The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (金沢21世紀美術館 Kanazawa Nijūisseiki Bijutsukan) is a museum of contemporary art located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Japan. The museum was designed by Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of the architectural office SANAA in 2004. In October 2005, one year after its opening the Museum marked 1,570,000 visitors.
Kanazawa (金沢市 Kanazawa-shi) is a city located in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. As of 1 January 2018, the city had an estimated population of 466,029 in 203,271 households, and a population density of 990 persons per km². The total area of the city was 468.64 square kilometres (180.94 sq mi). It is the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture.

An absolutely brilliant building by SANAA. Simple and complex at the same time. Look for the columns in the video! How do they get them this thin? Search for AC units in the ceiling? There aren't any, they are hidden in the floor! Check the sprinkles in the ceiling, all perfectly within the ceiling grid! The architecture does not disappoint.
However, we might question whether we have enough Contemporary artists to fill these ever increasing provincial museums of contemporary art?
Anish Kapoor? Check,
Olafur Eliasson? Check,
Damien Hirst? Check,
Kusama Yayoi? Check,
James Turrell? Check!
All works by well-known modern artists that the globe trotting tourists will recognise from visits to all those other museums of modern art that keep popping up around the world.
In addition, as the building was funded by the local municipality thus more than half of the museum has handed over to local talent.
Rooms are filled with sunset photography, ceramics and a lot of jolly oil paintings.
Presented in very close proximity of each other there is a collection that includes at least three van Goghian flower painting, a couple of Jackson Pollock exercises in paint dripping. Another old favourite are paintings in oil or acrylic of family friendly nudes. There are also quite a few paintings of a broadly smiling next door farmer is holding painted cabbages.
In the photography department at least 50% feature sunsets.
As this is Japan al these works are executed to the very high technical level imaginable which should be appreciated by even the most critical critic.
And although it's definitely contemporary, the question remains whether it is art?

The Swimming Pool by Leandro Elrich at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art Kanazawa (金沢21世紀美術館)
This pool is located at 1-2-1 Hirosaka, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa, Japan
When viewed from the deck, the pool appears to be filled with deep, shimmering water. In fact, however, a layer of water only some 10 cm deep is suspended over transparent glass. Below the glass is an empty space with aquamarine walls that viewers can enter.
How to get there:
- Take a bus from Kanazawa Station (East Exit) to Hirosaka bus stop (10 minutes, 200 yen), from where it is a few steps to the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art. Among the buses are also 1-3 JR buses per hour which are covered by the Japan Rail Pass.
- Alternatively, Hirosaka bus stop is also served by the Kenrokuen Shuttle Bus (stop number S5 and S9), the Kanazawa Loop Bus (stop numbers RL9 and LL8) and the Machi Bus in about 20 minutes from Kanazawa Station.

Kanazawa’s 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art: Welcoming Visitors with an Open Design
The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa,which opened its doors to the public in 2004, is located in the heart of the city, near the famous Kenrokuen garden. It was designed by Sejima Kazuyo and Nishizawa Ryūe of the architectural studio SANAA, winners of the Pritzker Prize, the “Nobel prize of architecture.” Aiming to create a museum that would be open to the city like a park, they designed a large circular building surrounded by a glass wall. It does not have a main entrance; instead it welcomes visitors through four entry points at intervals around the exterior.
The museum’s collection, consisting primarily of contemporary art, includes a number of works that are integrated with the edifice, such as Leandro Erlich’s Swimming Pool. The museum also plans its own special exhibitions and organizes events to promote public participation. It attracts more than 2 million visitors a year.

The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa is a museum of contemporary art located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Japan.
The museum was designed by Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of the architectural office SANAA in 2004. In October 2005, one year after its opening the Museum marked 1,570,000 visitors
The Museum is located in the center of Kanazawa, near Kenroku-en garden and the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art. The building has a circular form, with a diameter of 112.5 metres. This shape aims to keep the appearance of the overall building volume low, to mitigate the scale of the project and allows access from multiple points of entry. The transparency of the building further manifests the wish to avoid the museum being perceived as a large, introverted mass.
The building includes community gathering spaces, such as a library, lecture hall, and children’s workshop, located on the periphery, and museum spaces in the middle. The exhibition areas comprise numerous galleries with multiple options for division, expansion, or concentration. The galleries are of various proportions and light conditions – from bright daylight through glass ceilings to spaces with no natural light source, their height ranging from 4 to 12 metres. The circulation spaces are designed to make them usable as additional exhibition areas. Four fully glazed internal courtyards, each unique in character, provide ample daylight to the center of the building and a fluent border between community spaces and museum spaces.
金沢21世紀美術館（かなざわにじゅういちせいきびじゅつかん）は、石川県金沢市広坂にある現代美術を収蔵した美術館。愛称はまるびぃ（由来は「丸い美術館」）であるが、一般的には「21美（にじゅういちび）」と呼ばれることが多い。
もと金沢大学附属中学校・小学校・幼稚園があった場所に、2004年10月9日に開館した。観光客の多く立ち寄る兼六園の真弓坂口の斜め向かいに当たり、金沢城を復元中の金沢城公園の入口からも近い。繁華街の香林坊や片町からも徒歩圏内にある、市の中心部に立地した都心型の美術館。周囲には金沢能楽美術館、石川近代文学館、石川県立美術館、石川県立歴史博物館などテーマの異なる芸術関連施設があり、文化ゾーンを形成している。
建築
建物は地上1階、地下1階建て。芝生の敷地中央にあり、円形（直径112.5m）総ガラス張りで正面といえる面がなく、逆に言えばすべてが正面といえる。兼六園方面、香林坊方面、柿木畠方面などの方向からも入場できる上に、無料入場できる範囲を広く取っており、多数の作品を無料で鑑賞することができる（有料エリアは中央の正方形状の部分であり、入口は兼六園側になっている）。
各展示室は現代美術の展示に適した白い壁面の空間（ホワイトキューブ）であり、個々の展示室はそれぞれ独立した立方体として円形の館内に配置されている。このため一応展覧会ごとに順路は決められているものの、鑑賞者はどれでも好きな展示室からランダムに見ていくことが可能であるとされている。 建築設計競技で選ばれた設計者の妹島和世と西沢立衛(SANAA)は、開館後に実際に展示を行う学芸員より、世界中の美術館の展示室をモデルに正方形や長方形、円形などさまざまなタイプの理想的な展示室の提案を受けた。それらの展示室を集落のようにおのおの独立させて配置し、天井と円形のガラスの外壁とで覆っている。
外壁同様各所にガラスが多用されているため、館内の見通しが非常に利く。中央の有料エリアからも建物外部の公園や道路を見ることが出来るため、開放的である。無料エリアの1階と地下1階には市民ギャラリーがあり、市内の芸術団体や学校の展覧会、新聞社主催の展覧会などに貸し出されている。また地下1階には劇場や来館者用駐車場、作品搬入口や収蔵庫など美術館の裏方となるスペースが広がっている。
設計者のSANAAは、この建物等によりヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレ第9回国際建築展の最高賞である金獅子賞を受賞している。
