Reichstag Building in Berlin, Home of the German Parliament
The Reichstag building is a historical edifice in Berlin, Germany, constructed to house the Imperial Diet, of the German Empire. This imposing building houses the Federal German Parliament or Bundestag and was originally completed in 1894 to meet the need of the newly-unified German Empire of the Kaisers' for a larger parliamentary building. The Reichstag was intended to resemble a Renaissance palace, and its architect, Paul Wallot, dedicated the building to the German people.
The Nazi leader Adolf Hitler exploited the fire which gutted the Reichstag building in 1933 by blaming the Communists for the arson and for attempted revolution. There is good evidence to suggest, however, that his followers were actually responsible and that this was a manufactured crisis. When German reunification became a reality, the new republic was proclaimed here at midnight on the 2nd October 1990.
The Reichstag has undergone considerable restoration and alteration. The building is now the second most visited attraction in Germany (after the Cologne Cathedral), not least because the addition of a spectacular glass dome designed by the British architect Norman Foster. The large glass dome at the very top of the Reichstag has a 360-degree view of the surrounding Berlin cityscape. The main hall of the parliament below can also be seen from inside the dome, and natural light from above radiates down to the parliament floor.
The Reichstag building is well known in the art world thanks to Paris-based Bulgarian artist Christo's mammoth 'Wrapped Reichstag' project in 1995. The entire building was swathed in silver cloth for two weeks that summer. You can visit the dome for free but you will need to register online in advance in order to do so.

Bauhaus to tiny haus: micro-home village in Modernist Berlin
When it was created in 1919, the Bauhaus aimed to be a School of Building, exploring dwellings, life & art: Berlin's Bauhaus Archive continues in this spirit with events like the Tinyhouse University.
Renowned for his one-square-meter house, German architect Van Bo Le-Mentzel continued his tiny house experimentation by launching a utopian village on the grounds of Berlin’s Bauhaus Archive. With permission from the design museum to utilize temporarily their garden, residents can park, and live in, homes here no bigger than 10 square meters, as long as they provide a bed for “a person in need” (e.g. refugees, homeless).
The “Tinyhouse University” is both a design/build school and a hands-on living experiment, including Le-Mentzel’s 100-euro-house, Cafe Basic Income, Leonardo Di Chiara’s transforming Avoid, Jan Korbes converted silo shelter, “swap body” housing (Retreat which fits on standard freight container system) the Holy Foods House (with attached tiny garden and open-source showerloop providing an “infinite shower”).

✚ Watch my Cold War-Era PLAYLIST:
This film (originally titled as ‘Journey Across Berlin’) is a 1961 documentary produced by the United States Information Agency (USIA) about the capital city of Germany, Berlin after World War 2. It documents the West's position on defense of Berlin against the Soviets. Beginning with the destruction and economic breakdown of the city at end of the war, the film presents significant historical events from an American perspective, such as establishment of occupation zones, Berlin blockade and airlift in 1948–49, uprising of 1953 in East Germany, elections in free Berlin and the West's determined actions to maintain the freedom of West Berlin. The film was completed a few months before the construction of the Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer), a barrier that divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
As World War 2 came to an end in 1945, a pair of Allied peace conferences at Yalta and Potsdam determined the fate of Germany’s territories. They split the defeated nation into four “allied occupation zones”: The eastern part of the country went to the Soviet Union, while the western part went to the United States, Great Britain and France.
Even though Berlin was located entirely within the Soviet part of the country, the Yalta and Potsdam agreements split the city into similar sectors. The Soviets took the eastern half, while the other Allies took the western. This four-way occupation of Berlin began in June 1945.
Blockade and crisis:
The existence of West Berlin, a conspicuously capitalist city deep within communist East Germany, “stuck like a bone in the Soviet throat,” as Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev put it. The Russians began maneuvering to drive the United States, Britain and France out of the city for good. In 1948, a Soviet blockade of West Berlin aimed to starve the western Allies out of the city. Instead of retreating, however, the United States and its allies supplied their sectors of the city from the air. This effort, known as the Berlin Airlift, lasted for more than a year and delivered more than 2.3 million tons of food, fuel and other goods to West Berlin. The Soviets called off the blockade in 1949.
After a decade of relative calm, tensions flared again in 1958. For the next three years, the Soviets – emboldened by the successful launch of the Sputnik satellite the year before and embarrassed by the seemingly endless flow of refugees from east to west (nearly 3 million since the end of the blockade, many of them young skilled workers such as doctors, teachers and engineers) – blustered and made threats, while the Allies resisted. Summits, conferences and other negotiations came and went without resolution. Meanwhile, the flood of refugees continued. In June 1961, some 19,000 people left the East Germany through Berlin. The following month, 30,000 fled. In the first 11 days of August, 16,000 East Germans crossed the border into West Berlin, and on August 12 some 2,400 followed – the largest number of defectors ever to leave East Germany in a single day.
The Berlin Wall:
That night, Premier Khrushchev gave the East German government permission to stop the flow of emigrants by closing its border for good. In just two weeks, the East German army, police force and volunteer construction workers had completed a makeshift barbed wire and concrete block wall – the Berlin Wall – that divided one side of the city from the other.
Before the wall was built, Berliners on both sides of the city could move around fairly freely: They crossed the East-West border to work, to shop, to go to the theater and the movies. Trains and subway lines carried passengers back and forth. After the wall was built, it became impossible to get from East to West Berlin except through one of three checkpoints: at Helmstedt (“Checkpoint Alpha” in American military parlance), at Dreilinden (“Checkpoint Bravo”) and in the center of Berlin at Friedrichstrasse (“Checkpoint Charlie”). At each of the checkpoints, East German soldiers screened diplomats and other officials before they were allowed to enter or leave. Except under special circumstances, travelers from East and West Berlin were rarely allowed across the border.

