Special historic site - Matsuyama Castle. The castle is one of Japan's twelve original castles (castles which have survived the post-feudal era since 1868 intact). It is also one of the most complex and interesting castles in the Japan. It is located on Mount Katsuyama, a steep hill in the city center that provides visitors with a bird's eye view of Matsuyama and the Seto Inland Sea. There are about 200 cherry trees (on the castle grounds) which makes it a lovely cherry blossom spot typically around late March to early April each year, Matsuyama, Japan 2018. Rare in Japan, Matsuyama Castle (松山城) located in Ehime Prefecture, Shikoku, is one of Japan’s “original castles”. Remaining undamaged from war, there are only 12 castles in Japan which are intact since the post-feudal era.
Being located on Mount Katsuyama, visitors can enjoy the view of Matsuyama city and Seto Inland Sea from the castle grounds. With the approximately 200 cherry trees planted on the grounds, it is a popular hanami (cherry blossom viewing) spot in the spring (typically from late March to early April).
Matsuyama Castle was originally built between 1602 and 1628 and was given to the Matsudaira family (relatives of Japan’s ruler, Tokugawa shogun) in 1635. However, the original five-storied castle was destroyed by lightning and the reconstructed to its current three storied tower in 1820.
A typical feudal castle, the main circle of defense, Honmaru is located on the top of hill. Access to the Honmaru is through multiple gates which are well-defended. Matsuyama Castle is one of the few castles with multiple wings. The main keep has a secondary keep and multiple turrets. Visitors can see displays of Matsuyama’s history as well as information about the feudal period within the castle.
Matsuyama Castle Keep
Hours: 9:00 to 17:00 (until 16:30 in December and January; until 17:30 in August)
Admission ends 30 minutes before closing time.
Closed: December 29th

Though the castle is located on top of a steep hill, there is a ropeway as well as a chairlift making the access fairly easy. Visitors can view the beautiful hillside scenery from the chairlift. For more adventurous visitors, it is possible to climb up the hill from the ropeway station or the Ninomaru Garden. It would take about 15 minutes.
Ropeway & Chairlift

Chairlift: 8:30 to 17:00 (around the year)
Closed: Opened all year round
Admission: 510 yen (round trip), 270 yen (one way)
Lying at the base of Mount Katsuyama is the Ninomaru Garden. This is the former site of the second circle of defense (Ninomaru). The Ninomaru was the lord’s residence and where his offices were located as it provided an easier access to the city than Honmaru.
However, visitors cannot visit the palace buildings as the buildings no longer exist. Instead, Ninomaru has been transformed into a park, preserving the layout of the former castle palace through its gardens, elevated grounds and ponds.

Matsuyama is the capital city of Ehime Prefecture on Japan’s Shikoku Island. It’s known for its central Dōgo Onsen Honkan bathhouse, dating from the Meiji Period, with ornate, tiered wooden buildings.
Nearby is Shiki Memorial Museum, dedicated to Masaoka Shiki’s haiku poetry. To the west is the restored, feudal-era Matsuyama Castle, with its hilltop gardens and seasonal cherry blossoms.

Matsuyama Castle Tour - 松山城 - Matsuyama Ehime Japan
Tour of Matsuyama Castle indoor area - 松山城 - Matsuyama Ehime Japan
Matsuyama Castle, Japan, October 30, 2013
The city of Matsuyama on Shikoku island is quite big but feels very provincial and comfortable. You are now away from the big cities of the mainland.
The main tourist attraction must be the Matsuyama Castle that is situated on a hill overlooking the city. You can reach the castle by a ropeway if you don't want to walk.
The view from the castle is spectacular. You can overlook the city and the Seto inland sea. We were lucky to be there when the sun was setting. The castle itself was very beautiful and apart from other castles in Japan there where actually a lot of interesting exhibitions inside. You could among other things dress up like a samurai.
The stairs in the castle were very steep and slippery without shoes especially because we carried our son of 2 years of age. Fortunately there were a short cut rout (also atypical in Japan) so we missed some floors.
We found the number of tourists relative limited. I can highly recommend a visit to this place.
If you want to see how we sailed to and from Matsuyama see my video on this:
The video contains stills and HD video.

JAPAN'S OLDEST HOTSPRING TOWN
Ehime is a Japanese prefecture covering the northwest quarter of Shikoku Island and dozens of smaller islands in the Seto Inland Sea. In Matsuyama, the prefectural capital, a cable car and chairlift rise to Matsuyama Castle. Established in the 1600s, the castle is set on a plateau in verdant grounds. Dogo Onsen is one of Japan’s oldest hot springs, with a spa resort centered on its 19th-century public bathhouse.
