Westport Weighs Affordable Senior Housing Complex
Watch more and discuss:
A proposal for affordable senior housing in Westport is one step closer to a reality, recently getting the green light from the Board of Selectman.
I know there's an image that Westport residents can afford to live any place they want. The reality is many are challenged by the cost as well as the physical nature of keeping up a house, said Selectman Jim Marpe.
Currently there's an overall shortage of affordable housing rentals in this area, and there is no facility that allows elders to age-in-place. That's causing many elders to leave a town they've helped to grow and support.
This proposal, located on a section of the Baron South property, could help alleviate that stress. It plans for 135 rental units: with 20 percent of those units set aside as affordable, another 20 percent for moderate incomes, and 40 percent below market price. For example, an elder earning an income up to $43,000 would qualify for one of the affordable units.
And, you might see the complex in the near future on this open land, bought by the town more than 14 years ago.It will be situated between Post Road East, Compo Road South and Imperial avenue. Not far from the Senior Center.
Selectman Marpe saying it might even address expansion needs of the Senior Center by offering amenities like a caf, pool and a gym.
The thing that is most exciting is that elders can stay, age-in-place, and take advantage of all the amenities Westport has, said Selectman Marpe.
The proposal now remains in the hands of the Planning and Zoning Commission, who will take up the amendment on Thursday at Town Hall.

Woodmont Farmer's Market in Milford, CT
A quick video shot for the Connecticut Post with a Flip HD camcorder. This is from the opening day of the Woodmont Farmers Market at Robert Treat Farm in Milford, CT on Wednesday July 01, 2009. The paper I work for is adding more multimedia content to the website:
It's a nice little camera for down-and-dirty type filming, but it's built in software is very limed to cuts only type editing as well as real crumby title ability. So, for now, the videos we produce will be shot with this camera and software. When time permits, I'll will be trying to edit the footage into something a little more complex. Stay tuned.....

An Inside Peek to Jane's Good Foods
Watch more and discuss:
The'yre recipes that shaped her up-bringing, but it wasn't until five years that they would shape her career. It all began when she would give her jarred goodies as gifts.
People would give the empty jar back and say I want more, she said.
Jane began selling her products at church fairs and later at some local markets, like the Westport Farmers Market.
When you get those people and they roll their eyes back and say that's like my grandmothers then you know you're on to something, she continued.
It's that kind of crowd approval that gave Jane the confidence to test out her products against some local competition. This year, she decided to enter her homemade blends into the Durham State Fair, the largest agricultural fair in Connecticut
So, I filled out an application and I entered my peaches and my dill pickle, she said.
Well, Jane walked away with second place.
I have pictures of me standing next to the canning bar and I'm holding my ribbon and it was really fun. I didn't even think I would place. You know how much I made - two dollars, she said.
Jane's recipes are around hundred years old, passed from her grandmother to her mother, begging the question: What would her family have to say on her success?
They'd be so proud - I could cry. It's so funny becasue my mother was a maverick, she was very spoke her mind but when she said something it hung on to me and she would say these are recipes you don't share with everyone - this is something you keep with the family, she said.
You can learn more about where to buy or try Jane's products by going to Janes good food dot com.
