Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin - UNESCO World Heritage Site
This UNESCO world heritage site is a collection of 758 rock art locations across eastern Spain. It includes many types of art, such as cave paintings, engravings, petroglyphs and discovered objects. These cover an enormous span of history, from around 8000 BC to 3500 BC, and show human societies gradually transitioning from hunter-gatherer nomads, into settled agricultural tribes. For our site visit, we headed to Monte Arabi, on the coast near Alicante.

Painting the Neolithic: coastal rock art from the Balkans to the Iberian Peninsula
The Iberian Peninsula is well known in rock art research for the Schematic rock art tradition, which consists in paintings, mainly in red colour, of basic figures and symbols of anthropomorphs, animals, geometric motifs in rock shelters. It is widely believed that this artistic tradition originated towards the middle of the 6th millennium BC when the first economic and technological evidence of the Neolithic is documented in the Mediterranean area of the Iberian Peninsula. Intriguingly, schematic rock art sites are well documented also in many coastal regions of the Central Mediterranean, from the wide embayment of the Gulf of Lyon in France to the southern part of the Italian Peninsula, from then biggest islands (Corse, Sicily) to the immediate hinterland of the Balkan Adriatic coast. In this paper, we consider whether similarities in coastal rock art are supported by a model of maritime spread of the Neolithic, as seen from other classes of material evidence. On current knowledge, the Neolithic spread was not continuous but featured both temporal and spatial gaps (“jump dispersal” or “leap frogging”), which would fit with the known distribution of schematic paintings en-route from east to west. Evidence of long distance interaction and transfer of shared symbolic identities are discussed in the context of maritime connections, painting a fuller picture of the Neolithic.

About This Course:
Spain has played a unique and pivotal role in Western civilization. It has historically stood at a critical crossroad—a crossroad of geography, of cultures, of religions, of ideas, of trade, and more. Spain’s strategic location, through the centuries, has made it a magnet for multiple different peoples, and it has participated in and witnessed numerous major shifts, trends, and historical moments.
Across 5000 years, from its prehistory and ancient Roman rule to the glory of Moorish al-Andalus, and from its empire building to its religious passions and kingly dynasties, Spain’s history has been extraordinarily dramatic, colorful, poignant, inspiring, and heartrending.
And yet, Spain’s remarkable role has not always been detailed in standard history curricula, at times overshadowed by the high profile of other European powers. But to understand the unfolding of Spain’s epic history is to come to terms with one of the West’s great civilizations, and to grasp its enduring presence and influence on the world stage. Consider these singular features of Spanish history:
The Renaissance began in Spain 15 years before the rest of Europe;
Spain was both the instigator and the catalyst for the opening of the New World, spanning North, Central, and South America—leaving Spanish as the world’s second most widely spoken language, following only Chinese;
Spain was a primary player in the vast commercial revolution that changed the world in the 17th century;
The collapse of Spain’s great empire both prefigured and sheds light upon the later disintegration of other European empires;
Spain’s 20th century history reveals much about the rise and fall of fascism in Europe.
In The History of Spain: Land on a Crossroad, Professor Emerita Joyce E. Salisbury of the University of Wisconsin unfurls a broad and fascinating panorama of Spanish history, spanning the centuries from the first Neolithic settlement of the peninsula to Spain’s 20th century Civil War.
Linking one extraordinary era with the next, the course begins with how early Spain drew a spectrum of peoples from ancient Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East, who formed vibrant communities on the peninsula. From there, you’ll witness the subjugation of the peninsula by both Rome and Gothic peoples, leading to the breathtaking drama of Islamic Spain and the Reconquista, Catholic Spain and the Inquisition, and the conquest of the New World. In the final lectures, you’ll travel into the royal dynasties and dazzling artistic heritage of the Habsburg and Bourbon kings, and you’ll track Spain’s storied emergence into the modern world.
These 24 accessible and highly enjoyable lectures offer you a penetrating overview of the development of Spanish civilization. Designed for a wide audience, the course presents a comprehensive picture of Spanish life and culture, encompassing history, architecture and art, religion, science, and the humanities, as well as offering many pointers for travel in Spain, highlighting the country’s outstanding historical and cultural sights, and why they’re important.

Prehistoric Iberian Twins Discovered

Prehistoric Cave Etchings Found In Spain Feature Surprising Animal
More than 50 cave etchings thought to be around 14,500 years old have been found in the northern Spanish town of Lekeitio. Bizkaia regional official Unai Rementeria announced the discovery in a press conference Thursday. He said the etchings were a treasure of mankind, and of exceptional technical quality and visibility, adding yhat experts have praised the etchings as the most spectacular in the Iberian peninsula. The region of Bizkaia neighbors the region of Cantabria, home to the famous Altamira cave paintings, Spain's most prized prehistoric cave art site - also known as the Sistine Chapel of Paleolithic Art. Among the figures carved into the stone surface are horses, bison, goats and, for the first time, at least two lions.

Archaeology of Iberia: State of the Field
The Iberian Peninsula is rich in archaeological remains of global importance from Neanderthal tools to Phoenician ports and from Roman arches to mass graves from the Spanish Civil War. In spite of this, the archaeology of Iberia is little studied outside of the peninsula itself. Political and linguistic factors have resulted in relatively isolated academic and archaeological communities in Spain and Portugal in stark contrast to other Mediterranean nations, such as Italy and Greece, with long histories of international collaboration. In recent decades, however, the involvement of international scholars in cooperative projects in Iberia has increased notably. Nonetheless, there remain some stubborn divisions amongst Iberian archaeologists that hinder progress — for example, about the most appropriate types of archaeological method and theory, or between differing traditions in prehistoric and Classical archaeology. The time is ripe for conversation and debate about such issues. From February 27 through March 1, the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World will host a conference and seminar series called Archaeology of Iberia: State of the Field. The event will provide a forum for international scholars across disciplines, temporal foci, and theoretical schools to discuss ongoing obstacles and future directions in the archaeology of this region.

My Language Acquisition theory blog:
Rather than boring grammar lessons, we provide free interesting listening experiences for learners of Spanish. We believe that the best way to learn Spanish is to have authentic experiences with it. By listening to our stories, culture explanations and games, you will get used to real Spanish as it's used in context, and eventually develop a native-like intuition for the grammar and the vocabulary, together with a clear pronunciation.
The videos try to use basic Spanish as much as possible and be easy enough for a complete beginner in the language to get the gist of the story and start picking up vocabulary. That way you'll get that i+1 necessary to make fast progress in the language.
Things I use to record my videos that I recommend:

- USB microphone:
- Whiteboard marker (the BEST I found after trying many kinds, not even other models by BIC were as good as this one):
Why Does Spain Have So Much Creativity? (Dali, Picasso, Gaudi, and Okuda)
What is it about Spain that created artists like Salvador Dali, Picasso, or a building like Sagrada Familia that combines color, nature, and epic imagination? There is definitely something happening in Spain, and I'm on a mission to find out.
I travel through the mountains of Spain to see where the architect Antoni Gaudi was inspired to design his famous basilica Sagrada Familia, and explores how new 3D printing technologies are being used to complete its construction. I then head to Salvador Dali’s former home and studio to understand how the culture of Catalonia influenced modern art.
I finish by heading to Madrid to see how modern artists like Okuda are leading the future of Spanish art. His bold, colorful, and powerful paintings, graffiti murals, and sculptures are amazing people around the world!
