Mountain Biking White Horse + Cathedral Ledge | North Conway, New Hampshire
Cathedral Ledge and White Horse are not only epic for hiking, but riding too! Be sure to stick to the riding trails and avoid hikers. This is no Sunday casual ride, but an epic journey into the sky. There is some serious tech and hike a bike along the way, but it is well worth the trek. Team Granite MTB conquered this biking adventure during our annual team summit. The footage switches between my chest cam and team member Glen Davis. Enjoy!

This was my experience at climbing Cathedral Ledge NH USA - Thin Air Face - 5.6
About Thin Air Face:
The popular open face located to the right of the Prow, and ending at the obvious chimney of Standard Route. This wall contains one of the most popular routes in the White Mountains, Thin Air (5.6), which is a must-do for any visiting climber. It is also the home of many high quality face climbs such as the well protected Still in Saigon (5.8) and the technical and burly Missing Link (5.10a). Standard Route is an adventurous alternative that will have a 5.7 leader pushing his limits.

About Cathedral Ledge:
Cathedral is New Hampshire's best trad climbing destination. Here you can enjoy a wide variety of climbing, from 5.6 classics like Thin Air and Upper Refuse, to gnarly hard routes like the Prow and the Bridge of Khazad-dum, to some of the best aid routes like the Mordor Wall (A3). Be forwarned if you are coming from out west that the ratings may seem a little bit stiff, and be especially wary of anything rated 5.9+.
CAUTION: Due to the recent(2003) bolting wars, the existence of all fixed anchors and protection should be verified prior to your climb. No guidebook will have up to date info about these bolts and/or pins. Check beforehand at IME, EMS, or Ragged Mtn. Beginners Route 980' 5.5R ***
Pitch 5: 90' 5.5 Using the flake, climb over the steep headwall and onto the slab above. Friction moves lead out left to some hidden pockets and protection. Head up to an anchor at a small U-shaped ledge, The Smile Belay.
We did not complete this pitch. Note in the pitch 4 video I traversed right to another set of anchors. This route is not in the guide book however the pitch was the same difficulty and equally run out as the correct pitch.
Hiking Cathedral Ledge and White Horse Ledge | Echo Lake State Park, New Hampshire
This video is from day 3 of our White Mountains, New Hampshire trip. After hiking three 4,000 footers we decided to do an easier hike. White hiked in Echo Lake State Park, located just outside of North Conway, New Hampshire. The hike included going around the lake and up both the Cathedral Ledge and White Horse Ledge Trail. This state park is famous for its ledges which are great for rock climbing and ice climbing. In total this hike took us 4 hours and it was a total of 5.61 miles.
This hike is a very popular destination, therefore we used both microspikes and snowshoes. You can get away with just microspikes, however if hiking in the winter. The trails to the ledges are quite steep so use caution when hiking in the colder months.

White Horse Ledge, North Conway, New Hampshire with Mavic Pro Drone. Joseph - I don't Mind
Scenic drone flight over Echo Lake State Park in North Conway, New Hampshire. Music: Joseph, 'I Don't Mind'. White Horse Ledge and the Mount Washington Valley feature prominently. Shot with DJI's Mavic Pro drone. The light dusting of snow on White Horse Ledge makes it easy to see how the sheer granite face got it's name. Shot on February 3, 2018
The air temperature was 3 degrees Fahrenheit, so I didn't fly far from the launch point lest the batteries poop out. I had two additional batteries in my pocket, but it was too cold to stick around much longer.
Footage was edited and color graded using Blackmagic Design's DaVinci Resolve 14

A year-round resort area, North Conway is the largest village within the town of Conway, which is bounded on the east by the Maine state line. The White Mountain National Forest is to the west and north. Conway is home to Cathedral Ledge (popular with climbers), Echo Lake State Park, and Mount Cranmore. North Conway is known for its large number of outlet shops.
Chartered in 1765 by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth, the town is named for Henry Seymour Conway, ambitious son of a prominent English family, who was elected to the House of Commons at age twenty, fought at Culloden, and became Secretary of State. Early settlers called the area Pequawket (known colloquially as Pigwacket), adopting the name of the Abenaki Indian village which stretched down the Saco River to its stockaded center at Fryeburg, Maine.
North Conway is located in the White Mountains, with Mount Washington located to the northwest. The rugged terrain became popular in the 19th century with artists. Their paintings were known collectively as White Mountain art, which in turn attracted tourists to the area, particularly after the Portsmouth, Great Falls & Conway Railroad extended service in 1872 to North Conway. In 1874, the line built a Second Empire depot, designed by Nathaniel J. Bradlee. In 1932, snow trains began carrying enthusiasts to the birthplace of American skiing, as North Conway is known.
Increasing automobile travel brought the decline of trains. The railroad, then part of the Boston & Maine, abandoned passenger service to the area in 1961, and freight service in 1972. Subsequently, the Conway Scenic Railroad was established. Today, the line offers visitors a tour of the region, including Crawford Notch. The station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In the late 1980s, the White Mountain Airport closed and was redeveloped as a large outlet mall called Settlers' Green Outlet Village. Continued growth through the 1990s and 2000s in North Conway and the villages nearby made Conway the most populous community in Carroll County. Traffic congestion led to an overhaul of the road system, including widening Route 16 through North Conway village and constructing a road parallel to Route 16 to allow traffic to move between Redstone and Intervale uninterrupted. A bypass of the area is being developed.
North Conway remains a popular destination due to its shopping, recreation, and attractions.

White Mountains
Bartlett, New Hampshire
Pinkham Notch
Mt. Washington , N.H.
The White Mountains are a mountain range covering about a quarter of the state of New Hampshire and a small portion of western Maine in the United States. They are part of the northern Appalachian Mountains and the most rugged mountains in New England. The range is heavily visited due to its proximity to Boston and, to a lesser extent, New York City and Montreal.
Most of the area is public land, including the White Mountain National Forest and a number of state parks. Its most famous mountain is 6,288-foot (1,917 m) Mount Washington, which is the highest peak in the Northeastern U.S. and which held the record for fastest surface wind gust (231 miles per hour (372 km/h), over 100 m/s, in 1934) in the world for 76 years. Mount Washington is part of a line of summits, the Presidential Range, that are named after U.S. presidents and other prominent Americans.
The White Mountains also include the Franconia Range, Sandwich Range, Carter-Moriah Range and Kinsman Range in New Hampshire, and the Mahoosuc Range straddling the border between it and Maine. In all, there are 48 peaks within New Hampshire as well as one (Old Speck Mountain) in Maine over 4,000 feet (1,200 m), known as the Four-thousand footers.
The Whites are known for a system of alpine huts for hikers operated by the Appalachian Mountain Club. The Appalachian Trail crosses the area from southwest to northeast.
It is not clear where the name White Mountains came from. There is no record of what Native Americans called the range, although pre-Colonial names for many individual peaks are known.[1] The name and similar ones such as White Hills or Wine Hills are found in literature from Colonial times. According to tradition, the mountains were first sighted from shipboard off the coast near the Piscataqua estuary. The highest peaks would often be snow-capped, appearing white.

This was one of the scary pitches. Mostly all friction moves on some steep bulges in the slabs coupled with very few opportunities to place protection made this a run-out nightmare of a 5.5 for me : P
Gopro dies at the end. The battery was intermittent for the last half of the route.
