2017 Vermont U14 (Bantam) State Championship Stowe v. Burlington
Members of the Stowe U14 team are Ethan Brown, Kyle Rahilly, Bria Dill, Rowan Keller, Andrew McDermott, Atticus Eiden, Jackson Graham, Henry Paumgarten, J.P. Daliere, Cam Anderson, Jack Hickey, Nick Daliere, Adrian Bryan and Tristan Love. Micke Hickey and Pat Rahilly share the head coaching duties; Brett Loomis is assistant coach and Nathan Libby is team manager.
The Stowe Raider U-14 team took to the ice for the last time in the regular season for the Vermont Amateur State Hockey Association championship game at Stowe Arena last weekend.
Stowe faced a familiar foe — the Burlington Bobcats. The teams played five times during the season, and Stowe won four.
But the pre-game jitters were complicated because no one knew which Bobcat team was going to show up: A. the one that killed the Raiders 6-0 to start the season? Or, B. the one that impaled itself on senseless penalties and lost the next four?
It looked like Option A from the get-go, and Stowe was just there to watch.
Down 1-0 after just a few minutes, Stowe wasn’t giving the packed arena much to cheer for in the first period other than a couple of missed scoring opportunities. Mercifully, with a second to go, a Bobcat clanked one off both pipes — but not in — as the buzzer sounded.
The home team skated to the bench to check its pulse. The perplexed people in the crowd murmured and pulled out their Stowe Reporters to reread the sports pages about the exciting hometown U-14 team, then headed for the restroom and the coveted snack shack.
The second period started much the same. The hometown heroes weren’t protecting goalie Ethan Brown and the uncaged Cats pushed him further and further into his own cage. Inevitably, a nice tip-in off a Bobcat defender’s slap shot from the point made it 2-0 just minutes into the second period.
The road ahead looked rough halfway through the game and Burlington had effectively taken Stowe’s home ice advantage out of play.
Then, at the eight-minute mark of the second period, Brown made a rudimentary save — then kick-passed an assist off his stick to quick-thinking Henry Paumgarten breaking out from the right hashmark. He banked a pass off the boards to a streaking Rowan Keller at the red line, who beat the chasing defenders for a breakaway goal. He snuck it in the right side as he was hooked down to make it 2-1.
One would have thought, “OK, game on,” but the Raiders went back into cruise mode and couldn’t muster any offense despite getting some chances against a solid Burlington goaltender.
All team members, offense and defense, were equally frustrated as they kept looking at “the other guy” to lend Brown a hand.
The third period started with the “big unit,” Cam Anderson, shoveling a pass up to the young wizard Paumgarten, who had suddenly found his extra gear. Seeing net all the way, he darted into close range for a shot that rebounded off the goaltender’s pads and right onto the waiting stick of Keller, who patiently deked the goalie right before tucking the puck in left. The score was now tied 2-2 only 30 seconds into the third period.
It was a new game.
Most importantly, the Raiders had pumped energy into a very supportive throng of fans. As the din grew, the Bobcats started getting off their game and looked cornered, as their usual array of penalties stalked them yet again.
With nine minutes left, Paumgarten started hunting. Taking the puck at mid-ice, he maneuvered inside the blue and did a spin-o-rama on the stunned defense for a perfect pass to Keller, who one-timed a slap shot into the net for the go-ahead 3-2 goal (and a natural hat trick).
The line bumped hands with their bench mates and circled right back to the lineup. Just six seconds later, the score would be 4-2. The ref dropped the puck at the center circle where Atticus Eiden’s draw smacked forward to Keller as he broke through the defense on a designed play.
His quick snap shot rebounded just short of the Bobcat goalie, but Paumgarten had followed to finish it off with a chip backhand shot.
That goal would become the eventual game-winner, as Burlington rapped one in with just a few seconds left in the game.
The Raiders qualified to play in the regional championships in Hooksett, N.H., March 24-26 against the best of their division in all of New England.

Michelle's Favorite Vermont Made Products
I wanted to do this video to showcase the best food products at least that I love that you can get while in VT. If you want to do a video that features the best things from your state I would love to watch it. Also if you agree with me on the products I featured let me know!
Ben & Jerry's:
Their ice cream cakes are amazing. Try the Vermonster hahahaha. Yeah right you'll puke. You can get this anywhere ice cream is sold usually in VT it's $3.49 a pint.
Lake Champlain Chocolates:
They sell ice cream and hot cocoa mix as well. Also they have specialty items like stuff made specifically for the holidays. If you go into the annex or store they have really great samples every day. The LCC in Burlington, VT has a tour you can take I think.
Vermont Beef Jerky Co. :
They have several flavors of beef jerky, spicy, sweet, and in between. You can find this at gas stations or VT product specialty stores like gift shops. The price ranges. I paid $3.59 for each pack but I have paid less when I go home to see my parents in Orleans and stop at a gas station there since it's where they make it. You can order it from the website. It's amazing!
Cabot:
I think these are the best dairy products you can get. When I travel I like to see if other states carry Cabot products and I always get a little happy when they do. They have award winning cheese and it's at reasonable prices. Plus when you go to the annex or factory you can get a tour and eat a bunch of free samples!
Maple Flavored Drops:
These are made with pure maple syrup! Yum. Made for the Butternut Mountain Farm in Morrisville, VT. I don't know where you can get these other than a VT product store or in specialty gift shops. I got mine in the Cabot/Lake Champlain Chocolates Annex in Waterbury, VT close to Stowe.
FTC: Important!!! I did not get paid by any company to feature or talk about their product. I wasn't paid or sponsored by anyone to make this video. All of the things I say are my own opinion. I just love these things and wanted to share it with everyone!

My name is Lola (Lost On Land Again). I am a van dweller in training and this is my story.
After exploring the Appalachian Trail in New Hampshire I headed to Vermont. I found a very quiet and beautiful campground called Smugglers Notch. Very pretty park. Very neat set up. Filmed late May, 2019.
