STORYLINE:
Prince Andrew, The Duke of York, and Sarah Ferguson, The Duchess of York on Monday commemorated the 67 British lives lost on September 11, 2001 during a ceremony in New York.
Addressing the assembled crowd, Prince Andrew said that the British Memorial Garden that had been built in Hanover Square, New York was a tribute to the 67 British lives lost during the attacks.
The shock and grief of New York felt on 9-11 was profoundly felt by us in the United Kingdom, amongst the victims just a few hundred yards from where we stand today was 67 Britons whose memory we cherish here today.
Taking part in the ceremony were 67 British police officers representing each British life lost during the attacks on the World Trade Centre five years ago.
Camilla Hellman, the founder of the Memorial Garden explained how all the components for the garden were British obtained from either England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
The stone is from Scotland and Wales and the South of England and the benches are made in Ireland and everything is from Britain, and I'm so proud of that, said Hellman.
Welsh soprano Rachel Schutz sang the National Anthems for both the UK and the US.
Also present this afternoon, were the Choir of Saint George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, the West Yorkshire Police Force Brass Band, the New York Scottish Pipes and Drums Band.
The leader of the House of Commons, Jack Straw, was in attendance, but did not speak at the ceremony.

9/11 Memorial Concert in Grosvenor Square photo video mix (Concert In The Rain)
Concert in the rain. A Concert of Reflection took place outside the US Embassy in Grosvenor Square as part of commemorative events in the UK to mark the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York. 11th September 2011.
Music: Da Pacem Domine (Give Peace, Oh Lord) by contemporary Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. Performed by The Byron Consort of the Harrow School.
The concert went on in the soaking rain on Sunday evening. Amazingly, rainbow could be seen through the rain over Grosvenor Square.
Sir Christopher Meyer, Ambassador to the United States at the time of the attacks on the World Trade Centre, paid his respects to the families of 67 British people, killed in the massacre and of all of the victims of terror.
The British Memorial Garden Trust UK Ltd in association with The September Concert Foundation and September 11th United Kingdom Families Support Group presented the concert that featured the Welsh Guards and the Harrow School Byron Consort Choir among its performers.
I was totally enchanted by the heavenly piece Da Pacem Domine, gracefully performed by The Byron Consort choristers. Cheerful Welsh Guards band brought the concert in the rain to an optimistic finale.

9/11 Memorial Garden.wmv
The poem I wrote and read here (see below) is in response to a request from an American friend of a British victim of the 9/11 attacks who asked if Graham could film in the Grosvenor Square Memorial Garden. It appears unlikely that he will ever come to London. We were glad to oblige, and trust no one will think we have been intrusive; we have not included the three bronze plaques containing the names of the deceased within the small pavilion as the camera did not focus clearly on all of them and we felt it had to be all or none.
Among several poems I have written about 9/11 I have chosen two that I hope people will like, especially anyone who may have lost a loved one or friend on that terrible September day in 2001. Losing a loved one or friend is awful enough, but in the course of a terrorist attack it has to be even worse, the sheer futility of it all conspiring with its suddenness and sickening horror to haunt us forever. In my experience, and contrary to the old adage, time does not heal the hurt of loss; it only helps us live with it, and move on.
Moving on from the death of someone close to us is never easy although we know it is what they would want us to do. Yet, moving on doesn't mean leaving anyone behind. It may be but small comfort sometimes, but the dead are always with us in our hearts. True, even happy memories cannot compensate for the loss of someone's physical presence in our lives, but this is where the lasting, spiritual nature of love comes into its own and makes itself felt. This is why the terrorist cannot win. For the power of love is far, far greater than any misplaced hatred, mistrust, revenge or desire for martyrdom. And nowhere is the power of love greater than where it embraces the human spirit for good rather than ill.
IN LOVING MEMORY
Years on from terror in the sky,
and still the same question - why?
What manner of humankind
learns such contempt for human life,
taking mother from child, husband
from wife; loving parents losing
a son, a daughter, all fallen victims
to mass slaughter?
Places like any other places
at the start of another working day,
faces like any other faces looking
as if to say, 'Oh, roll on home time!'
His, telling family responsibilities;
hers too, but softer, cool...
hopeful that the kids will have
a good day at school
Twin towers, gone. Faces there
sure to linger, lend us the strength to live,
hold our heads high, make them
proud of us, stoic ruins of Loving Memory;
Reality, crueller than any fairy story
told to generations to distinguish
good from evil. Peace candles, nothing
and no one can extinguish
Though unthinkable terror seem to win,
to Love, always, the spoils of its sin

LOST AND FOUND
Friends, family, lovers,
gone - but always part of us,
especially in twilight hours,
as we pause in quietude
to contemplate our solitude;
each goodbye...
lingering lights in the eye
over a treasure chest
Let the exquisite amber
of a fallen leaf part exorcise
our grief. Autumn's glory
all around or winter's story
sure to keep Hope alive;
spring flowers, heartbeats
below ground; friends, family,
lovers...

