Xinyi Public Assembly Hall (Taipei, Taiwan)
The Xinyi Public Assembly Hall is located at a corner in Taipei’s high-end Xinyi District and consists of a few low-rise houses sitting closely together. These somewhat crowded buildings chronicled the tears and joy of veterans who migrated to Taiwan in the early days. This is the former site of Taipei City’s Military Dependents’ Village, called the “Sisinan Village”.
With the increasingly fast economic growth and the rising living standard, these old houses no longer serve the needs of the residents. The City Government initially planned to rebuild them in 1999. However, through persuasion from the cultural circles, the City Government designated this premise as the Cultural Hall and Cultural Park of Xinyi District, and started operation in 2003.
The Hall consists of four symmetrical buildings. The houses that sat tightly next to each other have been converted into an open space for events and exhibitions. The premise now consists of an exhibition hall, Military Dependents’ Village Exhibition Hall, performance hall and community hall. The exterior still retains the unique low-rise and the simple, rustic style of the Military Dependents’ Village.
On weekends, the square is occupied by a creative market, agricultural market and live band. As a performance and community hall.

We start with breakfast at a local eatery which serves freshly baked flatbread. You can watch the dough being rolled out which is filled with spring onions and topped with sesame seeds before it's slapped on the inside of an oil drum oven. We order a flatbread with an omelette sandwiched inside and wash it down with a cold doujiang or soy milk. Fresh, doughy and completely more-ish.
We head to the suburb of Daqiatou next and slurp down a plate of cold sesame noodles. Wheat noodles are topped with a thick sesame sauce, shredded cucumber, pickled cabbage and chilli. It’s the perfect thing to be eating on a hot day. It’s full of varying textures and flavours.
Onwards to our next stop for a bowl of rice topped with pork knuckle which has been slowly braised in soy. Served with egg, pickled mustard greens and some blanched choy sum- this is one amazing bowl of food. The pork is tender as anything and the richness of the meat is balanced by the pickled and fresh vegetables.
We then head to a famous stall which sells cong you bing- spring onion pancakes. A wheat flour dough, dotted with chopped spring onions is flattened and then cooked on a hot plate. Hot, flaky and fragrant- this is one savoury pancake worth eating. It’s very much like a roti or a paratha which you’d find in Malaysia and Singapore (sans spring onion).
Our final stop is to a local eatery which specialises in bawan- Taiwanese meatballs. A loose mixture of pork mince is covered in a sweet potato and rice flour mixture before being steamed. The meatball skin is gloopy and soft whilst the meatball is full of flavour. A couple of squirts of chilli sauce are the perfect accompaniment.
Where and what we ate:
Flatbreads at 和記豆漿店 No. 2之2號, Lane 463, Section 3, Heping East Road, Xinyi District, Taipei . Open 7:00am to 11:30am Closed Wednesday and Thursday.

We start with one of our favourite noodles soups in the world TAIWANESE BEEF NOODLE SOUP at Liu Shandong which received Bib Gourmand recognition from Michelin this year. The eatery is really popular with the locals and we can see why! The noodles are bouncy and thick and the beef is melt in your mouth. The beef broth is clean tasting and has a rich beef flavour. An array of condiments are on the tables in which to adjust your noodle soup to your own taste. We add fermented black beans, pickled mustard greens and some chilli oil to ramp up the flavours and spice. Highly recommended!
We move on to our next snacks- GUA BAO and BUBBLE MILK TEA. Both stalls are extremely popular and are within a couple of metres of each other. The gua bao is a steamed pork belly bun- at Lan Jia it is made up of half fatty pork and half lean pork. Stuffed into a fluffy steamed bun together with crushed peanuts, sugar and pickled mustard greens, this is one of the best gua bao we’ve ever eaten. Chen San Ding’s bubble milk tea is the best thing to wash down the gua bao. Contrary to its name, this stall’s version doesn’t contain tea but is made up of fresh milk and warm tapioca boba that are cooked in thick, sweet brown sugar syrup. It’s sweet, fun to eat/drink and very rich. Both stalls are well worth a visit!
Our next snack is one of our favourite to eat when in Taiwan- stinky tofu! It gets a bad reputation what with its stink but its smell is far worse than its taste! We eat deep fried stinky tofu stuffed with chilli and soy sauce with pickled cabbage on the side. It’s an amazing snack and the stinky tofu has a beautiful flavour.
We finish with one of Taiwan’s most beloved dishes- lu rou fan. Available at almost every eatery, braised pork on rice is addictive! Jin Feng is a lu rou fan powerhouse- white rice topped with a ladle of braised pork bits and fatty soy sauce. This is one delicious bowl you have got to eat when in Taipei!
Where and what we ate:
Beef noodle soup at Liu Shandong, No. 2, Lane 14, Section 1, Kaifeng St, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100. Open 8:00am to 8:00pm. Closed Sunday.
Gua bao at Lan Jia Traditional Taiwanese Snack, No. 3, Alley 8, Lane 316, Section 3, Luosifu Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100. Open 11:00am to midnight. Closed Monday.
Bubble milk tea at Chen San Ding, No. 2, Alley 8, Lane 316, Section 3, Luosifu Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100. Open 11:00am to 9:30pm. Closed Monday.
Stinky tofu at 110, Taiwan, Taipei City, Xinyi District, 忠孝東路五段165巷5號. Open 8:00am to 8:30pm. Closed Sunday.
Lu rou fan at Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice, No. 10, Section 1, Roosevelt Rd, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100. Open 8:00am to 1:00am.

Taipei 101 - A Simple Travel Review
Taipei 101 is an engineering marvel and the first building of its kind in the world. Spanning 101 stories above the ground at 508 metres, the building was designed as a symbol of technology's evolution fused with Asian tradition. The building features many pan-Chinese and Asian elements mixed with a postmodern style, and is designed to withstand typhoons and earthquakes common in Taiwan.
Besides the tower, the base of the building houses a multi-level shopping mall, food court, various restaurants and stores (including Din Tai Fung 鼎泰豐), and an international grocery store.
The double-deck elevators installed in Taipei 101 set a record in 2004 by traveling 60.6 km/h, lifting visitors to the observation deck at the top in only 37 seconds.
Take a trip to the top of 101 by purchasing a ticket inside the mall for NT$500, granting access to the observation deck and museum where visitors can learn about this technical and architectural wonder, as well as get a first-hand look at the tuned mass damper located at the core of the tower that keeps the building from swaying. It's a fascinating piece of technology, and visitors are allowed to view up close.
How to Get there:
By MRT:
Take the Red Line 2 (Xiangshan train) to Taipei 101 station (台北101). Alternatively, take the Blue Line 5 to Taipei City Hall Station (市政府), located beneath HanKyu Department Store. Walk south to enter the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi (新光三越) complex (known as the Xinyi Shopping District) towards 101. Being as tall as it is, you will definitely see it along the skyline.
