In this episode of My Life in China, we're back with Richard Ramsundar, an AYC Educational Ambassador from New York City living and working in Li County, Changde, China.
Kicking off April, Richard took a trip to Suzhou, AKA the Venice of the East. It's a beautiful, famous city close to Shanghai. The city is famous for it's lush, historic gardens, architecture and canals winding through the city. He spent his time with friends exploring the narrow alleyways, garden hopping, hanging out in the bar district and relaxing.
He then jumped on an overnight train to Changsha to meet up with some friends. His Chinese has improved a lot and he can now successfully small talk and bargain, making short trips even more engaging.
He visited another foreign teacher's school back in Lixian and met a lot of her co-workers and students. He saw a big talent show the school arranged at a fancy hotel and met some Ukrainian performers. The expat communities in smaller Chinese cities are relatively small so it's always nice for foreigners to meet and share experiences.
Over the Chinese labor day holiday, Richard and friends took a long bike ride, discovered a new temple and chatted with some monks. They then came across a Baijiu brewery (Chinese grain alcohol) and got a tour from the friendly owners. They ended the holiday with a nice picnic and a night of KTV (karaoke.)

Mao Zedong
Mao Zedong (1893-1976) was one of the historic figures of the twentieth century. A founder of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party), he played a major role in the establishment of the Red Army and the development of a defensible base area in Jiangxi province during the late 1920s and early 1930s. He consolidated his rule over the Party in the years after the Long March and directed overall strategy during the Sino-Japanese War and the civil war. He formally assumed the post of Party Chairman in 1945. His reliance on the peasantry (a major departure from prevailing Soviet doctrine) and dependence on guerrilla warfare in the revolution were essential to the Communist triumph in China.
Baotou Paotow
Ancient times
The area now known as Baotou was inhabited since ancient times by nomads, some of whose descendants would later be categorized as Mongols. Near the end of the Han Dynasty, Lü Bu, a particularly noteworthy warrior, was born in today's Jiuyuan District of Baotou.
Compared to the capital of Inner Mongolia, Hohhot, Baotou's construction as a city came relatively late, being incorporated as a town in 1809. The city's site was chosen because it was in an arable region of the Yellow River's Great Bend.
Nanhai Wetland is a national 4A-level scenic area in the southern suburbs of Donghe district, Baotou, connecting with the Yellow River to the south. It was an official waterway in ancient China, where Wang Zhaojun, famous for her beauty, went through Nanhai when she volunteered to marry a ruler of a Hun tribe in exchange for friendly relations with the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220).
There are three annual events for the wetland: the Yellow River carp festival, the Yellow River wetland festival and the ice and snow festival in Baotou.
Tourists can visit the Bibo pavilion or Nanhai fishing village, and feast on the fish banquet there. The picturesque scenery is attractive in every season, and nicknamed “the West Lake beyond the Great Wall”.
There are many thrilling activities, including parasailing, surfing, and diving. Tourists can also spend their leisure time in picnics, swimming, fishing and taking photos.

Beijing Cultural Creative Industry Visitor Gallery
Details:
Visiting the Beijing Cultural Creative Centre Visitor Gallery is like embarking on a cultural tour of the city, a place where one can have a memorable and personal encounter with the metropolis. Pico designed and fabricated the Centre’s entire visitor gallery, and was also responsible for developing the gallery’s storyline, spatial environment, interactive experiences and content.
As this was the first gallery of its kind to specifically promote China’s cultural creative industry, the team focused on making the integration of traditional art forms with digitally-created experiences the design cornerstone for the 6,000 sq. m. project. They created a fascinating journey through old and new Beijing, mingling historic sites through storytelling, content development and leading technology; while also providing a multi-functional space in a modern, cutting-edge environment.
Liberal use of open space allowed the team to plan for different traffic flow scenarios, while zone colours, symbols and applications were used to make navigation easier. Special interactive zones with multimedia applications also give visitors hands-on experiences with learning cultural and creative content.
Just imagine cycling through the alleyways of Hutongs near the Forbidden City, roaming through courtyards, stopping to watch a game of chess, enjoying a well-attended garden party and soaking in the warmth of the close-knit Hutong communities of days gone by. Your journey continues to the National Centre for the Performing Arts where you witness a captivating opera, then on to a museum where fascinating artifacts come alive, followed by a stroll through the most scenic parts of Beijing and a toboggan ride down the Great Wall. This amazing experience was part of the combination of digital art and applications which Pico designed and delivered for the Beijing Cultural Creative Industry Visitor Gallery.
“The Visitor Gallery of the Beijing Cultural Creative Industry incorporates state-of-the-art technology with varied spatial situations, innovative applications and coherent visuals to produce an immersive experience and leaves the visitor in awe.” - Mr. Peter Benz, Professor of Spatial Design, Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University