STORYLINE:
Queen Elizabeth II challenged the United Nations on Tuesday to spearhead the international response to global dangers and promote prosperity and dignity for all the world's inhabitants.
The 84-year-old British monarch told diplomats from the 192 UN member states that the United Nations had evolved into a force of common good.
Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Philip, flew to New York from Canada for the five-hour visit on Tuesday that also included stops at the Ground Zero site where the twin World Trade Centre towers were destroyed on September 11, 2001.
Greeted at the UN headquarters by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and General Assembly President Ali Abdessalam Treki and their wives, they posed for photos in front of UN flags, before visiting a memorial to UN peacekeepers and staff members killed in the line of duty.
Walking in to the General Assembly, the British Monarch was given a standing ovation by diplomats.
Speaking as monarch of 16 UN member states and head of the Commonwealth of 54 countries with a population of nearly two (b) billion people, Elizabeth recalled the dramatic changes in the world since she last visited the United Nations in 1957, especially in science, technology and social attitudes.
She also praised the UN's aims and values, promoting peace, security and justice, fighting hunger, poverty and disease and protecting civil rights and liberties.
The challenge now is to continue to show this clear and convening leadership while not losing sight of your ongoing work to secure the security, prosperity and dignity of our fellow human beings, she said.
Later she made a stop at the Ground Zero site where the twin World Trade Centre towers were destroyed on September 11, 2001.
Elizabeth placed a wreath of New York-grown red peonies, roses, lilies and black-eyed Susans at the site of the attacks, and chatted with victims' families and first responders.
She then left in a motorcade to visit the British Garden of Remembrance, built to honour the 67 Britons killed in 2001.

Scene outside US Embassy early morning UK time
(14 Sep 2001) A day of mourning for the victims of the terrorist attacks in the United States has begun around the world.
In Britain - which lost possibly hundreds of nationals in the disaster- books of condolences were in place in Grosvenor Square gardens - a small park outside the US Embassy in London.
Security around the embassy complex has been stepped up in the wake of the attacks.
Those wishing to pay tribute to the victims of the terrorist onslought passed through stringent security checks before entering the park.
After writing messages of condolence in private, mourners walked towards the hundreds of floral and personal tributes that have been laid at the foot of a statue of former US President Franklin D Roosevelt.
Piles of bouquets have been left by mourners, along with other forms of tribute such as photographs, toys and handwritten cards.
Items symbolising the US such as bagels, apples and dollar bills had also been left.
People - many dressed in black - gazed solemnly at the tributes, visibly moved by some of the message of condolence.
Some had risen early to come to the park before work.
Others had come the night before.
Britain will pay further tribute to the dead in a national three minute silence at 1100 local time, followed by a memorial ceremony in St Paul's Cathedral attended by the Queen, Prime Minister Tony Blair and the US Ambassador to London.

It would be dangerous for the whole world, it would be dangerous for the region, for Iran to have a nuclear weapon. But, also, you are dealing with a country that has expressly said that it wants to wipe Israel off the map. And so I think it is a clear danger to the world, Iran having a nuclear weapon, and that is why I think Britain and America and other countries are taking every action we can to pile the pressure on Iran to take a different path.

STORYLINE:
British Prime Minister David Cameron wrapped up his official trip to the United States with a visit to the New York City area on Thursday.
Early in the day, he visited Newark, New Jersey, the state's largest city, where Mayor Cory Booker played host.
Booker and Cameron discussed issues of mutual concern including some of the city's programmes for education, economic development and child and family support that could be replicated in Britain.
It's great to have this session where we can quiz you on some of the projects you are running, Cameron said.
Booker then gave Cameron a walking tour of downtown Newark which included a stop in a local coffee house.
Cameron then crossed the Hudson River, with his wife Samantha, on his way to New York City.
They continued their whirlwind tour of the United States by making a sojourn to the World Trade Center site and the memorial for the lives lost in the terrorist attacks.
The couple first ascended to the 21st floor of Tower One of the newly constructed One World Trade Center.
Cameron then took a moment to visit the reflecting pool where he and his wife met up with Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
At least 67 citizens of the United Kingdom died at the World Trade Center on 11 September 2001.
Afterwards, Cameron stopped by the New York Stock Exchange for a closed meeting.
In the afternoon, he spoke to students and faculty members in a question-and-answer session at New York University.

9/11: The Day That Tied America, Britain and Israel Together - The Trumpet Daily
In the days that followed 9/11, there was a tremendous show of support for the United States. Especially strong was the alliance between the United States, Britain and Israel. In 2001, the band around these three brothers was solid, but it didn't last long. In this program, Stephen Flurry shows how the ties that once bound these brothers together are now completely unraveling.

3. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Vladimir Putin, President of Russia
Yesterday at 8 o'clock in the evening Moscow time, President Bush called me and announced that within the next hour and a half the operation against terrorist bases would begin in Afghanistan. I have no doubt that the leaders of the United States and President Bush will do everything in their power so that the peaceful citizens will not suffer. I have no doubts at all.

5. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Vladimir Putin, President of Russia
Such (September 11 bombings)a colossal loss cannot pass unnoticed or go without an adequate response I think that this campaign was not only expected by those who fight terrorism, but was expected by the terrorists themselves. The terrorists are perfectly aware of what they are doing and expected this development of events. Moreover, they even provoked this situation from the world leaders. But I don't think they were prepared for this.
6. Wide shot meeting
7. SOUNDBITE: ( Russian) Vladimir Putin, President of Russia
The Russian Federation has already announced the parameters of its participation in the anti-terrorist operation, and they remain unchanged. We have deployed a wide-scale humanitarian aid campaign for the Afghan people and will continue to do so. The terrorists themselves provoked the leadership of the leading countries of the world to such a turn of events. But this time, the terrorists miscalculated. We will coordinate our actions with the international community; with our American and European partners.
8. Wide shot exteriors Kremlin
STORYLINE:
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday that he was certain the United States was doing everything possible to avoid civilian losses in Afghanistan.
Putin was addressing key Russian Cabinet members who meet every Monday.
Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov told the meeting that security had been stepped up around Russian embassies in several countries bordering Afghanistan.
Putin said that the U.S.-led attacks on Afghanistan were justified, considering the thousands of people who were killed when hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Pennsylvania.
Last week, Putin offered Russian airspace for humanitarian flights and pledged to provide Afghanistan's opposition forces battling the ruling Taliban militia with weapons and equipment. Russia has also sent its own humanitarian aid to Afghan refugees through Tajikistan.
