Clarkdale, Arizona Centennial Celebration and Bell Ringing 2012.
Residents from Clarkdale joined with their counterparts throughout the State to celebrate Arizona's Centennial on February 14, 2012. Events culminated across the state with bell ringing ceremonies at precisely 2:14 p.m. (on 2-14-12) to celebrate Arizona's 100th year.
In Clarkdale, the Clarkdale-Jerome Elementary School hosted the official Centennial event, including a Centennial Fair, original songs and poetry written and performed by the students, bell choirs, speeches and appearances by local dignitaries, and, of course, a bell ringing ceremony (which lasted for 100 seconds) on the school lawn.
In addition to the ceremony at the school, Town employees and citizens gathered at the steps of the Town Library to ring bells, local business owners rang bells at the Clarkdale Visitor Center, the local Copper Museum's owner rang a homemade gong on Main Street, and the St. Thomas of the Valley Episcopal Church (which will celebrate its Centennial in 2013), rang its bells.
Clarkdale's ceremonies were special, in that Clarkdale is one of only two cities in Arizona that share a Centennial year with the State of Arizona. Founded by Montana Senator and copper magnate William Andrews Clark in 1912, Clarkdale will celebrate its centennial on July 4, 2012!

At approximately 9:30 AM on Saturday October 1, 2011 a Clarkdale resident contacted officers at the police station in reference to some possible dynamite he found while cleaning out an old shed on his parent's property in the Centerville neighborhood.
An officer responded to the scene and identified approximately 12-15 sticks of what appeared to be dynamite, located in a box outside of the shed. The officer immediately contacted the on duty supervisor and advised him of what he had found. A perimeter around the property was set up while the Arizona Department of Public Safety was notified. DPS then dispatched two Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Technicians to the scene.
The EOD Technicians confirmed that the items were in fact 17 sticks of dynamite. The technicians removed the dynamite from that location and transported it to safe area in the desert where the dynamite was destroyed.
There were no injuries or property damage as a result of this incident.

JEROME ARIZONA GHOST TOWN 1960s SILENT TRAVEL FILM 46774
This well-made silent film, apparently made by Ken Mershon, shows Jerome, Arizona and the surrounding area as it appeared in the late 1960s or early 1970s when it was still considered a ghost town.
Jerome is a town in the Black Hills of Yavapai County in the U.S. state of Arizona. Founded in the late 19th century on Cleopatra Hill overlooking the Verde Valley, it is more than 5,000 feet (1,500 m) above sea level. It is about 100 miles (160 km) north of Phoenix along State Route 89A between Sedona and Prescott. Supported in its heyday by rich copper mines, it was home to more than 10,000 people in the 1920s. As of the 2010 census, its population was 444.
The town owes its existence mainly to two ore bodies that formed about 1.75 billion years ago along a ring fault in the caldera of an undersea volcano. Tectonic plate movements, plate collisions, uplift, deposition, erosion, and other geologic processes eventually exposed the tip of one of the ore bodies and pushed the other close to the surface, both near Jerome. In the late 19th century, the United Verde Mine, developed by William A. Clark, extracted ore bearing copper, gold, silver, and other metals from the larger of the two. The United Verde Extension (UVX) Mine, owned by James Douglas, Jr., depended on the other huge deposit. In total, the copper deposits discovered in the vicinity of Jerome were among the richest ever found.
Jerome made news in 1917, when strikes involving the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) led to the expulsion at gunpoint of about 60 IWW members, who were loaded on a cattle car and shipped west. Production at the mines, always subject to fluctuations, boomed during World War I, fell thereafter, rose again, then fell again during and after the Great Depression. As the ore deposits ran out, the mines closed, and the population dwindled to fewer than 100 by the mid-1950s. Efforts to save the town from oblivion succeeded when residents turned to tourism and retail sales. Jerome became a National Historic Landmark in 1967. By the early 21st century, Jerome had art galleries, coffee houses, restaurants, a state park, and a local museum devoted to mining history.
