The Nerobergbahn is a funicular railway in the city of Wiesbaden, Germany. The line links the city with the Neroberg hill to its north, where visitors may view a panorama of the city. The line opened in 1888, and is one of the few funiculars with water propulsion. At the upper station, tanks on the downbound car are filled with up to 7,000 litres (1,500 imp gal; 1,800 US gal) of water to ensure that it is heavier than the upbound car.
The downbound car then pulls the upbound car uphill with a 452-metre (1,483 ft) long steel cable. When the downbound carriage arrives at the lower station, the water is discharged and pumped uphill.
In 1939, it was planned to convert the line to electric propulsion and to provide larger cars, but the outbreak of World War II prevented this. The line was taken out of service in 1944 due to war damage, and service was restarted in 1948. In 1988 the line was protected as a technical monument by the State of Hesse.

Die Nerobergbahn in der hessischen Landeshauptstadt Wiesbaden wurde 1888 eröffnet und ist als Wasserlast- und Zahnstangen-Standseilbahn einmalig in Deutschland. Auf einer Gesamtlänge von 438 Metern verbindet sie das Nerotal mit dem Neroberg - dem Wiesbadener Hausberg. Es werden insgesamt 83 Höhenmeter überwunden, die maximale Steigung beträgt 19 %.
Gleich oberhalb der Talstation überwindet die Bahn das erhalten gebliebene Nerotalviadukt mit seinen fünf Bögen - bis heute das Wahrzeichen der Bahn.
Grundsätzlich sind beide Wagen durch ein Stahlseil mit Umlenkrolle miteinander gekoppelt. Der talwärts fahrende Wagen muss dabei eine höhere Masse als der bergwärts fahrende Wagen aufweisen, um diesen hinaufzuziehen.
Hierfür wird ein Wassertank des jeweils an der Bergstation stehenden Wagen mit bis zu 7.000 Litern Wasser gefüllt. Das Wasser wird bei der Ankunft in der Talstation schließlich wieder abgelassen und nach oben gepumpt. Wieviel Wasser letztlich eingelassen wird ist stets auch abhängig vom Verhältnis der Fahrgastnachfrage aufwärts und abwärts.
Bei einem vollbesetzten Wagen in Talrichtung und einem annähernd leeren Wagen in Bergrichtung - eine Situation, die gegen Abend häufiger zu beobachten ist - reicht bereits eine kleine Menge an Wasser, um den erforderlichen Gewichtsunterschied zu ermöglichen. Ist die eingefüllte Wassermenge jedoch zu klein gewesen, kann es auch dazu kommen, dass die Wagen auf freier Strecke stehen bleiben.
Die Fahrt beginnt letztlich mit dem Lösen der Handbremse. Es wird eine Geschwindigkeit von rund 6 bis 7 km/h erreicht. Anstelle einer für Standseilbahnen klassischen Ausführung des Fahrwegs mit der abtsche Ausweiche bestehen die Gleise aus drei Laufschienen, wobei die mittlere von beiden Wagen genutzt wird, die äußeren nur von jeweils einem. Die Zahnstange dient zusätzlich zur Regulierung der Geschwindigkeit.
Ursprünglich hätte die Nerobergbahn - ähnlich wie auch die Turmbergbahn in Karlsruhe - auf elektrischen Betrieb umgestellt werden soll. Der Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs verhinderte das Vorhaben jedoch und das Prinzip der Wasserballastbahn blieb erhalten.
Zu erreichen ist die Nerobergbahn mit der Buslinie 1, mit welcher eine Direktverbindung zur Innenstadt und zum Hauptbahnhof besteht. Die einst am Nerotal endende Wiesbadener Straßenbahn wurde in den 1950er Jahren stillgelegt.
Unweit der Talstation befindet sich seit 2000 auch ein kleines Museum zur Bahn und ihrer Geschichte, in welchem auch ein detailliertes Modell eines Wagens betrachtet werden kann.
Die Nerobergbahn fährt zwischen April und Oktober, im Winter ruht der Betrieb.

The Nerobergbahn in the Hessian state capital Wiesbaden opened in 1888 and is unique in Germany as a water and rack railway funicular. On a total length of 438 meters, it connects the Nerotal with the Neroberg. It climbs a total of 83 meters of altitude, the maximum slope is 19%.
Basically, both cars are connected through a steel cable. The car downwards traveling car must have a higher mass than the car uphill traveling car in order to pull it up.

The ride begins with the release of the handbrake. A speed of about 6 to 7 km / h is reached. The tracks consist of three rails which expand to four rails in the passing loop, so there is no need for any switches. The rack also serves to regulate the speed.
Originally, the Nerobergbahn should have been converted to electrical operation. However, due to the outbreak of the Second World War the project was cancelled and the old water ballast railway remained in its original state.
The Nerobergbahn runs between April and October, there is no service in winter as the passenger demand is too low.

