EXPLORING TBILISI, the historic NARIKALA FORTRESS in GEORGIA
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit Narikala which is an ancient fortress overlooking Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, and the Kura River. The fortress consists of two walled sections on a steep hill between the sulphur baths and the botanical gardens of Tbilisi. On the lower court there is the recently restored St Nicholas church. Newly built in 1996–1997, it replaces the original 13th-century church that was destroyed in a fire. The new church is of prescribed cross type, having doors on three sides.
Georgia, a country at the intersection of Europe and Asia, is a former Soviet republic that’s home to Caucasus Mountain villages and Black Sea beaches. It’s famous for Vardzia, a sprawling cave monastery dating to the 12th century, and the ancient wine-growing region Kakheti. The capital, Tbilisi, is known for the diverse architecture and mazelike, cobblestone streets of its old town.
The fortress was established in the 4th century as Shuris-tsikhe (i.e., Invidious Fort). It was considerably expanded by the Umayyads in the 7th century and later, by king David the Builder (1089–1125). The Mongols renamed it Narin Qala (i.e., Little Fortress). Most of extant fortifications date from the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1827, parts of the fortress were damaged by an earthquake and demolished.

Travel Georgia - Visiting the Ananuri Fortress
Take a tour of Ananuri in Georgia -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Nestled next to the Zhinvali reservoir, the Ananuri Fortress dates back to the 13th century.
During the summer season the vibrant colors of the lush green forested mountains and the cool blue of the reservoir make it a breathtaking sight.
One of the two churches within the complex, the Church of Assumption, has several decorated facades containing many symbols of religious iconography as well as human, animal and floral images.
While most of the upper fortification is still intact, time has reduced the lower fortifications to ruins.
For the art enthusiasts, the Church of Assumption also houses the remnants of several frescoes that survived an ancient fire.
The dukes of ages past have been laid to rest behind the churches doors, a stirring reminder of the fortresses bloody past.

STORYLINE:
Mobile veterinary units have been created and stricter borders controls are in place in Georgia, as it responds to the outbreak of bird flu in neighbouring Turkey.
Teams of health officials have been travelling around the country inspecting all suspicious cases among poultry.
In the Akhalatsikhe region, close to the Turkish border, a container holding at least three dead birds was discovered.
Veterinary experts travelled to the district to examine the birds and take samples to send to a laboratory in Tbilisi.
After collecting samples the Georgian authorities fumigated and set fire to the carcasses.
Veterinarians have been dealing with another similar case of dead birds being dumped.
At the Red Bridge border crossing near Tbilisi, sanitary workers tested more dead birds before spraying and incinerating them.
The samples have been sent to the Tbilisi Veterinary lab, which was created with the help of American money.
It is the only facility in the region capable of carrying out tests on poultry for N5H1 virus.
The lab has been busy conducting tests but so far officials have said the deadly N5H1 strain has not been found in Georgia.
The outbreak of bird flu in neighbouring Turkey has also forced Georgia to step up border inspections and bio-security controls.
Sanitation units are working around the clock at all border crossings, including the Red Bridge area on the border with Azerbaijan.
Vehicles crossing to Georgia are being inspected by the special teams and sprayed with fumigants in an attempt to prevent the spread N5H1.

Spectacular view from Narikala Fortress-Georgia Tbilisi
Narikala is an ancient fortress overlooking Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, and the Mtkvari River. The fortress consists of two walled sections on a steep hill between the sulphur baths and the botanical gardens of Tbilisi. On the lower court there is the recently restored St Nicholas church. Newly built in 1996–1997, it replaces the original 13th-century church that was destroyed in a fire. The new church is of prescribed cross type, having doors on three sides.[1] The internal part of the church is decorated with the frescos showing scenes both from the Bible and history of Georgia.[2]
The structure was established in the 4th century as a Sasanian citadel called Shuris-tsikhe (i.e., Invidious Fort).[3] It was considerably expanded by the Umayyads in the 7th century and later, by king David the Builder (1089–1125).
