Lincoln County Museum, North Platte, Nebraska
Come along and discover the Lincoln County Historical Museum in North Platte with curator, James Griffin. A museum highlight is a showcase of the historic North Platte train station Canteen that served coffee and treats to more than six million transiting servicemen throughout WWII. Other highlights include historic homestead cabins, barns, a Pony Express Station and more. Excerpted from NPR.ORG Podcast, Journeys of Discovery with Tom Wilmer.
Buffalo Bill in North Platte Nebraska
Buffalo Bill called North Platte home for more than 40 years. His Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders was started here in our own Cody Park as the Old Glory Blowout in 1882, which also gave birth to the modern spectator sport of Rodeo. Today the headquarters of his huge ranching empire is preserved as a state historical park by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. His mansion and barn have been wonderfully restored and are filled with Cody and Wild West show memorabilia. You can also tour a log cabin that served as a line shack on the far north reaches of the ranch along the Dismal River.

High Plains Summer Science Camps - North Platte NRD - KNEB News Extra!
Dave Wolf from the North Platte Natural Resources District joins Scott Miller on KNEB's News Extra program.
Dave is on to talk about the upcoming High Plains Summer Science Camp.
Children and Nature in our Parks are sponsoring the 2019 High Plains Science Camp, H2OH!
The theme of this year’s camp will be water and gives students an opportunity to get out and experience nature closer to home.
Campers will learn about the global and local water systems, and how the water has shaped our landscape and economy, and how both the wildlife and the people that have adapted to live in our region. Activities will include a tour of an irrigation diversion, Lake Minatare, Nine Mile Creek, other water-related activities, and an overnight stay at Wildcat Hills Nature Center.
The camp will be held June 10th – 14th and is for students ages 9 to 12. The registration fee is $175. The deadline for registration is May 24th, and scholarships are available for those who apply.
The camp is also looking for mentors aged 16 and over and interested in outdoors and education. Must possess leadership skills. Experience working with kids preferable. Mentors will receive a $400 stipend for the week, and a bonus is available with a favorable review.
For more information and a copy of the registration form go to npnrd.org or contact Amanda Filipi at amanda.filipi@nebraska.gov.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. Nebraska, which was admitted to the union as the 37th state on March 1, 1867, two years after the end of the American Civil War, contains some of the nation’s best ranchland and farmland. Prior to its statehood, the Nebraska Territory had been sparsely settled but saw growth during the California Gold Rush in 1848, with a larger wave of settlers arriving as homesteaders in the 1860s.
2. The city that would become Nebraska’s capital was originally named Lancaster, after the town in Pennsylvania. It was renamed to honor Abraham Lincoln after his assassination, but there was also an ulterior motive. There was talk of moving the state capital from Omaha to Lancaster in 1867, and because much of the state had supported the Confederacy during the Civil War, a Nebraska legislator who wanted to keep the capital in Omaha decided to “honor” Lincoln by renaming Lancaster. He was also counting on Confederate sympathizers to vote against moving the state capital to a town named after the man who ended slavery. His plan failed.
3. While it doesn’t have an official state food, Nebraska does have an official state soft drink: Kool-Aid. Originally called “Fruit Smack,” Kool-Aid was invented by a man named Edwin Perkins who ran a small mail-order business out of Hastings, Nebraska. Though the Fruit Smack concentrate syrup was one of his most popular products, the glass bottles often broke in transit. Perkins invented a powder concentrate in 1927 to solve the problem, and Kool-Aid was born.
4. Bailey Yard in North Platte is the world’s largest train yard, situated on 2,850 acres of land spanning eight miles. It manages as many as 10,000 rail cars each day and can repair up to 20 cars per hour in its immense locomotive repair shop.
5. Speaking of Oregon Trail landmarks, one of them seems to be dwindling due to erosion. Chimney Rock, a prominent rock formation near Bayard, Nebraska, was another important marker for the covered wagon set. It’s a good thing that the geologic wonder has been preserved on the state quarter, because it’s not quite as impressive as it once was, having lost more than 30 feet in the past 150 years.
6. The Ogallala Aquifer, which lies beneath 174,000 square miles of eight states extending from South Dakota down to western Texas, provides almost all of the water for residential, industrial and agricultural use in the High Plains region. Two-thirds of the Ogallala’s total supply comes from Nebraska.
7. The state is home to Archie, the biggest mammoth on display anywhere. This 14-foot fossil was found in 1922 by a rancher in Lincoln County. He turned Archie over to the University of Nebraska State Museum where he still lives today. The creature's name, by the way, comes from his scientific classification, Archidiskodon imperator maibeni.

Nebraska 2016 Gothenburg I 80 exit 211
Travels around Gothenburg, we checked out the Pony Express station, downtown and the Sod House museum. The pony express station was still open when we got there and the people working were very nice and answered any questions we had there was a gift shop and we bought the local 4-H cook book. The Sod House museum was closed when we arrived, might have been interesting though, so if you find yourself in the area check it out.

Welcome to Scouts Rest Ranch
It’s Buffalo Bill’s Ranch. Well, it was his.
He lost it on account of dying.
We gotta say though, he looks pretty good for a dead guy; must have been all that clean living he was known for. If you want to see how one of America’s most interesting men lived, it’s high time you made your way to Scout’s Rest Ranch.
If you’re interested in the old west, Bill’s ranch is preserved in all of it’s glory.
It’s Bill’s ranch, of course he gave it his coveted Buffalo of Approval.

Baltimore & Ohio Railroad's Crumbling Washington Shops
See the full video here:
In 1885 the City of Washington, Indiana, donated sixty acres of land and $75,000 in cash to the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad. In return for this, the railroad built their railroad shops in Washington to serve the maintenance needs of the railroad. The shops were completed in 1889. Eventually, the Washington Shops employed 1,000 men. The railroad facility included a roundhouse, which contained thirty-four stalls, a machine shop, erecting shops, supply shops, a boiler shop, a planning mill, a passenger car shop, a paint facility, a steel-car shop, and freight car shop. The shop facilities rebuilt locomotives, passenger cars, and freight cars for nearly seven decades, faithfully serving the needs of the B&O.
In the late 1970s, Chessie System was building Queensgate Yard in Cincinnati and eliminating eight other yards in the Queen City area. The yard at Washington was upgraded with welded rail and became the primary switching yard for the St. Louis Gateway until Queensgate opened in 1980. The yard ceased to function as a classification yard shortly thereafter and the shops permanently closed. By 1999, when the Conrail takeover was finalized, regular freight service started to decline rapidly through Washington.
Regular freight Train service past the depot on the Indiana Sub ceased between 2003-2004. The Relay at shops ceased to be an assigned crew point by 2014 and was moved to Vincennes, as the truncation of the Illinois Sub occurred in August of 2015.
Eagle Railcar Services now occupies the remainder of the shop facilities at Washington. The yard is strategically located between Cincinnati and St. Louis, only 18 miles from Vincennes, Indiana. The shop is served by CSX and has approximately thirteen miles of track and approximately 200,000 square feet of buildings on the property. Eagle Railcar also offers storage services.
In 2015, we visited Washington on a separate occasion and captured aerial footage of the remaining B&O shop complex buildings. Damaged from a roof collapse, these buildings were literally crumbling away with the passage of time.
