Luminaries Documentary, WEDU - Richard Gonzmart of Columbia Restaurant Group
Praised by Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn for a heart as big as Florida,” Richard Gonzmart became one of the first three Luminaries in a new program in May 2015 from The Junior League of Tampa and WEDU Public Media.
I'm just carrying a torch and letting it burn brightly before I pass it on to the next generation, Gonzmart said of his role as the fourth generation president of the 110-year-old Columbia Restaurant Group. The other two honorees are Sister Claire LeBoeuf and former Florida Gov. Bob Martinez.
Enjoy this documentary clip from WEDU featuring Richard Gonzmart.
The Columbia Restaurant Group consists of four concepts including Columbia, Ulele, Cha Cha Coconuts and Goody Goody. The Columbia was founded in 1905 and is Florida’s Oldest RestaurantSM. Locations include the flagship restaurant in Tampa’s Historic Ybor City, additional locations include St. Armands Circle in Sarasota, the Historic District in St. Augustine, Sand Key on Clearwater Beach, Central Florida''s town of Celebration, the Columbia Cafe on the Riverwalk in Tampa and the Columbia Restaurant Cafe at Tampa International Airport. All Columbia locations are owned and operated by 4th and 5th generation members of the founding family; except for Columbia Restaurant Cafe at Tampa International Airport, which is operated in partnership with HMSHost. Cha Cha Coconuts is a tropical bar and grill that opened in 1989 on St. Armands Circle in Sarasota. Ulele opened to rave reviews in 2014 on the Hillsborough River in Tampa Heights.
In Oct. 2014, Richard Gonzmart announced that he had purchased the rights to the Goody Goody brand. A Tampa landmark since 1925 and closed for 10 years, the iconic Goody Goody restaurant will be reborn in 2015 under Gonzmart’s direction in Tampa’s Hyde Park Village. A date for the opening will be announced in the coming months.

STORYLINE:
Thousands of protesters marched through Moscow on Sunday, a few throwing placards of President Vladimir Putin and some of their lawmakers into a rubbish tip in disgust over Russia's new law banning Americans from adopting Russian children.
The far bigger number of protesters than expected was a sign that outrage over the ban has breathed some life into the dispirited anti-Kremlin opposition movement.
Shouting shame on the scum, protesters carried posters of Putin and members of Russia's parliament who overwhelmingly voted for the law last month.
Up to 20,000 took part in the demonstration on a cold, grey afternoon.
The march was led by many of the same opposition figures who led the protest rallies that drew more than 100,000 people a year ago to demand free elections and an end to Putin's 12 years in power.
Since Putin began a third presidential term in May, the protests have flagged as the opposition leaders have struggled to find direction and capitalise on the wider discontent.
Russia's adoption ban is thought in many circles to be retaliation for a new U.S. law targeting Russians accused of human rights abuses.
Over one thousand protesters also rallied in Saint Petersburg where one poster said Don't use children for political game-playing!
This law is not constitutional, it contradicts human laws as well as general laws. Obviously, this is the private revenge of a person whose name we all know, said local resident Yelen Efros, appearing to refer to Putin.
The ban also addresses long-brewing resentment in Russia over the 60,000 Russian children who have been adopted by Americans in the past two decades, 19 of whom have died.

Tony Jannus: American Aviator :30 Promo
A group of St. Petersburg College video production students have teamed up with local PBS affiliate WEDU to produce and air a 30-minute television documentary about the man credited with pioneering the commercial aviation industry.
The program, Tony Jannus: American Aviator, will air Thursday, July 15 at 8:30 p.m. on WEDU. It shows how the trillion dollar commercial aviation industry started from the purchase of one ticket for a flight on the St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line airplane piloted by Tony Jannus.
I hope that the audience gets a sense of what a daring and intelligent person it took to be a pilot in those early days, and how St. Petersburg is really the birthplace of scheduled passenger airline service, said Executive Producer Michael Johnson. It's a huge benefit to the local community. Knowing our own history and where we fit in the world—it's a sense of pride and of belonging.
The documentary explores five themes: Aviation firsts, Jannus the pilot, St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line, Tony Jannus' legacy & Today and tomorrow.
We are, as an organization, committed to providing local content to the communities that we serve and reach 16 counties in Central Florida through our public television station, said Jack Conely, Vice President of Content for WEDU, West Central Florida's primary PBS television station. This sort of content is relevant locally, and we feel like we're providing an opportunity to the students here in the media arts program to provide them with a real world type experience and give them something that they can have for their resume going forward.
Besides the July 15 airing of the documentary, an encore showing is planned for July 18 at 2:30 p.m. The program also will be available online at wedu.org.
About St. Petersburg College:
In 1927, St. Petersburg College (then known as St. Petersburg Junior College) became Florida's first private, non-profit, two-year school of higher learning located in downtown St. Petersburg. Full accreditation followed in 1931 and in 1948 SPC became a public college.
In June 2001, SPJC officially became St. Petersburg College when Florida's governor signed legislation making it the first community college in Florida to offer four-year degrees. On Dec. 11, 2001, the college received the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools' accreditation to offer courses leading to bachelor's degrees.
In 2002, St. Petersburg College began offering courses leading to bachelor's degrees in Education, Nursing and Technology Management. The college's commitment to its two-year curriculum, which has earned it wide recognition and annually wins it high national rankings, remains as strong as ever.
Today, SPC has eight learning sites throughout Pinellas County and recently became the first college in Florida to offer a four-year degree in Dental Hygiene. This program's offerings augment its two-year program, which has been in operation since 1963. SPC added four-year degrees in Veterinary Technology, Public Safety Administration and Orthotics and Prosthetics in 2005.
