Drive Around Acadia National Park and Up Cadillac Mountain
A quick video i took while driving around in Acadia National Park
Cadillac Summit, Cadillac Mountain, Acadia National Park, Maine, United States, North America
Cadillac Mountain is a mountain located on Mount Desert Island, within Acadia National Park. With an elevation of 1,528 feet (470 m), its summit is the highest point in Hancock County and the highest within 25 miles (40 km) of the shoreline of the North American continent between the Cape Breton Highlands, Nova Scotia and Mexican peaks 180 miles (290 km) south of the Texas border. The area first was inhabited by the Wabanaki people. In the fall of 1604, Samuel de Champlain observed a high-notched island composed of seven or eight mountains rising to bare-rock summits from slopes of birch, fir, and pine. Over four centuries later, the area remains essentially the same. The park is home to some 40 different species of mammalian wildlife. Among these are red and gray squirrels, chipmunks, white-tailed deer, moose, beaver (Castor canadensis), porcupine, muskrats, foxes, coyote, bobcats, and black bears. Many other marine species have been observed in the surrounding area and waters. Excavations of old Indian sites in the Mount Desert Island region have yielded remains of the native mammals. Bones of wolf, beaver, deer, elk, Gray seal (Halichoerus grypus), the Indian dog, and Sea Mink (Neovison macrodon), as well as large numbers of raccoon, lynx, wolf, muskrat, and deer. Although beaver were trapped to extinction on the island, two pairs of beaver that were released in 1920 by George B. Dorr at the brook between Bubble Pond and Eagle Lake have repopulated it. The large fire in 1947 cleared the eastern half of the island of its coniferous trees and permitted the growth of aspen, birch, alder, maple and other deciduous trees which enabled the beaver to thrive. Species that used to inhabit the island include the mountain lion (or puma) and the gray wolf. It is thought that these predators have been forced to leave the area due to the dramatic decrease in small prey and proximity to human activity.
Acadia National Park Maine | Cadillac Mountain Sunrise | RV Living to Bar Harbor Maine
On another National Geographic quest of RV living, I RV to Bar Harbor, Maine and tour Acadia National Park in Maine an have one of the most profound experiences to see the Cadillac Mountain sunrise come up over the islands and water. It's the first sunrise to see in the United States on top of Cadillac Mountain. Just make sure you get there early because there are hundreds of people who travel up the mountain very early to see the sunrise. Places like this is why I sold my house to experience beauty like this around North America.

Cadillac Mountain Summit - Acadia National Park - Maine - USA

Driving Acadia's Loop Road - Cadillac Mountain, Sand Beach, Thunder Hole - Acadia National Park
Our first day in Acadia National Park we drive the loop - checking out everything from Sand Beach to Cadillac Mountain! Our first stop was the visitors center, where we got the kids junior ranger books. Next, we hit Loop Road, the road that circles the park and takes visitors to all the main attractions. We dip our toes in the cool water at Sand Beach, listen to the waves at Thunder Hole, walk the nature trail at Jordan Pond and then drive up Cadillac Mountain to see the view. Acadia National Park is stunning and we can't wait to explore more!

This is a look at our winding road down the road from the peak of Cadillac Mountain in Maine. This is one of the most beautiful states I have ever visited and this National Park and view from the Mountain is amazing!
Hiking Cadillac Mountain - Acadia National Park, Maine - 2012
We climbed up Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park in Maine. The hike up the North Ridge Trail took us about 3 hours, going from essentially sea level up to 1,532 ft. along a rocky path. You have a strong feeling of accomplishment and beautiful views at the summit where you find restrooms, a gift shop and tourists in flip flops who rode the bus to the top.

Hiking the Cadillac Mountain South Ridge Trail
Cadillac Mountain in Acadia NP is the highest point in the park as well as the highest point on the US Atlantic coast.
The South Ridge Trail is among the longest in the park, taking in excellent views of forest, surrounding mountains, and the Cranberry Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The summit is often crowded with tourists who access it via the Park Loop Road. But leave the summit and you'll leave the crowds behind.

We left our hotel at 2:00 AM for the 2-1/2 ride to Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor Maine, USA. Our plan was to arrive atop Cadillac Mountain to view the sunrise. Cadillac Mountain is 1532 feet above sea level and the highest peak along the eastern seaboard of the USA.

Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, at 1,530 feet (466 meters), is the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard and the first place to view sunrise in the United States from October 7 through March 6. It is one of over 20 mountains on Mount Desert Island (MDI), Maine that were pushed up by earth's tectonic and volcanic forces millions of years ago. Were it not for the once enormous glaciers that sheared off their tops, they would be even higher than what we see today. You can easily see the results of this on a smaller scale by viewing the slopes on the Porcupine Islands in the distance. The North side is on the left and the steeper slope, or the down side, is on the right east side. The glaciers crept across the land here from the left to the right (in a southerly direction) and stretched out to sea as far as 400 miles (644 kilometers)!

Cadillac Mountain was named after the French explorer and adventurer, Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, Sieur de Cadillac in 1918. Prior to this, it was known as Green Mountain. From about 1534 through 1763, a substantial part of the North American continent was colonized and under the control of France. Duing this time, it was known as New France and at its peak in 1712, extended all the way from Newfoundland to the Rocky Mountains to the West and the Gulf of Mexico to the South. In 1688, Antoine Laumet de La Mothe Sieur de Cadillac was given ownership of over 100,000 acres of land along the present day Maine coast which included Mount Desert Island and areas next to present day Union River.
The elevation is 1,530 feet (466.34m)

Cadillac Mountain used to be called Green Mountain.
In the late 1800's there was a hotel on the summit called Green Mountain House Hotel.
Huge continental glaciers sheered off the tops of the mountains.
The last glacial period impacting this area ended about 18,000 years ago.

Fast Bike Ride Down Cadillac Mountain - Acadia National Park
Rode my bike down from the top of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park near Bar Harbor Maine. There is a slight uphill at the beginning, then the full-on downhill starts ate about 1:08. I may have been exceeding the speed limit slightly. This was on my homemade cyclocross/gravel bike with CX tires. I would have loved to have had my road bike with race tires. Maybe next time. Not knowing the corners, I actually took it relatively easy, not wanting to fly off the side of the mountain. The video was shot with my Sony point and shoot camera taped to the handlebars with electrical tape. LOL!
BTW, I know my top speed and I am taking the 5th.
FYI, I did this at 8:30am. They recommend cyclists who want to ride the mountain come early in the morning or later in the day when car traffic is light.
