Coronavirus: Death toll from China virus outbreak passes 100 - BBC News
The death toll from the new coronavirus now stands at 106, with the number of infections almost doubling in a day to more than 4,500.
The rise comes as governments scramble to control the spread of the virus. Hong Kong is going to slash cross-border travel with mainland China.
Meanwhile, Japan is sending a plane to Wuhan, the epicentre of the outbreak, to evacuate its citizens
The virus has spread across China and to at least 16 countries globally.
Hong Kong has announced plans to slash cross-border travel between the city and mainland China as the new coronavirus continues to spread.
More than 100 people have now died in China, with confirmed infections surging to more than 4,500.
High-speed trains and ferries that cross the border will be suspended from Thursday, Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam announced. She wore a face mask.
The virus has spread across China and to at least 16 countries globally.
Several foreign governments with large numbers of citizens in Wuhan, the epicentre of the outbreak, are considering evacuations. Japan is sending a plane later on Tuesday.
Wuhan, as well as the wider Hubei province, are already effectively in a lockdown with strict transport restrictions in and out of the area. Wearing masks in public is now mandatory in some Chinese cities.

HAPPENING: FASTEST HANDS IN THE EAST II
This time last year we packed a room full of bartenders, barflies and confused first timers into 28 Hongkong St and held an awesome little speed competition called Fastest Hands in the East just for shits and giggles. Cocktails were made, shots were poured, glass was broken and fried rice was served.
This year, 28 Hongkong Street hosted a second installment on the closing night of #SGCF2017. Watch as clans of 3-4 speed warriors battle it out for the title of Fastest Hands in the East 2017!

Highlights Comparing ‘Asian Giants’: Singapore and Hong Kong Students’ Academic Achievement
28 September 2017
The HEAD Foundation
Singapore
Asian students’ success in international assessments is now so well acknowledged, yet understanding the reasons behind that success, especially in comparative perspective, has received less attention. Singapore and Hong Kong are ideal cases for comparison because in some ways they exhibit similarities (histories, cultures, economic development) but in other ways they are different (political structures, diversity and regional integration).
On 28 September 2017, Professor Kerry Kennedy, Advisor (Academic Development) and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Citizenship and Governance, The Education University of Hong Kong, examined the factors that have influenced the academic achievements of Singapore and Hong Kong. He also highlighted how the PISA 2015 results point to a broader research agenda that is needed to understand complex issues related to learning and achievement in Asian contexts.
About The HEAD Foundation
The HEAD Foundation (THF) is a Singapore-based think tank devoted to the research, policy influence, and effective implementation of education for development in Asia. Established as an International Charitable Organization in 2013, we aim to advance the study and understanding of education – particularly in the Asian context – and its implications for governments, businesses and civil society in the region. In addition to our work in research, policy influence and advocacy, the Foundation also aims to apply the knowledge for more effective practice and policy implementation through programmes and projects.
