Foundry Smokestack
West End Toronto. May 3, 2010. Foundry Lofts Smokestack.
Globe and Mail:
For more than a century, a smokestack has cast a long shadow over Lansdowne Avenue near Davenport Road, where it exhaled the breath of hard labour for the Canada Foundry Company and Canadian General Electric.
Residents of the rapidly gentrifying area now fear the old chimney could face its last gasp, unless they can win a last-minute delay of its demolition, planned for today.
It's a fairly distinct piece and it really does add to the skyline in the area, said John Rudyk, who moved into his unit at the Foundry Lofts, a condominium inside one of the sprawling former Canada Foundry buildings on Lansdowne, when it was converted to housing two years ago. In a city that really doesn't value its heritage and its past, it seems, it really is something that's quite distinct.
That distinction was noted by city heritage officials in a 2004 report that identified several buildings, including the smokestack, as potentially worthy of protection. Erected in 1903, the buildings and chimney served Canada Foundry during production of steel and cast iron products, including railway tracks, bridge components, fences, grilles and staircases.
In 1923, the operation was absorbed by General Electric and retooled to produce power transformers until 1981.
The 25-hectare site has since been decontaminated and has been undergoing a phased transformation to residential use.
Last October, city officials reviewed the next phase of development, which includes the site of the smokestack, and agreed it should be removed to accommodate a road.
If the smokestack were to be saved, the road would have to be diverted around it, through a site slated to become a park within the development. The old brick stack would also require ongoing maintenance, which could be costly.
Mr. Rudyk acknowledged these challenges, but said he and other residents who only became aware of the demolition plans last Wednesday would like a delay to discuss whether these issues can be resolved. Mr. Rudyk called the office of Ward 17 Councillor Cesar Palacio to request the delay on Friday.
Mike Foderick, assistant to Mr. Palacio, told residents in an e-mail that ideally, the developer would hold off on demolition long enough for us to explore whether there is any possibility or community appetite for diverting the road around the smokestack ... and who would be willing to bear the cost and responsibility of maintaining the structure long-term. He said he would pursue the viability of this possibility over the weekend, but as of Sunday night, had nothing further to report.
For the moment, Mr. Rudyk and his neighbours can only hope those efforts pay off.
As residents, we see it as a high value-add because it's so distinctive and it gives [the development] some personality, he said.
