accessories designer from Torquay. Being renowned as master of her craft, we went to Meet The Maker and find out more about her work.
What started as an idea for a cute Christmas preset for her friends, led to the birth of ‘Claire Austin England’, a bespoke bridal accessories company. After seeing some hair accessories in a shop, Claire’s mum helped create her piece while working at a West End Theatre in London. While the performance was on, Claire would twist and turn together her head pieces; word got out amongst the Shakespeare cast and one of the leads - Stephen Fry - tweeted to his 5 Million followers about Claire’s creation.
Seven years later, Claire now has her own studio in Cockington Court, where she invites brides-to-be to come have some tea and cake while designing bespoke accessories for their perfect day. Claire continuously pushes her craft into different areas; in 2017 she worked with Artizan Gallery in Torquay to present her work, which resulted in her becoming a back-to-back winner at the South West Wedding Awards in 2018 and 2019. We wanted to Meet-The-Maker, so we popped to Claire Austin’s studio at Cockington Court for a chat.
“Whatever the bride wants I like to translate from their head into a reality. The thought that I've made them a completely bespoke headpiece which they can treasure forever is why I do it.
I was working in a West End theatre about four years ago, it was coming up to Christmas and I went shopping with my mum and we saw these winter woollen headbands which were really beautiful with a lovely rose on them and I said I really want to make those for my friends for Christmas. So my mum sent me a package in the post with some notes on on how to do it. I used to make them when I worked on the stage door at the theatre and all my friends there and they all started asking me to make them for them so I did.
It was a Shakespeare show on at the time, Stephen Fry was in the show and he very, very kindly tweeted about me to his five million followers at the time. So I got loads of followers on Twitter which is amazing so I thought oh I'm gonna set up a little website now. And that was nearly seven years ago, and I can't believe it started from being on stage door making my little headbands to now having my own studio in Cockington.
Brides usually contact me on social media or they might send me an email and then I invite them to come into the studio for a design consultation with tea and cake. Then we go through some ideas they might show me how they can of their hair or photograph of their wedding dress or sometimes they even bring the wedding dress in which is very exciting. And then I design something completely bespoke, that no one in the world has got which they can treasure forever and feel just really beautiful on their wedding day.
A couple of years ago, I had a launch party at the Artizan Gallery in Torquay. Julie and Jacob there, they were fantastic to work with they were so helpful and really passionate about what I was doing. So I had this new collection that I wanted to show to everyone. so I invited current brides, past bride's, wedding industry people, friends, family and we had a lovely evening; I had live music, canapés, fizz… it was lovely and it was really nice to do it in an actual art gallery, it really showed off all of my pieces.
I'm from St. Marychurch in Torquay, so I've been coming to Cockington for years and I've always wanted a studio here but I've just never plucked up the courage. But last October I came here and I saw there was one to let and I thought I'm just going to go for it, I'm going to apply and I'm just so happy that I did it because it's just been the best thing I've ever done.” - Claire Austin, Bespoke bridal accessories designer.
If you want something totally bespoke for your big day or you maybe just want to meet the maker herself, then see Claire Austin at her Sea Change Studio at Cockington Court. For more information, visit Claire’s website:

Howards End Audiobook by E. M. Forster | Full Audiobook | Part 1
The book is about three families in England at the beginning of the twentieth century. The three families represent different gradations of the Edwardian middle class: the Wilcoxes, who are rich capitalists with a fortune made in the Colonies; the half-German Schlegel siblings (Margaret, Tibby, and Helen), who represent the intellectual bourgeoisie and have a lot in common with the real-life Bloomsbury Group; and the Basts, a couple who are struggling members of the lower-middle class. The Schlegel sisters try to help the poor Basts and try to make the Wilcoxes less prejudiced. The motto of the book is Only connect...
