The Middle Fork of the Salmon River | Idaho (Highlight)
The Middle Fork of the Salmon River in the middle of the Frank Church Wilderness. This is arguably the most famous stretch of water in Idaho. When people talk about river trips you must take you will hear the Grand Canyon and the Middle Fork of the Salmon. Hit the Middle Fork for a once in a lifetime experience. It's not hyperbole to catch 100 fish in one day out here. Check out paradise in the Frank Church Wilderness with Helfrich River Outfitters in their beautiful wooden drift boats.

Middle Fork of the Salmon River 2015 - IDAHO
Some very cool footage from our float down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River with OARS, in beautiful Idaho... This footage is put to the music of three songs by my favorite performer, Malcolm Holcombe... Shot with a GoPro camera, July 2nd - 7th of 2015... Thanks to the Middle Fork, for providing the whitewater and the scenery, to Malcolm Holcombe, for all the great music he has provided us through the years, and to my daughter Brooke, who I could have NEVER put together a video like this without... These are three things that I don't think that I can live without... If you like the music used in this video but are not familiar with this artist, visit malcolmholcombe.com and treat yourself to some Malcolm Holcombe... If you think you'd like to spend some time in a setting like this, contact OARS at oars.com and find a trip that is right for you... For my money, it just doesn't get any better than getting away from it all for several days on the Middle Fork, and the good folks at OARS are very good at what they do, and ALWAYS go above and beyond to ensure that everyone on one of these trips enjoys it to the fullest... Hope you enjoy this video at least half as much as I enjoyed shooting it, but good luck on that!

LEARN MORE ABOUT RAFTING THE MIDDLE FORK SALMON RIVER
A 5 or 6 Day expedition in the River of No Return Wilderness in a remote region of Idaho offers one of the most legendary rafting trips in the world. The crystal clear waters of the Middle Fork drop over 3,000 feet over its course of 100 miles on the Middle Fork Salmon River rafting trip.
The Middle Fork of the Salmon River, home of the Shoshone-Bannock Tuka-Deka
The Middle Fork of the Salmon flows through the heart of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. As you travel the 104 miles of the Middle Fork, you will see many cultural values present on the river banks of the Middle Fork. This is the home of the Tuka-Deka Sheep Eaters Native American Tribes. The Tuka-Deka were hunter-gatherer people who lived in the river corridor area until 1879. The Sheep Eater war of 1879 ended the permanent residence of the ancestors to the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, the Tuka-Deka.
The Middle Fork of the Salmon has many irreplaceable cultural resources. Many of the sites have house depressions left behind by the Sheep Eater Indian Tribes. Please respect these sites by camping in designated areas. And leave artifacts where you find them. Help us preserve the stories of the past that are all over the river corridor in the form of pictographs by not touching them.
As river users, you can be active stewards in protecting the resources for future generations to enjoy as you visit the Middle Fork of the Salmon.

MIDDLE FORK SALMON RIVER IDAHO
Float idaho raft trip down the middle fork of the salmon river. Awesome trip.
Cougar Ranch and Middle Fork of the Salmon River
In 2018 the Idaho Fish and Game, working with the Idaho Aviation Association, opened a new airstrip in the Frank Church Wilderness along the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. This was my first time visiting the strip. It’s 1,400’ with decent approaches from either direction. Landing west has a more favorable go-around option than landing east. DISCLAIMER: For anyone watching this looking for “how to do it”, when I go back I will fly the approach a little differently. It’s a pretty good altitude change from the saddle to the strip. For MY aircraft and how it’s configured, I think the approach would be better to stay over the left bank of the river and lose the altitude more slowly during the approach. Either that or use the flat wing approach method. By keeping the turn back to the strip closer, I had a little bit more energy than I wanted coming over the saddle. As always, your results...and needs...may vary. Fun strip!

Sage - Middle Fork of the Salmon River
Born in a small town in far northern California, Sage McDermott has spent much of his life exploring and working on rivers across the western United States. Having taken his first trip at the young age of eight months old, Sage grew up kayaking and rafting with his family, and their small rafting company. As he grew up, his passion for rivers and the people he met, led him to pursue a guiding career as well. Sage has guided professionally for the last eight years on river ranging from the Skykomish in Washington State to the Arkansas in Colorado. His years of travel led him inevitably to the Middle Fork of the Salmon in Idaho. He currently splits his year between Idaho, and Steamboat Colorado, where he is a ski patroller. Always one for adventure, Sage continues to search the world for exciting new rivers, gorgeous vistas and, wonderful people.
Middle Fork Salmon River
Our guided camp vacations are usually five or six days on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho. The Middle Fork drops 2750 feet in elevation during your 100 mile float. Compare the bonus of great rapids and geothermal hot springs to other trips!
Scenery and flora change from high mountains blanketed with pine trees to the Impassable Canyon dotted with Mountain Mahogany and sagebrush on high cliffs. The river current flows with no long eddies; the water is crystal clear. No roads or motors are allowed. Reservations are now accepted. June trips will be high water, as snow pack is good. Few outfitters have high water equipment like we do.
Arrive in Stanley, Idaho one day early if possible. Arrival mid-trip or on launch day may require a private flight from Boise, McCall, Sun Valley, Salmon, or Montana. Hike or mountain bike in Stanley's Sawtooth Mountains.
Check out bags or tents early!
Wildlife is abundant on the River of No Return Wilderness area. Native Cutthroat Trout almost jump into the boat. Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep are often sighted. Mule Deer sometimes wanter into camp. There are numerous reasons to float this fine ecosystem. My family has been a public outfitter here since 1964.
Whitewater rapids are a thrill-a-minute in the comfortable guide-oared, self-bailing rafts. With Masoner splash shields on some rafts, our equipment is really spiffy! Inflatable kayaks and guided paddle boats are for the action-seeking guests. This vacation is designed with you in mind. Wetsuits are provided for adventuresome high-water trips. Spincast or flyfish between rapids with your helmsman's help. September offers Chukar shooting and large, native spawning trout. Fishing tackle is provided.
Hike, fish, swim, throw horseshoes, or take a shower at camp. Sleeping bags, thick pads, roomy tents, waterproof packs, potable water, books, and maps are furnished for camp comfort. We support your recreation interest. The cargo boat is loaded with beverages, ice, and hors d'oeuvres! Our guides lead and teach youth teams or other guests while on wilderness hikes or away from camp. You just relax!
Meals are cleanly prepared away from the campfire unless closed Dutch Ovens are used. Lunches are unique. Special dietary requests are met. Helmsmen become hiking and fishing guides or chefs with aprons in camp! Lawn chairs and tables are convenient. Dine at the table, sit near the river and watch eagles, or fish and eat late!
Not all float trips are the same. We take pride in our experience, safety, fishing and hiking interests, quality equipment, and service to you.
