Hong Kong Food Tour in *NORTH POINT* : Dai Pai Dong, Local Desserts and More!
Subscribe for more of my food adventures in Hong Kong:
On this food tour, I tried some of my favourite Hong Kong food staples at North Point, a less well-known neighbourhood on the Hong Kong Island!
1st stop:
金鳳涼果專門店 / Kam Fung Dried Fruits Specialty Store
Address: G/F, Kin Bong Building, 112-114 Java Road, North Point
- Dried mangoes: addictive bites made with mangoes from Thailand or Philippines. You can get the prepackaged ones from any supermarket and some convenience stores in Hong Kong, but if you pass by a dried fruits specialty store like this one (you can spot it instantly since they all store their goods in huge glass jars, as seen in the video), don't miss the chance to stock up on these sweets!
- Dried plums: Locals eat it as snacks or remedy for curing sea sickness. If your tummy isn't feeling well, these dried plums are here to help!
2nd stop: 東寶小館 / Tung Po Kitchen
Address: 2/F Java Road Municipal Services Building, 99 Java Rd, North Point
- Dai Pai Dong: The Cantonese term refers to cooked food stalls that are either located inside local wet markets (where everyone shops for groceries) or on the street. You can find the open air dai pai dongs in Shum Shui Po, Wo Che (which is in Shatin) and Central etc.
- Recommended dishes at Tung Po Kitchen: Stir fry clams with black beans, fried drunken prawns, stir fry razor clams with black beans
- Don't forget to order a few bottles of beer to share (served in Chinese bowls with the words Battle Bowls engraved on them) and start your own beer battles!
3rd stop: 翠苑甜品專家 / Tsui Yuen Desserts
Address: G/F, 5 Shu Kuk Street, North Point
* They have several locations around in Hong Kong, but the branch on Shu Kuk Street is the one we went to in this video.
Recommended Dishes: Mango pomelo sweet soup, sweet potatoes ginger soup with black sesame tang yuan (Chinese sticky rice balls), ginger and milk pudding (I prefer the hot ones).
Recipe for sweet potatoes ginger soup
1. Boil water in pot
2. Chop up 1-2 sweet potatoes in cubes and ginger in slices
3. Throw your sweet potatoes cubes into the pot
4. Add the sweet potatoes and ginger into the pot and let it cooked
5. Add a few handful of sugar into the pot based on how sweet you want!
(Sorry for this crappy recipe write-up, but that's how I made my sweet potatoes and ginger soup at home when I was living in Canada and homesick!)
* Filmed with my Panasonic Lumix G6.
* Special thanks to Ocean K for filming this video with me so spontaneously!
Hong Kong GLOBAL FOOD TOUR!
I thought a lot before posting this video. I filmed and edited this about 3 months ago, before the HK protests had hit full speed. I don't want to come across as insensitive by posting this (a fun and food related HK video) during such a turbulent time. But the fact is, Hong Kong is and always will be one of my favourite places, especially when it comes to eating!
And I figured, the world always needs more positivity. So I decided to share this. Here's a fun, non-political video about Hong Kong! Enjoy!
love you all xx

Hong Kong From Above Tai Po Sha Lo Tong 2016 12 23
Hong Kong From Above
Location: Tai Po, Hong Kong
On Friday morning a took a trip up to Sha Lo Tung. Even though you are only a few KM from the heart of Tai Po, it's a place where you can get away from the big city feel.
The place is made of 2 villages, Cheung Uk and Lei Uk. Although, Chueng Uk, as far as I know, is the only place with residents. Right now they are in the process of revitalising the area and restoring farmland.
Also you can relax at the small tofu restaurant. For enquires Ph: 98545156.
How to get there? Well you can take the 20P from Tai Po Market MTR or the 20M from Tai Po Centre Bus Station. These green mini buses will take you to Fung Yuen. Follow the signs to the Butterfly Park. Next go past the Butterfly Park and take the first path on the right. This will take up to the road to Sha Lo Tung. When you get to the road turn left and follow the road the end. About 1.5hour easy walk from Fung Yuen.

How Louisiana Crayfish Became China’s National Dish
In China, crayfish is king. Chinese people consume 90% of the world’s crayfish every year. But the species they eat is not actually native to China. Just a few decades ago, it wasn’t even considered food. So how did crayfish end up becoming such a beloved dish? We talked to some crayfish enthusiasts and experts to find out.
