Kilauea Iki Trail - Top 10 Bucket List Hikes (Volcanoes National Park, Big Island, Hawaii)
This was one the best hikes in Volcanoes National Park! It seems to be the one that everybody does. You get great views from the rim, then inside the crater, it's like nothing else! You feel like you'll be swallowed by the volcano at any point! lol... It's definately a bucket list hike!
Kīlauea Iki Trail
Kilauea Iki Trail and Crater Rim Trail is a heavily trafficked loop trail located near Pahala, Hawaii, Hawaii that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips and is accessible year-round.
Great day hike down into and across a solid lava lake in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Klauea Iki Trail starts in the rain forest on the crater's rim. The trail descends 400 feet through the rain forest to the crater floor. Hikers will cross the still-steaming crater floor, past the gaping throat of the vent that built Pu'u Pua'i cinder cone, and return to your starting point via the crater's rim.

Hiking The World's Most Active Volcano - Day 2 in Big Island, Hawaii
We strolled across a smoking volcanic wasteland on the Kilauea Iki Trail in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park!!!
Distance Round Trip: 4 miles
Elevation Change: ~400 ft from parking lot to the bottom of the crater
The Kilauea'iki Trail is one of the must do signature hikes in Hawaii Volcano National Park on the Big Island. The trailhead parking lot sits along the crater rim, offering spectacular views of the main Halema'uma'u Crater smoking in the distance. That isn't the primary destination though; instead, the trail drops from the rim down to a blackened, still steamy lava lake leftover from a 1959 eruption.
By following the trail counterclockwise (recommended), you'll enjoy a leisurely rainforest hike along the crater rim. After about a mile the trail leaves all vegetation behind and rapidly descends to the crater floor alongside a giant spatter cone formed during the original eruption. From here it is a long, exposed hike across a fascinating volcanic landscape. There are multiple cracks and steam vents along the way -- you can't miss main one smoking in the middle. Don’t be shy and walk right up to the edge!

Hiking the Kilauea Iki Trail from the Rainforest to Crater Floor, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
This is a portion of the Kilauea Iki Trail in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. We chose to hike the Crater Rim Trail portion first. This video is of the descent from the Crater Rim Trail to the Crater floor on the west side of the crater. When you do a search about this hike it will list it as challenging but I didn't find it to be. It was about a 4 mile hike that anyone in decent shape could do. Just wear decent shoes and be ready for it to be a bit chilly and windy in the crater.
Here's some general information about the hike.
At the top, just east of the main caldera, lies the crater of Kilauea Iki ('Little Kilauea'). The scene of one of Hawaii's most violent volcanic displays, the 1959 eruption saw lava shoot 1,900 ft into the air. This varied trail, considered by many to be the best in the Park, gives hikers a fascinating close-up view of the site of this eruption.
The trail winds down the wall of Kilauea Iki and heads west across the eerie crater floor, covered by hardened lava flows and surrounded by cliffs. After passing the vent of the 1959 eruption, the trail climbs out of the crater and reaches a junction shortly after, at the 2.4 mile/3.9 km mark.
Hikers at the bottom of the Kilauea Iki Crater. This diverse hike takes you through rain forests engulfed in gigantic ferns and dry rocky lava beds with intermittent steam vents and sulfur banks. This trail descends 400 feet through rain forest, crosses the crater floor, passes Pu'u Pua'i cinder cone, and returns via the crater's rim. Of interest: Rain forest, birds, insects, 1959 lava lake, steam vents, cinder and spatter cone.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, An Introduction
Written and Produced by Donald B MacGowan
Narrated by Frank Burgess
Still and Video Photography by Donnie MacGowan and Frank Burgess
Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is a magical, spiritual, wondrous, strange and beautiful place. The Park comprises a land of great contrasts and contradictions ranging from dry as dust desert to teeming tropical jungle; from frigid sub-arctic wasteland to steaming black sand beaches and rivers of flowing lava. Easily the most captivating part of any trip to The Big Island, most people don't think to schedule enough time to explore this amazing place and wind-up hurrying through, wishing they'd saved more time to see all the wonders of the goddess's home. Established in 1916, the Park is almost half a million acres in area, about the size of O'ahu, but lots more interesting.
The star attractions in the Park are a pair of active volcanoes; Mauna Loa is the largest mountain on earth and Kilauea is most active volcano on earth. However, there are numerous other wonders from lava tubes to crawl down, black sand beaches with sea turtles to watch, mysterious petroglyph fields to explore, tropical jungles to hike through, endangered bird species to find, happy-face spiders to amuse and an otherworldly volcanic landscape so fresh it's still steaming. In places it's so fresh it's still flowing.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Gets Poor State Of The Parks Score (July 2008)
MORE:
HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, Hawaii (July 2008) - A new State of the Parks report is issued for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which rates poorly in natural resources, while only scoring fair in cultural resources.
In this video, rangers and volunteers demonstrate the challenges facing the staff on a media tour up Mauna Loa Road, where a relatively small staff must creatively combat the invasive species that threaten endangered, native plants. Volunteers also help exhibit the successes, like the blossoming of the rare Mauna Loa silversword.

This is another hike up Mauna Ulu in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This time I decided to use my Handycam instead of the GoPro attached to my chest. We also went up Pu'u Huluhulu.
