Kendall Mountain Run Silverton, CO July 17, 2010.mp4
On July 17, 2010, I ran (well, jogged, then walked, then crawled) the Kendall Mountain Run Half Marathon in Silverton, Colorado. This run starts in the town of Silverton at 9,318 feet in elevation and climbs to the peak of Kendall Mountain at 13,066 feet. About the last half mile is a scramble straight up the peak, sometimes on all fours. I'm so glad someone recommended gloves and gaiters to keep the dirt and pebbles out of my shoes. This was my first time, and it (me) wasn't pretty or fast, but the terrain and scenery were spectacular. I am a good example for anyone wanting to take a challenge but worried about time. I came in last at 6 hours, 46 minutes, but I finished!! And I'm glad I did because making it to the top of the Kendall Mountain Peak was so worth the effort. The views, as you'll see in this video, are phenomenal. That's Kendall Mountain behind me at the finish line in the photo at the end of this video. Stay tuned for next year's run!!

Picayne and Placer Gulches 4wd Trail- Silverton, Colorado
For the full 4wd trail guide please visit:
Picayne and Placer Gulch is a gorgeous 4wd route offering scenic vistas of the San Juan Mountains and traverses an area rich with mining history. This area provides gorgeous wildflowers in the peak season of late July and early August which enhances the already spectacular vistas found in all directions. Some of the best-preserved mine structures found in Colorado can be found along this trail. The Sound Democrat Mill is one of the finest examples and still possesses all of its machinery still in place, from its stamp batteries to its Wilfley tables. This allows visitors the ability to see step by step how precious minerals were processes out of the raw ore that entered the mill. More information on the process of gold mining can be found Here.

Eureka Gulch 4wd Trail- Silverton, Colorado
For the 4wd full trail guide please visit:
Eureka Gulch 4wd Trail is a gorgeous route than climbs up to the location of what could have been one of the most disastrous mining accidents to ever happen in the mining industry, the collapse of Lake Emma as a result of the Sunnyside Mine. The Sunnyside Mine's tunnels had extended themselves to sit directly under Lake Emma, 70 feet above to reach a rich gold vein located there. On Sunday, June 4, 1978, on the only day of the week that the mine was completely shut down, The lake burst through into the empty mine tunnels. This incident completely drained Lake Emma and left the empty basin that can be seen at the end of the route. First-hand accounts of the Sunnyside Mine incident can be discovered in the book Silverton Gold written by Allen G. Bird.

Silverton Colorado Avalanche Debris Fields: 2019
The winter of 2018-2019 saw very large amounts of snowfall and historic avalanche cycle across much of the western United States. We drove down to Silverton, CO in the early spring to check out the damage. These slides were huge and many were even larger than this one. A slide near Animas Forks was estimated to be 100ft deep across the road and was inaccessible without a snowmobile.

San Juan Ski Mountaineering from Molas Pass to Sultan Mountain to Silverton
On Sunday, April 14th 2019, Peter and I committed to this mountaineering adventure. We were fully prepared with avalanche gear, proper training, and a plan for the day. The most dangerous part of the adventure was boot packing across the steep southern slope below the saddle between Grand Turk and Sultan Mountain.
Silverton, Colorado during the Hardrockers Holiday 2013 HQ
This video is Dedicated to Tiffany-Shaun Wilkins for sharing their weekend during the Hardrockers Holiday and giving me the opportunity to ride my mountain bike in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Shaun said that pictures don't do it justice and he's right but sometimes I need reminders of where I've been. So on that cool morning in August I took all the mental pictures I could while riding through the beautiful streets of this turn of this century mining town looking into the thin layers of clouds across the backdrop of the beautiful mountains wanting to capture every minute during my 6 mile route.
The Road to Silverton
This Video is dedicated to Shaun Wilkins for giving me an insider's view of one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Nestled high in Colorado's stunning San Juan Mountains at 9,318 feet and formally incorporated in 1885, Silverton is a statutory Colorado municipality serving approximately 600 full-time residents along with dozens of unique businesses that cater to Silverton's many thousands of annual visitors. Silverton boasts, preserves, and celebrates a rich mining history with a storied Old West past which brings those interested in our nation's cultural heritage here on a year-round basis. In summer months, while hosting outdoor enthusiasts of every kind, Silverton also serves as the termination point for the dramatic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad excursion and we are also known world wide for our acclaimed July 4th all day celebration and fireworks. And in the winter, Silverton is becoming well-known as a world-class alpine sport destination. The Town itself offers two wonderful amenities depending on the season. Winter visitors should plan to take advantage of the Kendall Mountain Ski Area and Recreation Center, which offers an outdoor skating rink and a single-lift ski area that is both affordable and inviting to beginners and family groups. The beautiful Kendall Mountain facility is also available for conferences and weddings every month of the year. And during late spring, summer and early autumn months, the Town operates the majestic Molas Lake Campground, located minutes from Town, but offering campers -- day or multi-day; tent or RV -- breathtaking views in every direction of the mighty San Juan terrain.
