Paris 17th Arrondissement - 20 in 20 Day 17 - Batignolles and Martin Luther King Park Paris
Paris' 17th arrondissement is a more residential outer district, but it has some wonderful parks and shops if you know where to look. Grab my guide to Paris here: to find my coffee recommendation along with a few other pointers for the 17th arrondissement of Paris.

FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? On and off for over two years.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a Draw My Life video that explains a lot here:
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself:
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here:
Do you speak French? Oui.
You talk a lot about the books you're working on, what are they about? - They're sci-fi (and fantasy) and I've got a decent pitch for you here:
Do you make money off YouTube? - Ha, no. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos:
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game):
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. This is the US one:
And here's the French wishlist:

Paris has 20 arrondissements, each with its own city hall (Mairie), mayor and four quarters (probably based on the old parish system). Lacking major tourist attractions but full of authentic charm and history, the 17th is quite something. Haussmann's replanning of the city on a major scale in the 19th century can clearly be seen here, and there are beautiful buildings, large and small, from that period. A villa is an impasse or a group of buildings (usually), and at least one can be seen on this clip. These tend to be highly desirable places to live.
Le Petit Ceinture was an outer/innerbelt rainway system encircling Paris. It fell into disuse long ago. Up until a few years ago, once per year or so, people could ride parts of it for fun, but I think that has stopped. Some of this sadly abandoned but useful rail line (corruption and bad planning the culprits) can be seen in this clip, though it just appears as an oasis of green trees to your left. Parts of it have been covered with tennis courts and such. Now, Paris is having to reinstall tramway systems at great cost and inconvenience. It's a darn shame and something most cities let happen -- buses were promoted.
Sundays are very quiet in France, and most of Paris is closed on Sundays, but we visited the Square de Batignolles, a beautiful park designed by Haussmann, an oasis of green with a duck pond, water features, an orangerie, a tiny grotto, and places to chill out. A walk in the Batignolles quarter of the 17th revealed beautiful buildings, mews-like streets and plazas, quite a few restaurants, florists and cafés open and busy, and NO TOURISTS ANYWHERE. It has a village-like feeling, yet is elegant as can be, despite train tracks to Gare Saint Lazare and a huge construction project for an Olympic Village which never happened. A great many big hotels have gone up here and are still going up, and if you like the Ibis chain, you might consider their huge tower here. Your stay in Paris will show you some of the real character of the city if you stay around here, and remember, the métro system is pretty darn user-friendly. Yes, it closes overnight, but neither Paris nor France in general are night places. The smartest visitors get up early and do their sightseeing in the morning, first thing, stopping at noon for lunch and a siesta, going back out in the afternoon to stroll, shop and hang out.

Interesting Architecture -- Paris, France (17th Arrondissement)

Check out that street full of mansions! We checked the Internet when we got home and these are very famous buildings. Most were city single-family homes. Hôtel Particulier is French for mansion.
Few people visit the 17th arrondissement, which is a shame. When you get near the outer city limits of Paris, things tend to get VERY interesting. Everyone who visits tends to stay in the center. Many of the near-suburbs which have borders contiguous with Paris are terrific, and there are métros, buses, tramways and rentabikes to get you there and back. These can be the smartest places to stay -- way cheaper, more authentic, and perfectly connected to the city itself by a very good public transportation system.
I met an Australian lawyer here on business, and he always stays in a hotel at the métro stop MAIRIE DE CLICHY. He just takes the métro to his appointments from there, loves the prices and the shops and services -- way affordable by Paris standards. I recommend the hotel F1 on Avenue Lenine in Saint-Denis, but beware, it's only 39 euros per night, this is where smart budget travelers stay, and it's often fully booked. There's a full range of shops and services nearby, quite a bit of free legal parking, many ways to get into Paris for the price of a ticket, lots of local sites of interest, and so on. If you stay there, try to get a room overlooking the cemetery, however. Avenue Lenine is noisy.
Sunday is down-time in France. Everyone recharges their batteries. Most of Paris shuts down on Sundays but the city has many museums it runs which are free to the public, for your after-lunch culture fix. Sunday lunch in France is long, pastry is eaten, and everyone talks and unwinds. Try to get invited to someone's home -- always bring flowers. Never bring wine! The etiquette here is complex!

Walkin' In The 17th Arrondissement, Paris (April)
I don't know why once in a blue moon my auto-focus doesn't work, but I decided to upload this clip anyway. This is Rue de Bayen in Paris, near Metro Ternes on the 2 line. There was a lovely but pricey market running here this morning -- it probably does every Wednesday morning. This is, of course, a posh area (portside out starboard home) and was fun for me to gawk at, dressed up as though I belonged there, ha ha!
Traffic is noisy, and without screens for the windows, or air conditioners, and having only single-pane glass windows in most cases, many of these fancy residences are surely quite noisy (but the well to do always have a place in the country, no matter how modest). The air is foul here, and the soot from the pollution atrocious. Always carry a small bottle of water with you -- the dirty air makes your mouth dry and nasty-tasting, and if you don't have something to drink with you, you'll end up in one costly café after another! Which can be lovely if you have deep pockets . . .
I noticed again today what I've noticed for years -- women don't wear stockings here in Paris. Stockings are only for mistresses and prostitutes. They go bare-legged happily from about March until October, often looking smashing. I don't know how they pull it off. But they do, even when their hairstyles are dreadful. It's just amazing.
The French tend to be petit -- fine-boned. In fact, statistically speaking, they're the second-shortest nationality in the EU, second only to the Portuguese (who are also the worst drivers, second only to the French). I rarely see very obese people here, except in my poor ghetto nabe, or where there are lots of North Africans -- whether black or Arab, they all seem to be very chunky. Elsewhere, they tend to be maddeningly slender. Many have no asses! No butts! It's hard not to stare. They're practically concave!!
It took me an hour and a half to get to my appointment from where I live, close to the Paris city limits. Give yourself lots of traveling time in Paris. It's not a big city, but it takes a long time to get from point A to point B. If you arrive early, have a seat and watch the world go by. And feel like the inferior non-French lowly life form that you are! No one can make you feel small as can a Parisian! Their aim is true, and your self-esteem will vanish like your money, in this city!

April in Paris -- Market Morning, Rue de Bayen in the 17th Arrondissement
The closest métro is Ternes on the 2 line.
Money is no object when you live here. Blissfully unaware that recessions rage elsewhere, Parisians are upbeat in their uptight, trank-popping way, as our GDP roared last year and is up so much this year, the economy appears overheated in some respects.
I continue to note the barelegged Parisian ladies, something I noticed on my first visit here in 1993. Only mistresses and prostitutes wear stockings.
I was dressed to kill, ready for a power meeting with some PTB. Stylish shoes, but a spare pair for the long ride home to the near-suburb in which I reside, for my tired feet. I never wear diamonds before 6 pm, but chose my battle togs carefully this morning. Even the scent must be just so in Paris. ALIEN seemed right this morning, ha ha! That's how I feel these days, anyway!
I had to get up at 5:30 am -- you should allow two full hours to get from point A to point B in Paris. If you're early, great -- you can sit and pull yourself together, so they won't see a hair out of place. If you have a little cash on you, or a lot of cash (for this part of town) you can buy something refreshing au zinc, standing at a café counter. I had time for that this morning -- five whole minutes -- and there's a super short clip up of the cute place I ducked into for a bitter slurp of the forever-undrinkable, foul-tasting coffee they serve in France. Ha ha! Don't even THINK about ordering tea here! If you don't drink alcohol and have a discrimating palate, you might just go thirsty in this fine Republic.
