Leadville Missignment: Bats in the Belfry #101.
In this video the Leadville Today Missignment crew heads out for their first mission to verify reports of hundreds of bats in the Leadville National Fish Hatchery attic. Located several miles south of Leadville, Colorado, the National Fish Hatchery plays host to thousands of tourists who visit the popular facility to learn about the US Forest Service's fish hatchery program.
Little do they know that the building also plays host to hundreds of little brown bats living in the maternity roost in the belfry. This video highlights the crew's discovery.

Hotchkiss National Fish Hatchery - Colorado
Hotchkiss, itself, is located about 370 kilometres (230 miles) southwest of Denver, Colorado. Here is what the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has to say about this facility on their website:
Hotchkiss National Fish Hatchery is located about 20 miles east of Delta, Colorado, near the town of Hotchkiss. The hatchery consists of a hatchery building with a small visitor center and tank room, residences, 32 outdoor concrete raceways, 24 nursery tanks, and 6 earthen ponds.
Hotchkiss National Hatchery was established in 1967 as part of the Colorado River Storage Project Act. Located on 58 acres of forest surroundings on the North Fork of the Gunnison River, the hatchery's cold, clean water supply comes from the adjacent Tommy Dowell Spring.
Tommy Dowell Spring was created in the 1930's by an earthquake near Salt Lake City, whose tremors also affected the Hotchkiss area. The spring has a constant water temperature of 56 degrees Farenheit and flows from 2,200 to 5,000 gallons per minute, providing the ideal conditions for trout production.
As the aquatic habitat changes due to natural (drought, flood, habitat destruction) or human (over-harvest, pollution, habitat loss due to development and dam construction) influences, the reproduction of fish in the wild declines. Stocking of fish is one of the many management strategies used by biologists to help replenish the populations for years to come.

Stocking Greenback Cutthroat Trout in Colorado
Colorado Parks and Wildlife together with members of the Greenback Recovery Team including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, Colorado Trout Unlimited, the Bureau of Land Management and the National Park Service stocked 800 greenback cutthroat trout up Dry Gulch. The greenback cutthroat trout is listed as “Threatened” under the Endangered Species Act and is Colorado’s State Fish. The stocking is part of an aggressive recovery effort implemented to replicate this population. Greenbacks are currently stocked in three locations across Colorado: Bear Creek near Colorado Springs and in Dry and Herman Gulch by the Eisenhower Tunnel.

Day-to-Day Life at Quilcene National Fish Hatchery
Current day-to-day life at Quilcene National Fish Hatchery comprises a focus on the care of fish species such as summer chum or winter steelhead, including their feeding, pond maintenance, and health. The hatchery also works closely alongside certain tribes, not only providing them with fish, but creating a combined effort in restoration of fish populations. Fortunately, the hatchery is open to the public year round for tours, and participates in numbers of community outreach activities. The hatchery is always looking for visitors to come and explore the grounds, and if it's the right time of year, catch a glimpse of adult salmon in their fight back up the Big Quilcene River for spawning!

493-The Tragedy at Oak Creek, A Special Place Remembered
This is a story of returning to the Oak Creek, California area 10 years after a natural tragedy occurred there. This place will always be a special for me and takes me back to my younger years in the Eastern Sierra.
This area had been burned in an intense, lightning sparked range fire in July 2007 destroying the Ashworth Ranch.
On July 12, 2008 tropical moisture moved through here causing thunderstorms and pockets of intense rain.
In the late afternoon, a cell of intense rain was centered in the eastern sierra Baxter Pass area, just west of this location.
Around 5 pm, water, sediment, and debris began moving down tributaries in the Oak Creek drainage area, eventually concentrating in the north and south forks of Oak Creek.
At about 5:30 pm a hyper-concentrated flow destroyed a motorhome parked here at the Oak Creek campground on the north fork of Oak Creek, and its sole occupant jumped into the flow but he managed to survive.
By then, the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery had been severely damaged along with several Fish and Game employee residences.