The Turmbergbahn is a funicular railway that connects the district of Durlach with the Turmberg. The train scales 100 metres in height over a stretch of 315 metres at a maximum incline of 36.2%. It first opened for operation in 1888, and is thus the second oldest funicular railway in Karlsruhe Germany.
The Turmberg is a favourite destination for outings and can be reached by a number of routes. The Turmberg railway has been ascending the hill since 1888. The top of the hill can also be reached directly by climbing the 528 steps of the “Hexenstäffele”. Awaiting you at the summit is a wonderful view across the Rhine Plain over the rooftops of Durlach and Karlsruhe.

With a height of 245 m, the Neroberg is the local mountain of the Hessian state capital Wiesbaden . The popular recreation area is located on the northern outskirts of the Taunushöhen. The name Neroberg is probably derived from the already mentioned in the 13th century Nersberg (= rear mountain). From Neresberg, Nerosberg finally became the name Neroberg.
For viticulture - Count Philipp of Nassau-Weilburg left in 1525 the vineyard on Neroberg invest. In 1900 the vineyard became the property of the city of Wiesbaden. The vineyard domain Rauenthal manages today the vineyard. Incidentally, Kaiser Wilhelm was given a bottle of Neroberger at the inauguration of the Wiesbadener Kurhaus. The most expensive bottle of the situation, a Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from 1893, was auctioned in 1986 for as much as 35,000 DM.

The Nerobergbahn is a funicular railway to climb Neroberg hill, which is in the north of the city of Wiesbaden, Germany. This incline is very interesting because it moves using weight of water. A pair of cars which are connected with wires on rails, have 7,000 litres water tank. At the station on the hill, the tank of downbound car is filled with water, to pull up lighter upbound car.

Die historische Nerobergbahn in Wiesbaden feierte im September 2018 ihr 130-jähriges Jubiläum! Seit 1888 verkehrt die mit Wasserballast betriebene Drahtseil-Zahnstangenbahn zwischen dem Nerotal und dem Neroberg. Sie ist damit die älteste Bahn dieser Art in Deutschland und die zweitälteste in Europa. Von der 245 Meter hoch gelegenen Bergstation fährt der bergab fahrende Wagen mit einer Betriebsgeschwindigkeit von 7,3 km/h über 438 Meter Streckenlänge Richtung Talstation. Mit dem Wasserballast dieses Wagens von bis zu 7.000 Litern wird der von der Talstation aus entgegenkommende Wagen über ein Stahlseil bergauf gezogen. Die Bahn wird jährlich von Karfreitag bis Anfang November betrieben. (Wiesbaden, 25.03.2018)

The Heidelberg Mountain Railway (German: Heidelberger Bergbahn) is a two-section funicular railway in the city of Heidelberg, Germany. The first section runs from a lower station at Kornmarkt in Heidelberg's Altstadt, via an intermediate station at Heidelberg Castle, to an upper station at Molkenkur. Here passengers may change to the second section, which runs up the Königstuhl, a nearby mountain with good views over the city and the River Neckar.
The upper and lower sections of the funicular have different histories and are sometimes referred to separately by the names Königstuhlbahn and Molkenkurbahn respectively. These two sections present quite different appearances, with the upper section using wooden bodied cars of historic appearance, whilst the lower section uses modern style cars. Similarly the upper stations at Molkenkur and Königstuhl are to the original design, whilst those further down the hill at Kornmakt and Heidelberg Castle present a more modern image.
The Heidelberger Bergbahn is operated by the Heidelberger Straßen- und Bergbahn AG (HSB), the operator of buses and trams in Heidelberg. The funicular predominantly serves tourist traffic. The lower section runs every ten minutes throughout the day, whilst the connecting upper section runs every twenty minutes throughout the day. The services start at 9 a.m. and end at times that vary from summer to winter.
The lower section of the funicular (the Molkenkurbahn) opened in 1890, and its original form used the water ballast system of propulsion, similar to that still used by the Nerobergbahn in Wiesbaden. The line was rebuilt to use a conventional electric drive in 1907. Between 1961 and 1962 the section was rebuilt and new cars provided in order to handle the volume of traffic to Heidelberg Castle; at this time new stations were built at Kornmarkt and Heidelberg Castle. The section was closed between October 2003 and March 2005; during the closure period the existing cars were scrapped and replaced by new and larger cars to a modern design, and Kornmarkt and Heidelberg Castle stations were again rebuilt.
The upper section of the funicular (the Königstuhlbahn) opened in 1907, and used a conventional electric drive from the start. It continued to run in its original form until April 2003, when changes to safety regulations forced it to shut down. The section reopened in March 2005; during the closure period the existing cars were rebuilt and provided with new wooden bodies to the original design.
