Plaza del Arenal, Jerez De La Frontera, Andalusia, Spain, Europe
The Plaza del Arenal is located in the center of Jerez de la Frontera. Centuries ago was an Andalusian Musara to become, after the Reconquista, a scenario of duels and battles, taking hence its name (arenarium, place of battles). Today it is the main square of the city. It is the monument horse Miguel Primo de Rivera, Mariano Benlliure. It has trees and decorative swaths. The Plaza del Arenal took shape as a field just outside the walled city. It was near the Alcázar de Jerez, where kings and other distinguished visitors and be hosted by the Real door which communicated the square with the current Consistory street. His role as main square of the city was reinforced by the commercial importance that acquired the adjacent streets, especially Long Street. Until 1593 tournaments, duels or equestrian and bullfights could be held in the Market Place, the Llano de San Sebastián (currently Alameda Cristina) or Arenal Square. But from that year states that all games and public events are held only in the Arenal. They stressed the games of bulls and reeds and hauls genet very spectacular and competition mainly due to the rivalry between the families of the Dávila and Villavicencio. To witness these games until the seventeenth century it stood at the parapet of the wall that ran from the palace to the door Real, currently building alhóndiga. Subsequently stands stood in the square. The first payment bullfighting in the Plaza del Arenal was in 1655. Monarchs as the Catholic Kings, Felipe V, Carlos III, Isabel II or Alfonso XII were received at the Plaza del Arenal, decked. The streets around the square once had a different name. Corn Exchange, one that is next to the building of Los Arcos, Cot, opposite to the Arcos, is named for having been a shelter for orphans, portals Pavone, north of the square, the pulley where the street ends Lancería .