Renting in Berlin: How to Find an Apartment | Life in Berlin
I wanted to share my tips on renting in Berlin, how to find an apartment in Berlin. Ep 28⬇See more below⬇
Apartment hunting can be a hassle, especially if you are moving to Berlin from abroad. Finding an apartment in Berlin is still similar to finding an apartment elsewhere.
First, it's good to consider when to start looking for an apartment. Second, the location, where to live in Berlin, determines a lot how you feel about life in Berlin. Thirdly, you want to calculate your budget for renting an apartment. Price level in Berlin is rather low, but the rents are increasing fast. Fourth, the size of the apartment affects the price but then again, it is convenient to have two bedrooms if you have many friends and family visiting you often. Finally, I don't think you will need an agent for finding an apartment, but instead you can search online. I link couple of websites below I have heard people are using.
I used Airbnb Berlin for renting an apartment in Berlin. Berlin Airbnb is a good option if you need a furnished apartment and you are staying in Berlin only for a couple of months.

THE BIG PICTURE U.S. ARMY IN EUROPE 1955 2ND ARMORED DIVISION BERLIN GERMANY 14044
In this 1955 episode (TV-326) of the television series The Big Picture, viewers get a glimpse of life in West Germany for the 7th Army’s 2nd Armored Division. Sgt. Stewart Queen speaks to camera about U.S. Army strength in Europe. Army men walk off a ship in Europe and load into transport trucks. There are several shots of central Germany’s cities, severely damaged from the fighting during World War II (02:22). A quick montage of footage of German industries shows the effectiveness of the Marshall Plan. Viewers see West Germany’s Parliament, but they also see people walking past still-ruined buildings, and refugees from East Germany pulling carts as they are allowed into West Germany. Men load supplies during the Berlin airlift. Soviet tanks and troops participate in a military parade. A Soviet crew operate a submarine (04:54). Two men from the 7th Army arrive in Bad Kreuznach and get into a jeep for the headquarters of the 2nd Armored Division. The Privates get their gear at headquarters (05:50), then are taken to their tanks. Men work on the tanks, and one soldier cleans his .45 handgun. The film shows an apartment in a military housing building, women shopping at the Quartermaster’s store on the base (08:07), and a German bride preparing to wed an American soldier. Several soldiers go sight-seeing throughout Germany and take in famous buildings and hamlets. People celebrate a festival in the streets (09:55). The episode shows several men walking through an art museum, the Crag Church (Felsenkirche) at Idar-Oberstein (10:27), and U.S. servicemen playing classical German music for an audience (11:14). An Army baseball team competes against a German team (12:15), and some Americans relax at an Army retreat in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (12:36). Men of the 2nd Armored Division prepare their tank for a training maneuver (13:35). The division leaves the base, and the tanks roll through a German town where young kids wave. Army trucks haul massive 280-mm guns to the maneuver zone (15:38). Honest John rockets are towed to zone as well. The troops arrive in the field for the maneuver training and set up camp (16:38). The exercise begins with the launch of an Honest John rocket, simulating an atomic and conventional warfare scenario. Men load a shell into the 280-mm gun and fire. Tanks move into position, and regular artillery guns are fired at the ruins of the abandoned town of Schwaneberg. Personnel carriers drop off infantry (21:35), and the men follow the tanks into the town (22:36). Soldiers fire machine guns and climb over the rubble of the town. Soldiers sweep through capture the “enemy” soldiers (24:47). Men sit for a debriefing of the maneuver. Then the division moves their tanks into a river to clean the machines. The episode closes with Sgt. Stewart Queen speaking to camera.

Moving To Berlin, Germany as a Canadian - How I did it
As many of you know, I recently moved to Berlin, Germany from Toronto, Canada and have been getting many questions about the whole process with getting a visa and how to go about it. So I decided making this video sharing advice and giving the information I was looking for when I was researching.
I am here on a Youth Mobility Visa (Canadian Working Holiday Visa), which allows residence and paid work in Germany and is valid for a year. I applied in person in Berlin, the process for applying from your home country is a little different.
More information here:
The most difficult part in the process was getting the Anmeldung (registration of address), because in order to get a place to live you need to show income, and to have an income you need a job, for which you need a visa... It’s a cycle that makes it difficult for many but I share some tips on how to go about it.
I was nervous when moving here, especially living in a country I don’t speak the language of, but of course Lilian has been very helpful and supportive. It’s fairly easy to get by with English, however I would recommend everyone to take German classes and make an effort to learn the language, even if just a little.
Berlin is an exciting city, it can be intimidating and stressful, but so far my experience has mostly been very positive and I haven’t felt homesick at all yet.
I will keep you guys posted on how it all continues - thanks so much for your interest and support!
Lots of Love,
Alexis

Our Berlin Apartment Tour!
Here it is: our APARTMENT TOUR! We recently moved to Neukölln, Berlin and found a place we can finally make our own! If only it wasn't for those damn sculptures...
In what feels like a not quite as exciting MTV Cribs knockoff we give you a little tour around our place and share some insights into how we live here. It feels amazing to be living without roommates and finally in a place to call our own!
We still have a few things we want to add but so far we're really liking it and have made it our little safe haven in Berlin. We actually got the place through one of Lilian's mom's connections, and was the first long-term place we looked at in Berlin so we were very lucky.
We hope you enjoyed taking a look around with us!
Thanks for watching :)
