Geography
Miyako-jima lies approximately 300 kilometres (190 mi) southwest of Okinawa Island and 400 kilometres (250 mi) east of Taipei, Taiwan.[1] With an area of 158.70 square kilometres (61.27 sq mi), Miyako is the fourth-largest island in Okinawa Prefecture.[2] The island is triangular in shape and is composed of Ryukyuan limestone.[1] Miyako-jima is subject to drought and is frequently struck by typhoons.[1]
Miyako-jima is well known for its beauty, particularly the Eastern Cape (東平安名岬 Higashi-hennazaki), which is considered by many as one of the most beautiful spots in Japan. Other notable locations include Maehama beach, the German Cultural Center, Painagama Beach, and the sights on Irabu-jima. There are three islands close by which are connected by bridges to Miyako-jima, Irabujima (as of early 2015), Ikemajima (池間島 Ikema-jima), and Kurimajima (来間島 Kurima-jima). The Miyako language, one of several Ryukyuan languages, is spoken here.

Main article: Typhoon Maria (2018)
A tropical depression formed on July 3. On the next day, the system intensified into Tropical Storm Maria. Early on July 5, Maria intensified into a severe tropical storm, while the JTWC classified the system as a Category 1 typhoon. Explosive intensification ensued, and later that day, Maria became a super typhoon and the first Category 5-equivalent storm of this basin since Nock-ten in 2016. Shortly afterwards, Maria underwent an eyewall replacement cycle, and it weakened below super typhoon status the following day. By July 8, however, Maria had completed the eyewall replacement cycle and regained Category 5-equivalent intensity.
Current storm information
As of 06:00 UTC on July 10, Typhoon Maria (Gardo) is located near 24.7°N 125.6°E and 153 nmi (283 km; 176 mi) south-southwest of Kadena Air Base, Okinawa. 10-minute sustained winds are at 175 km/h (110 mph), while 1-minute sustained winds are at 205 km/h (125 mph), with gusts of up to 250 km/h (155 mph). The minimum barometric pressure is at 940 hectopascals (27.76 inHg), and the system is moving west-northwestward at 16 knots (30 km/h; 18 mph).

Miyako Island (Miyakojima), located 300 kilometers south of Okinawa Main Island, is known for some of Japan's best beaches and as a great destination for diving and snorkeling in the coral reefs.
The island is the fourth largest island in Okinawa Prefecture. It is mostly covered by sugar cane fields and a few towns, among which Hirara is the largest with a moderate range of eating place, such as restaurants and bars. Resort hotels and pensions are found across the island. Unlike other parts of Okinawa, there are no habu snakes in Miyako.
Miyako Island offers a small range of other attractions, including places of natural beauty and cultural interest, and a couple of elegant bridges to neighboring islands.
Tropical Botanical Garden
It is a spacious park for recreation and the study of tropical plants in inland Miyako. Several walking trails with the over 1600 types of plants that include trees, bushes and flowers from Miyako and from Hawaii, Taiwan and Southeast Asia.
Admission: Free
Access Information:

Hundreds celebrate 'Coming of Age Day' in Okinawa
Four men were reportedly detained by police after being caught riding an illegally modified motorbikes without a helmet while celebrating Coming of Age Day on Sunday in Chatan, Okinawa.
Young kimono-dressed men and women gathered for the ceremony, where officials held speeches on the meaning of adulthood. New Japanese adults were posing for a group photograph when suddenly four men in motorcycles drove in the street of Chatan's Mihama American Village violating traffic rules.
The men allegedly belong to the Japanese 'bosozoku' youth subculture associated with customised motorcycles.
On their way to the ceremony, some reportedly drunk new adults scuffled with the police. The police physically confronted the crowd in order to quell and disperse it.
One of the ceremony participants said that she attended the ceremony thinking of expressing gratitude to her parents, adding after the ceremony, I am planning to give flowers to my parents and say 'Thank you'.
Coming of Age Day is considered a Japanese national holiday: this day celebrates young people who have reached the age of 20, which is the age of maturity in Japan, as youngsters are now legally permitted to smoke, drink alcohol and vote.

The Amazing Mori Building Digital Art Museum and $75 Strawberries - Japan Vlog Series Part 2
We've got tons of fun stuff to explore in Part 2 of our Japan vlog series! We spent most of the day exploring Odaiba, including the amazing TeamLab Borderless MORI Building DIGITAL ART MUSEUM: teamLab Borderless exhibition. We then wander through Palette Town, Venus Fort and Aqua Town and pay a visit to the giant Gundam statue (and enjoy some giant cotton candy). The Hello Kitty store had a lot of amazing Gudetama merchandise, including a Gudetama popcorn vending machine (!!!). We also popped into the huge Pokemon Center Tokyo DX in Ginza before heading back to the hotel to dive into a box of juicy gourmet strawberries.

Trip to Okinawa World
Grandma K visited her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren in Okinawa, Japan, in October 2013. One of the highlights of the trip was visiting Okinawa World to learn about traditional artisans, foods, and culture. The most memorable experiences were probably walking about 1/2 mile underground in a cave and visiting the Habu (snake) Museum.
