The Hong Kong tailor that's become a sartorial institution | Remarkable Living
Established in 1953 and named after its founder, Ascot Chang is one of Hong Kong’s most famous shirt and suit makers. Besides its exceptional workmanship and quality, the business has also come to be known for a speciality – its Shanghai style that fuses Russian, British, Japanese and Chinese tailoring techniques.
“My grandfather originally was from Shanghai. When he got to Hong Kong, he basically was living in a relative’s balcony area and started to go door-to-door measuring people for shirts. Back then, there were a lot of Shanghainese businessmen, who were accustomed to getting bespoke shirts made to certain standards that they wouldn’t find in Hong Kong,” said Justin Chang, who represents the third generation of the family-run business as deputy managing director. In Hong Kong, the reputed home of the 24-hour suit, a visit to Sam's is a must, for VIP's and vacationers alike. Hong Kong's legendary Sam's Tailor is famous world-wide for its unquestioned reputation for quality and discretion - and a clientele seemingly culled from the pages of the International Who's Who.
Few of Hong Kong's annual nine million tourists and business visitors have not heard of Sam's. Many make a beeline for its Burlington Arcade premises on Kowloon's Nathan Road (the Golden Mile of tat-to-terrific bargains). It's almost as obligatory as a visit one to The Peak or Aberdeen's Jumbo floating restaurant. Sam's is as much an institution in Hong Kong as Macy's in New York or Harrods in London. Its location in one of the smaller territories on earth is no bar to the patronage of kings, queens, presidents, prime ministers and widely assorted glitterati.

CHINA: CHINESE TAILORING MAKING A COMEBACK
Mandarin/Nat
With Mao suits out and western clothing in, China's wealthy are starting to buy their suits tailor-made.
Tailoring in China is making a comeback not only in Shanghai, famous for its haberdashery, but also in the province of Guangdong, 80 km north of Hong Kong.
With rising salaries and foreign businesses and investors popping up almost daily, Guangzhou's young professionals are dressing smarter.
Despite prices ranging from 130 U-S dollars (d) to two thousand dollars (d), many can afford to get a tailor-made suit.
At One and One tailors, the latest styles are being supplied using the latest technology.
One and One also carries imported suits from popular European companies.
Just 15 years ago, this kind of consumerism was virtually non-existent in communist China where everyone tried to be equal.
SOUNDBITE:
Before the reforms, most clothes were plain coloured, and the style was mostly that of Mao's suit. But now people's standard of living is higher and they are earning better salaries, which is why we have more customers.
SUPERCAPTION: Mr. Wang Jian Wei, tailor
One and One can supply more custom-made clothing due to a computerized system of pattern-making described by the owners as the first of its kind in China.
The computerized system - invented by a Chinese designer - is saving the shop time, manpower and money.
SOUNDBITE:
From past experience, a tailor spent 40 minutes cutting out the patterns, but now it only takes five minutes to do it. That's 40 compared to five. We are getting eight times more work done.
SUPERCAPTION: Mr. Lu Shue Yung, computer manager
The average monthly salary in Guangzhou is approximately three to four hundred dollars (d) a month.
However, the customers who frequent One and One are not average wage-earners.
They are eager to dress to impress.
SOUNDBITE:
The price here is a little expensive compared to other stores, but I like to have my suits tailor-made because they fit me better.
SUPER CAPTION: Mr. Liu, customer
Women's fashions are also leaning toward Western trends, for both professional and casual styles.
Sometimes that means their needs must be met with the same custom attention as the men.
