Berghain
German court has ruled that renowned Berlin techno club Berghain provides high cultural events rather than just »entertainment,« and should accordingly be taxed at a lower rate. The club pays a 7% tax instead of 19% since 2016.

For the third edition of Real Scenes, RA goes to one of the most special places for electronic music in the world: Berlin. When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, techno became the underground soundtrack to the reunion between East and West. In recent years, it's become an international destination for ravers—a cheap place to party with clubs that are renowned throughout the world.
Techno has become a business in the meantime. Yet Berlin still maintains a credibility that other cities lack. To understand why, RA went to the German capital eager to find out about its unique history and the reasons behind its continued relevance.

Tresor is the biggest and most respected Techno club in Berlin. Its history began basically together with the creation of the city’s clubbing scene, right after Germany was unified. They started as a record label called Interfish at Ufo, the original center of Berlin house and techno. After its closure, the Tresor crew thought it would be a good idea to establish their own club. Their timing was perfect and they quickly became a popular venue, reconstructing and expanding the place several times over the years.
Tresor Club is set in an abandoned power plant spanning 22,000m² on Köpenicker Straße in Berlin’s Mitte neighborhood. It’s a labyrinth of concrete passages mazing into basement vaults and industrial halls. Just when you think you’ve discovered all of Tresor’s secrets, you realize you haven’t! Inside, there are three separate but connected floors: Globus and +4Bar for House and experimental electronic music, and, of course, the famed vault which, reached through a 30m long tunnel, uncompromisingly presents the Tresor sound. The sheer size of the building impresses and its derelict nature makes it reminiscent of a horror movie set: it holds several dancefloors with never-ending pounding music, dark red lit corners, a huge outside area, and of course amazing sound system and acoustics.
