In this video we will be taking a day trip from Osaka up Mount Hieizan which is located just east of Kyoto and is home to Enryakuji, one of the most important monasteries in Japan. Before taking the cable car up the mountain, we'll take a delightful boat cruise on Lake Biwa, the country's largest lake. After exploring the ancient temple complex, we'll ride the HIEI train along the Eizan train line back to Kyoto and eventually return to Osaka.

The Sai tō (西塔) Complex on Enryaku ji Temple (延暦寺) on Mt Hieizan in Kyoto！
In October of this year (2013) I went to Enryaku-ji Temple (延暦寺) on top of Mount HieiZan (比叡山). I have to admit, I have never been to this temple complex. There were not so many people, which made it easier to take pictures. It's very nice up there, clean air, not much noise and most of all quiet. The huge trees and complexes are impressive and there is so much history here, the original temple was founded in early Heian period (794 to 1185). The following video clip is an account of that hike through the woods of Hieizan (比叡山) and the different pavilions that make up the Sai-tō (西塔) area of this part of Enryaku-ji Temple (延暦寺) complex.

This is a must see when in the Kyoto area - But, if you do plan to visit, allow the full day. Or. You could do what we did and stayed the night at - That way you can wander around after the site has been closed or early morning before the hoards of tourists arrive. Access is easy - bus from Kyoto. Or train./cable-car/rope-way from either Kyoto or Sakamoto on the Lake Biwa side.You can also drive via the Drive-way.
