Flower Power (w/ Galaxy Hops) | Ithaca Beer Company | Beer Review | #629
Today, I'll be reviewing a beer from the Ithaca Beer Company, and it's their Flower Power (w/ Galaxy Hops), which is an American IPA that is brewed with Galaxy hops. I love the regular Flower Power, and this beer adds Galaxy hops in the boil and to the dry-hopping portions of the brewing process, so let's see if this beers improves upon a classic!
Commercial Description:
We brewed this special limited variation of our celebrated Flower Power IPA with an addition of Australian Galaxy hops to introduce an intense passion fruit and citrus character. Already well known for its punchy pineapple, citrus, floral flavor and aromas, as well as clover honey sweetness, this variation of Flower Power is complimented and accentuated by the Galaxy's hop unique qualities.
Galaxy hops are limited in availability here in the United States as they are grown in the Australian state of Tasmania and are sought to impart passion fruit, citrus zest, peach/stone fruit flavors.

Ithaca Nut Brown The Spit or Swallow Beer Review
Shagdog & Jammer enjoy Ithaca Brewing's Nut Brown Ale. In addition, Shagdog grabs his pussy and shows it to the World, Jammer sits by horrified! The guys make a movie recommendation, discuss relationships, and much, much, more!
Brewed by: Ithaca Beer Company New York, United States
The rich mahogany hue of the Nut Brown is the first thing you will notice about this complex, malty brew. A delicate blend of chocolate malt, caramel malt, and four other malts brings to this beer a chocolatey sweetness, and hints of coffee. The malt character is subtly balanced with Northdown and Fuggles hops.

Ithaca Beer Co. -- A Story about the Little Brewery that Could
Ithaca is a city with a strong sense of community and a passion for locally produced products. There are many local wineries, however people always questioned why there was no local brewery. Dan Mitchell, the founder of the Ithaca Beer Company, set out to answer that question by creating a brewery that would exemplify The Spirit of the Finger Lakes.
Ithaca Street front sign
The original concept for the brewery began in 1995, but it wasn't until December of 1997 that the brewing system was purchased. It was discovered by chance after investigating another system in Texas that looked great on paper, but wasn't adequate for the needs of the brewery. After passing on that system Dan had some time to kill and decided to travel around. During a visit to a brewpub in Austin, TX he discovered what would become our brewing system. He went in and asked them what kind of beers they made. They told him that they had stopped making beer and were actually preparing to sell their system. After checking it out the purchase was made and a month later the system was shipped up to Ithaca.
Five months of renovation took place at our 606 Elmira Rd. location to turn it in to a functional brewery. After all the hard work renovating and setting up the equipment we were ready to begin the actual process of creating beer! The operation started small with only a couple of people (Dan and our previous Brew Master Jeff Conuel) doing everything that needed to be done to get the business off the ground. From the making of the beer, the packaging, the selling, and the mountains of paperwork necessary to operate a brewery they did it all. In December of '98 the brewery officially opened.
Since then, we've come a long way and grown considerably through lots of tireless work by a very dedicated staff. Just recently our hard work paid off when we were awarded 2 medals at the Great American Beer Festival in Colorado in 2008.
Brewery ImageIthaca Beer Company now sells beer throughout New York State, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Ohio. Other states are in the works as we continue to expand our capacity. Even while growing we haven't forgotten our commitment to crafting quality beers and being a part of the community that has supported us. As always we strive to capture the spirit of the Finger Lakes and share it with you.

New York State Hops and Craft Beer Revival
New York is fermenting a renaissance. Once the leading producer of hops and beer in the United States, our state is beginning to see a vibrant revival in hops cultivation and the growth of microbreweries. At a Cornell Reunion 2014 lecture at Mann Library, Steve Miller, hops specialist with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County, and Randy Lacey ’77, MEng. ’99, owner of Hopshire Farm and Brewery in Freeville, N.Y., present a look at the history and current developments in the production of hops and the emergence of farm breweries in the state. This program was presented in conjunction with Mann Library’s summer exhibit, “For a Quart of Ale Is a Dish Fit for a King: The Craft Beer Tradition and Its Revival in New York State.”

Took a weekend trip up to visit my sister and her husband in upstate New York, where they're renting an adorable farmhouse. We ate some fantastic food from Ithaca Beer Company, toured Ithaca Commons, and even made our way over to The Glen - Watkins Glen State Park, a natural gorge formed by glaciers over thousands of years.
