This rare black and white video was taken by American tourists traveling in China in the late 1920's. Here they visit the Ming Dynasty tombs NW of Beijing. Amazing footage of the sacred way leading to the tombs, lined with stone animal and guardian figures. Enormous stone camels, elephants, lions, and horses line the way to the tombs of the Emperors.

1920's film of China: American tourists visit famous temples in Beijing
This black and white video was taken by American tourists in China in the late 1920's. It's packed with gorgeous architectural details of the Temple of Confucius (dating to the early 1300's and built to honor the ancient philosopher) and the White Stupa, a Buddhist tower built in 1279 under the orders of emperor Khublai Khan. This famous landmark in Beijing houses the relics of Buddha, much as a pagoda would. These monuments are located north of the Forbidden City in Beijing.

Very rare travel videos taken by American tourists in China in the late 1920's. Here they visit the Arrow tower and Chongwenmen Gate surrounding the inner city of Beijing. A street scene shows trolleys and rickshaws, a snapshot of life in China almost a century ago. The Gate and Tower were destroyed in the 1960's to create wide new streets in the area.

After touring Beijing and the Great Wall, they visit the Ming Dynasty tombs NW of the city. 13 Ming Dynasty Emperors were buried here in the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. Other films document the enormous gateway and stone animals that line the sacred way leading up to these famous tombs.

1920's film of China: Panorama of Peking (Beijing) from City Wall
Panoramic views of Beijing (then called Peking) in the late 1920's, before skyscrapers and urban sprawl. The swooping eaves of the Imperial rooftops in the Forbidden City were the tallest buildings and visually dominated the city. The video is one of many taken by an American couple who traveled in China and other faraway places.

This rare video was taken by American tourists in China in the late 1920's. Here they visit the White Stupa Temple built in 1279, also known as the Miaoying Temple (Temple of Marvelous Response). Stupas are traditionally found in India, and contain the relics of Buddha, similar to a pagoda. The filmmaker refers to it as the Temple of 10,000 Buddhas. Also included are views of the Temple of Confucius, dating to the early 1300's, and views of the Forbidden City.
