Bonaventure Cemetery & Bootlegging
During The Prohibition Era there were 4 bootlegging families in Savannah of noteworthiness called The Big 4 by locals and all 4 families are buried in Bonaventure Cemetery. Its very rare to encounter a rusting moonshine still inside of Savannah proper but that's one of the beautiful things inside of Skidaway Island State Park just down the river from Bonaventure Cemetery itself. Shannon Scott takes some time to highlight some details and show viewers the moonshine still!
Ascension Crosses in Bonaventure (narration Shannon Scott)
Other than the lives of the people buried in cemeteries, and their stories, the other big way to explore & understand the places, and the people, are through the hidden and more apparent messages found inside of symbols, architecture, memorial styles and more. This is a discussion about why these crosses are placed in this particular position, etc. Enjoy!

Bonaventure Cemetery: A Visit To Danny Hansford's Grave (1960-1981)
For fans of Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil, Danny Hansford was known as Billy Hanson in the film version, but essentially was killed during a struggle with Jim Williams of Savannah. Ultimately, Williams cited self defense and due to a rather questionable crime scene, found himself being tried 4 times for the crime, the only man in the history of the state to ever endure this. Ultimately acquitted on the grounds of double jeopardy, and dying 6 months or so after acquittal. Williams and Hansford had been lovers & Hansford worked for Jim in some capacities within his antique shop. Because Hansford is portrayed as kind of a sexy street hustler and rebel without a cause, dead at 21, his grave has seen the kind of James Dean effect with many fans day and night, leaving signs of their visit. Not that this video gets deeply into the whole subject of the greater story or the greater life & times of Danny Hansford, for curious seekers, provides a glimpse and some other story details for thought. Enjoy.
Greenwich At Bonaventure Cemetery-Savannah GA's Own Biltmore House-Forgotten No Longer
Did you know that Savannah, Georgia, once had its own Biltmore House? Few people who visit Bonaventure Cemetery do.
We hope that this video will serve as an introduction to the grounds and gardens of Greenwich and as a revival of the memory of the grandeur that once existed in Savannah.
It is possible to visit Bonaventure today and overlook the few remnants of the opulent estate that once stood nearby. The man who built this beautiful mansion, Spencer P. Shotter, a successful businessman, who was a part of of the New York City social scene with the Vanderbilts, Rockefellers and Carnegies. He held a worldwide monopoly in the naval stores industry circa 1900, yet is completely unknown to the many tour groups and visitors navigating Bonaventure Cemetery, even though they pass directly by the Shotter family gravesite there. There are many stories in Bonaventure to be told other than the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil lore and tales of Johnny Mercer.
The massive three story, 40 room mansion, was adorned with a double colonnade of 26 columns on three of its sides. Its grand hall inside had 18 columns and was exquisitely decorated. The home’s interior and beautifully landscaped grounds held priceless, ancient works of art and statuary. Two of Savannah’s most prominent families exchanged ownership of Greenwich before a massive fire completely destroyed the mansion in 1923. One young child, who survived the fire by jumping from a second story window, is still with us today. Time and the unceremonious disposal of the ruins have allowed the Shotters and Greenwich to fade from memory.
In our research, we were able to acquire new photographs for our collection to complement our original hand colored postcards from the 1920s, including a panoramic photo showing the large greenhouse that was once a part of the grounds and copies of the original architectural plans of the mansion. Not always the best quality but all that remains.
The Gilded Age in Savannah ended amidst the ashes of Greenwich. We hope you’ll help us bring back to life the memory of this lost treasure and that you enjoy our film. Piano by Sam Hayman. Visit us at eArtFilm.com or at greenwichatbonaventure.com

Bonaventure Cemetery is probably the most famous cemetery in Savannah. This cemetery was featured in the book and movie, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. It is a great setting for taking photographs and in this case I used a digital infrared camera. This series, I left the color cast in the photos. I have also posted a version in black and white.

The Grave of Gracie Watson - Savannah GA
See more at
Among those resting for eternity in Savannah GA’s beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery is a little girl named Gracie Watson. Gracie was a beloved fixture at the Pulaski House during the late 1800s. She passed away at age six, just two days before Easter in 1889. Her grave marker is one of the more visited spots in Bonaventure. Visitors marvel at the life-like sculpture commissioned by her father. Little Grace is also rumored to still be seen playing in Johnson Square in downtown Savannah. Grab a tissue for this latest episode of Stories, Secrets and Sagas.
EPISODE TRANSCRIPT
Sometimes with almost the blink of an eye life can change abruptly. A once happy family, prosperous in business, can end up destitute and heartbroken with loss. This story -- one of a little girl living in Savannah, Georgia during the 1800s fits that scenario. Come with me, back in time to learn her story.
As the calendar of time slips back through the years, back to a time before automobiles, airplanes and telephones, back to a world of carriages and buggies, sailing ships and the date of July 10th, 1883 when a little girl named Gracie Watson was born in Savannah, Georgia.
Gracie was born the only child of W.J. and Frances Watson, a very happy couple who managed the well-known Pulaski House. The inn was popular, but even more popular amongst the guests was endearing little Gracie. Legend has it that she was the unofficial greeter at the hotel, and I can only imagine this little angel laughing with joy as she played in and around the inn.
Up until the 20th Century, the childhood mortality rate was very high. There were no vaccines or antibiotics, and sadly, in the early spring of 1889, Gracie became sick. What probably started as a bad cold got continually worse. Eventually, it became full-blown pneumonia. The doctor was called, and I am sure he tried everything in his power, but there was nothing to do but pray she would survive.
Sadly, just two days before Easter in 1889, Gracie passed. Having a daughter of my own, I cannot imagine the trauma and sorrow this must have caused her parents. I am sure they were devastated.
To help immortalize the tragic loss her father hired a well-known sculptor to create a life-sized, visually accurate grave marker of Gracie in Bonaventure Cemetery. Today the beautiful memorial sits quietly, frozen in time, a time when Gracie was alive and all was good for the Watson family. Adding even more to an already sad story, Gracie’s father eventually quit his job at the Pulaski Hotel. It could have been from the constant reminders of his little girl playing in the hotel or maybe he just needed a change, but whatever the case, he and Frances left Savannah for their original home in New England and never returned.
Gracie is all alone here, and it has been said that on some quiet evenings around Johnson Square in downtown Savannah, a spirit of a little girl can be seen walking around and playing in the square. In her mind, the hotel and her parents are still there. In her mind, she is probably looking for new guests to greet, but she waits, caught between time for those who will never come. We’ll see you next time on Stories, Secrets and Sagas.

Mausoleums of Bonaventure: Monuments To Grand Lives
Perceptibly, Bonaventure in its Golden Age was about the burial of the wealthier and you had to have some amount of money to bury there. Afterall, it was that grand plantation of the 18th century was it not? Although that's changed a great deal with the city running things, the mausoleums standing are a reminder of that age. But why are they there and so different? Well watch, listen and learn a few things about their history!
