Las Cruces Honors Veterans
Bands played and hundreds gathered to honor and support veterans throughout Southern New Mexico. Veterans said Veteran’s Day is a special day to recognize those who should be honored all year.
“As far as the Vietnam Veteran’s,” Robert De Herrera said. “We didn’t have no parades, or nobody said thank you or anything like that. We didn’t have any benefits, and everything has changed. And I’m so proud of these people that showed up today.”
“What I like about it is,” Roy Maldonado. “That history’s not repeating itself. When Vietnam Veteran’s and Korea came back, we forgot about those and all that. We have the Veteran’s now from Iraq and Afghanistan, we’re recognized. We have parades, we have all these events, and so this is a good time to bring all the organizations from different times of service. Bring them together and show the United States still supports them and stands behind them.”
“I think it’s just to show people that we’re appreciated,” Kirby Prickett said. “Sometimes we’re not shown that. It’s not a major thing with me, but I think it gives the citizens a chance to get out and welcome their veterans, and show their support.”
While thanking Veteran’s for their service, many says it’s also a time to remember the problems Veterans continue to face.
“The biggest problem is young guys coming back from war,” Gregory Long said. “Don’t want to have anything to do with organization or regimented things, and they don’t reach out for help soon enough.”
“I think we’re going forward and helping the veterans real good and all this,” Roy Maldonado said. “It’s just a communication problem we’re still having, the organization structure, and how the veteran’s get their benefits, so I think we are moving forward, and I think veteran’s are getting their benefits.”
After the parade others stopped by Veteran’s Memorial Park for a quiet moment to remember those who served.
Like Melissa Guillen, who came out with her father, a World War II Veteran.
“We just remember all the ones who fought for the war,” Guillen said. “Not only that, but we do honor my daddy and of course he fought for WWII and he is 92 years old, so we like to bring him out for lunch, and bring him to the memorial, and just spend the day.”

they need it to make up for a summer of mixed results in the state's tourism industry. stuart dyson has a look back at summer - and ahead to fall. what's clear is that new mexico is still suffering from the great recession - and that includes tourism - how important is it to new mexico's economy - we're talking five and a half billion dollars in direct spending last year. last year's balloon fiesta brought in about 90 million dollars in direct spending - an economic impact study says - the average visitor from outside the metro area spending 194 dollars a day here. all summer long the tourist trade was brisk in albuquerque's old town - visitors stopping in for akinds of reasons. Everything - especially the jewelry - Mexican food is excellent - ha ha - real tacos instead of Taco Bell - real tacos - real Mexican food. Q Wll you be coming back? A: Oh yeah - we're coming back - yeah. This is just heaven from what I've always dreamed about - cuase I'm from a different cultural background - so to come here and see all this - it's just something I can only describe as a dream. We were golfing - so we were doing a little golf vay-cay and I just said well I've never been to Albuquerque so show me what the things are - she said okay let's go to Old Town so it's like OK we'll start here. BUT THERE ARE some downers this summer. sunport destination arrivals were down 3 and a half percent in july compared to last summer. hotel and motel receipts down 10 percent. national parks and monuments - down. state parks though - up! leisure and hospitality employment - up three percent. one real bright spot - visits to the state's online vacation guide were up a whopping 59% this summer - so even if they didn't visit this year - at least they're thinking about us - in old town stuart dyson k-o-b eyewitness news 4. kob eyewitness news 4 has you covered for balloon fiesta. we'll have live coverage of all the mass ascensions... starting next saturday morning. you may have noticed a lot of

The Nightmare World of Gang Stalking
More than 10,000 people worldwide claim they're the victims of a vast organized surveillance effort designed to ruin their lives, a phenomenon known as gang stalking. Mental health experts see gang stalking as a symptom of paranoia, but the self-identified victims who insist what they're experiencing is real have come together online and in support groups to share their stories.
VICE met up with a handful of Americans who claim their lives have been derailed by gang stalking to understand what serious consequences the phenomenon presents. Then we hear from Dr. Josh Bazell, one of many physicians who believes the victims of gang stalking are experiencing dangerous delusions that could be treated by mental health professionals.

The Occupation of Alcatraz that Sparked an American Revolution
Many know Alcatraz as a notorious federal prison, but it is also the site of a 19-month occupation led by a group of Native Americans. In 1969, more than 80 Native Americans sailed to Alcatraz by boat. Their mission was to reclaim the island from the federal government. Alcatraz became a symbol of the centuries of injustice toward Native Americans by the U.S. government. Nearly five decades later, the fight to protect tribal land continues today at Standing Rock as the federal government yet again ignores the rights of Native people.

The Standing Rock Sioux Claim ‘Victory and Vindication’ in Court
“James Boasberg, who sits on D.C. district court, said that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers failed to perform an adequate study of the pipeline’s environmental consequences when it first approved its construction. In a 91-page decision, the judge cited the Corps’ study of “the impacts of an oil spill on fishing rights, hunting rights, or environmental justice” as particularly deficient, and he ordered it to prepare a new report on its risks.”
The History of Alcatraz
“In 1969, a group of Native Americans led by Mohawk activist Richard Oakes (1942-72) arrived on Alcatraz Island and claimed the land on behalf of ‘Indians of All Tribes.’ The activists hoped to establish a university and a museum on the island.”
We Hold The Rock
“Prior to the coming of the Spanish and Portuguese explorers, over 10,000 indigenous people, later to be called the Ohlone (a Miwok Indian word meaning western people), lived in the coastal area between Point Sur and the San Francisco Bay.”
