Paris 16th Arrondissement - 20 in 20 Day 16 - Palais de Tokyo to Louis Vuitton Foundation
Paris' 16th arrondissement is another one of the chill outer arrondissements, with some really beautiful sections, parks, and lots of great museums. Grab my guide to Paris here: to find that one good coffee shop at least ;D

My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlog daily, and love pizza a little too much.

FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? On and off for over two years.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a Draw My Life video that explains a lot here:
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself:
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here:
Do you speak French? Oui.
You talk a lot about the books you're working on, what are they about? - They're sci-fi (and fantasy) and I've got a decent pitch for you here:
Do you make money off YouTube? - Ha, no. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos:
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game):
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. This is the US one:
And here's the French wishlist:

A Walk Around the 16th Arrondissement of Paris
The 16th arrondissement of Paris (XVIe arrondissement) is one of the 20 arrondissements of the capital city of France. In spoken French, this arrondissement is referred to as seizième.
The arrondissement includes part of the Arc de Triomphe and a concentration of museums between the Place du Trocadéro and the Place d'Iéna, complemented in 2014 by the Fondation Louis Vuitton.
With its ornate 19th-century buildings, large avenues, prestigious schools, museums, and various parks, the arrondissement has long been known as one of French high society's favourite places of residence to such an extent that the phrase le 16e (French pronunciation: has been associated with great wealth in French popular culture. Indeed, the 16th arrondissement of Paris is France's third richest district for average household income, following the 7th, and Neuilly-sur-Seine, both adjacent.
The 16th arrondissement hosts several large sporting venues, including: the Parc des Princes, which is the stadium where Paris Saint-Germain football club plays its home matches; Roland Garros Stadium, where the French Open tennis championships are held; and Stade Jean-Bouin, home to the Stade Français rugby union club. The Bois de Boulogne, the second-largest public park in Paris (behind only the Bois de Vincennes), is also located in this arrondissement.

Passy (16th Arrondissement of Paris) | Explore France
Passy was a commune on the outskirts of Paris. In 1658, hot springs were discovered around which spa facilities were developed. This attracted Parisian society and English visitors, some of whom made the area, which combined attractive countryside with both modest houses and fine residences, their winter retreat.
Passy is popularly known as the hometown of Balzac...as well as some of the notable people in history and pop culture.

Sunday Drive in the 16th Arrondissement (Paris, France)
The Dinkmobile is a 1995 Citröen ZX Flash -- with power nothing. Runs on diesel (which is now being discouraged in France due to problems with Japan) and gets great fuel efficiency, is small and unobtrusive. Cars with automatic transmissions have virtually no resale value in France -- everything's manual here. Gasoline is costly and is not a popular fuel. (Many vehicles are hybrids, or electric, or run on other alternative methods, especially municipality vehicles.) It's illegal to honk your horn in France, and you won't hear screaming sirens (very much). There are strict nuisance noise laws.
Cars are discouraged in Paris for good reason, and parking passes have to be obtained at City Halls in each arrondissement, from what I gather. The bournes no longer accept coins or credit cards. Street parking is usually free on weekends, however. You might have to park a bit farther away from where you want to go and walk or take public transportation. Public transportation is slow, and does not run 24 hours a day -- but it's generally good value for your money, especially if you buy a carnet (ten-pack) of métro-bus-tramway tickets. (You can get these in tobacco shops and in métro stations -- if you're not put off by interacting with a French computer, they can be obtained at tramway stops, also, with a credit or debit card -- American credit cards are increasingly not welcome here, however.) You get about a 40% discount by buying ten at a time. Generally speaking, the tourist transport passes are not cost-effective. You're better off just to buy a carnet, as do the locals.
We visited the Auteuil area of the 16th on this quiet Summer Sunday, right before the Assumption holiday on Monday. France is still in full Summer vacation mode. Many businesses shut down for an entire month. Many shops and even restaurants in Paris are closed on Sundays. July and August are best avoided in Europe altogether (it's usually very hot and unpleasant).
The métro for this area is Auteuil. This is a quiet part of the city few outsiders bother with. The architecture here is outstanding and there is a distinctly un-citylike ambiance to the place.
Paris 16th arrondissement
Can You Believe This Is the 16th Arrondissement of Paris?
It is! This is a green walking path along some of the Petite Ceinture ring railroad built around what were then the City's outskirts during the Second Empire.
This is sort of near Porte de Passy and Ranelagh, and I walked in the direction of Auteuil.
These Petite Ceinture parks in Paris are new and more will open soon, so check a very recent map to see where you can enter them.

Long Memories (Walking in the 16th Arrondissement, Paris)
When you have a long memory and remember what people did, what they said, the way things were in the past, it can be disconcerting to say the least if they reappear in your life and you notice they are telling outright lies. This recently happened with me on YouTube. There's nothing I can or should do about it but mind my own ways.
My interview for FRANCE CULTURE was over and I was walking (turned out to be quite far, and uphill from the River Seine) to the métro PASSY, and school was letting out for the day. I saw many nou-nous (nannies) and cute little children. I remembered being a live-in mother's helper myself (cooking, cleaning, shopping, caring for three very young children in the States, honest work and a way to relocate and get out of poverty), and it was educational to say the least. Whatever I'd learned about being a housewife and mother was put to practical use, and it usually prevented me in later years from wanting to take on the burdens of home and family.
This posh residential part of the city is often overlooked by visitors, as there are few shops and famous sites, but that's a pity! Near Trocadéro and its known attractions such as the Eiffel Tower, head over Passy way and at least visit the fascinating cemetery. You will be surprised who's buried there and how they died, some of them. It's a history lesson and very beautiful.
One of my favorite restaurants, BRASSERIE DE LA POSTE, is over by Trocadéro, on Rue Longchamps. 19th c., Alsatian in flavor, kind of Art Nouveau, very authentic. A reservation is a good idea, as well as being there promptly at noon or 7 pm for a slow meal. Platters of raw shellfish, fine white Alsatian wines, portly waiters in white aprons, confit de canard, it's full of salt and likely to give you a gout attack, but it's money well spent.
While in sturdy, waterproof shoes (it rained intermittently), my feet were quickly sore from the cobblestones and distances involved. The weather is usually a challenge here -- a portable change of footwear is a good idea.

Many villas, or private streets, mews or building groups are private and you cannot gain access unless invited.
The 16th is very large and known as a posh area, but the parts of it which do not have major tourist sites are possibly even more interesting.
