Australia Vlog #12 - Kingaroy and Bundaberg
Thanks for watching, enjoy! Scroll down for more...
30th March - 7th April
After leaving Fraser Island we experienced some of the wind and rain from ex-cyclone Debbie, including a flooded campsite. However, it was nothing compared to the devastation caused elsewhere! We then drove to Kingaroy and went to the Peanut Van, Coomba Falls and the Bunya Mountains. Sadly, 3 days of cloud meant we couldn't go the observatory. On to Bundaberg, where we visited the Rum Distillery and the Ginger Beer Factory. Of course, it would be rude to leave empty handed. We spent a few days at Agnes Water and 1770 to get the last spot of surfing and then did a lot of driving. We drove through Rockhampton during the peak of the flooding towards Mackay.

TropAg 2019 Early Bird Rego ends August 30
A stellar line-up of international experts in agriculture and food production, from climate-impacted regions of the world, will gather in Brisbane from 11 to 13 November for the TropAg conference.
From protecting beer production against climate variability, to boosting food production using gene editing and nanotechnology, the conference will investigate shaping the science of tomorrow for agricultural and food production systems for both advanced and developing economies.
“With the global population expected to reach over nine billion by 2050, the greatest pressure will likely be experienced in the world’s tropical and sub-tropical zones - which is home to half the world’s population and fastest growing economies,” said conference chair Professor Robert Henry.
“TropAg brings leading scientists and innovators together to address climate challenges such as heat, drought and floods – and increase production of nutritious and safe food by 70 percent in the next 30 years.”
Keynote speakers confirmed to present during the third international TropAg Conference, to be held on November 11-13 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre include:
Mr Alfred de Vries - Senior Program Officer, Animal Production - Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Dr Lawrence Haddad - Executive Director - Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN)
Professor Mark Howden - Director, Climate Change Institute - Australian National University
Ms Birgitte Skadhauge - Vice President, Carlsberg Research Laboratory - Carlsberg Group
Mr Derrick Thompson - Senior Manager, Key Accounts & Business Development - Hitachi Australia
Professor Pamela Ronald - Founding Director, Institute for Food and Agricultural Literacy - UC Davis
Dr Usha Zehr - Director and Chief Technology Officer - Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company (Mahyco)
The TropAg program includes five themes across field crops, horticulture, livestock, nutritious food and an AgFutures stream showcasing Queensland’s latest technology and innovations in digital and data platforms, robotics, satellites and biotechnologies,” Professor Henry said.
A key feature of the conference is an alliance of northern Australia research providers including - The University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, James Cook University, Central Queensland University and University of Southern Queensland – to deliver 40 scientific symposia sessions to be presented over three days.
Around 750 delegates are expected to attend the conference from 50 countries around the world. TropAg2019 will feature 300 speakers presenting in plenary and symposia, and a number of networking and social events run throughout the week.
“Australian producers are known for producing high quality, clean and green produce – in some of the toughest tropical and sub-tropical environments,” Professor Henry said.
Registrations for TropAg are now open, with around 750 delegates from across the world expected to attend including researchers, growers, investors, agriculture industry leaders, policy makers and agribusiness professionals.
The TropAg preliminary program and registration details are available from the TropAg website tropagconference.org

Queensland Backs Cryptocurrency Point-of-Sale Project for Tourism
The Queensland government in Australia is backing a cryptocurrency point-of-sale system that officials believe will help boost tourism throughout the area. Thus far, they have given over $8 million in Australian dollars ($6 million USD) to roughly 70 different companies that will work to inspire innovation and create new ideas within the regions travel space. The project is headed by the digital currency startup TravelbyBit , which sells travel experiences online using cryptocurrency. The company has received over $74,000 USD ($100,000 AUD) in federal grant money to fund its new system. Tourism is one of Queenslands most important industries, says innovation minister Kate Jones. TravelbyBit has devised a clever way to make it easier for visitors to our state to pay for their purchases with a growing number of local businesses accepting cryptocurrency payments. Thats why weve invested to help them scale-up their operations and create more jobs in Queensland. Among the first major businesses adopting cryptocurrency payment practices include the Bundaberg Rum Distillery and Museum, which is visited by several thousand tourists each year, and the Bundaberg Airport. Thus far, TravelbyBits digital payment protocols have been implemented into over 150 merchants across the continent, though Queensland boasts the highest rate of adoption. Though bitcoin is its staple currency, TravelbyBit also accepts Litecoin, Dash, Ethereum and XEM. Company co-founder and CEO Caleb Yeoh explains, We have partnered with Brisbane Airport Corporation to launch the worlds first digital currency-friendly airport and integrated our cutting edge, blockchain-powered point-of-sale system across the regional tourism towns of 1770 and Agnes Water. With this next phase of technology, we are targeting a different brand of tourist the tech-savvy traveler from anywhere in the world that is looking to book travel experiences ahead of their trip and use digital currency to pay for their adventures. Other businesses to receive federal monies include the Townsville-based FlyFreely , which has developed a software system that handles flight planning and approval processes for commercial drones. The venture has garnered approximately $185,000 ($250,000 AUD), while Visional Technologies has received $74,000 ($100,000 AUD) to boost its ultra-fast electronic vehicle charging platform. Jones states, These companies will use the funds to ramp up market development and expand their workforce. Through a highly competitive, independently assessed process, they showed they have innovative products, talent, and the right mindsets to take their businesses to new levels and reach new markets. In addition, Queensland is planning to shell out a further $54 million ($73 million AUD) over the next four years through industry research fellowships and other entrepreneurial programs. We will ensure we back our entrepreneurial spirit, and grow opportunities for business and industry, assures Treasurer Jackie Trad. #cryptocurrency #travelbybit #australia #tourism #pos #adoption

Laser Cleaning Captain Cooks HMS Endeavour Kentledge pieces
At the end of December we were lucky enough to work alongside Australian National Maritime Museum to undertake a non-abrasive coating removal to several Kentledge (Pig Iron Ballast) pieces from Captain Cooks HMS Endeavour. These pieces of ballast were discarded by Cptn Cook on the 10th of June 1770 when their vessel struck the Great Barrier Reef. They were later found, encased in coral, on the ocean floor in 1969 and since been treated with different conservation methods.
In the this video you see PLC working in collaboration with ANMM to remove a clear coating in preparation for a new protective coating to be applied for exhibition. The whole conservation undertook four stages of treatment.
1st a manual pre treatment
2nd laser spallation to release the bonding of the film
3rd Low pressure dry ice blasting to remove the spallated coating
4th the reapplication of protective coating in preparation for public exhibition.
