Connecticut
Connecticut (/kəˈnɛtɨkət/, kuh-NET-i-kət) is the southernmost state in the northeastern region of the United States known as New England. It is bordered by Rhode Island to the east, Massachusetts to the north, New York to the west, and Long Island Sound to the south. Its capital city is Hartford. The state is named after the Connecticut River, a major U.S. river that approximately bisects the state. The word is derived from various anglicized spellings of an Algonquian word for long tidal river.
Connecticut is the third smallest state by area, the 29th most populous, and the fourth most densely populated of the 50 United States. Called the Constitution State, Nutmeg State, and The Land of Steady Habits, it was influential in the development of the federal government of the United States. Much of southern and western Connecticut (along with the majority of the state's population) is part of the New York metropolitan area: three of Connecticut's eight counties are statistically included in the New York City combined statistical area, which is widely referred to as the Tri-State area. Connecticut's center of population is in Cheshire, New Haven County, which is also located within the Tri-State area.

The first major settlements were established in the 1630s by the English. Thomas Hooker led a band of followers overland from the Massachusetts Bay Colony and founded the Connecticut Colony; other settlers from Massachusetts founded the Saybrook Colony and the New Haven Colony. The Connecticut and New Haven colonies established documents of Fundamental Orders, considered the first constitutions in North America. In 1662, the three colonies were merged under a royal charter, making Connecticut a crown colony. This was one of the Thirteen Colonies that rejected British rule in the American Revolution.

It’s always interesting to see and hear a band for the first time – and then spin backwards to find out how the musicians got together to begin with. Of course, if it’s a bunch of 17-year-olds in Mom and Dad’s basement, the history might not be particularly intriguing.
But, while the four members of the melodic alt-rock band Ravens in the Woods have a clearly happy chemistry together, it’s probably also fair to suggest that “no one saw this coming.” Singer-songwriter-bassist Lauren Agnelli is a Grammy-nominated musician with roots in the NYC ’80s folk and punk scenes. She later moved to Chester and formed the roots band Amalgamated Muck. The Muck’s percussionist is Matthew Male, another veteran of the fertile Chester acoustic music scene.
If Agnelli was going to form a new group, having Male on hand seems reasonable, right? But Ravens in the Woods’ other songwriter, a rock guitarist/singer named Rempe Ferreira Kooij, is a native of the Netherlands who moved to Old Saybrook 18 months ago. Volunteering as a stage hand at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, Kooij met Agnelli at the venue and they struck up a friendship. Given their interests, it wasn’t long before the idea of a musical collaboration came up – and Male signed up.
Dubbed Ravens in the Woods, the new act immediately started writing, which has resulted in a deal with the local Good Sponge Records label. Their “Keep Waving On” is a cut on the new Good Sponge sampler. The final component is perhaps the most unexpected. Matt Gouette, a huge part of the New London music scene and multi-Whalie Award-winning songwriter, has taken the drum chair for the Ravens. The band is in the process of recording a full-length album and possibly incorporating Gouette’s material into the compositional mix. In the meantime, they’ve already proven a fun live act with plenty of hooky songs – many of which can be heard on this week’s “Live Lunch Break” performance.
Next week, the New London band Terrible Roars will be our “Lunch Break” guests. The show kicks off at noon in The Telegraph Records Shop and is broadcast live at theday.com.
