RCC - Year in review
This is a 3 minutes and 15 seconds slideshow with pictures of moments I believe defined this season, more or less in chronological order
Starting at the Mike Scott Rost with so many past and present paddlers and me—and so many funny stories, just the way Mike is!
The Dragon Boat Programs are a huge part of the club. The first regatta in the year was the Youth Dragon Boat Challenge with more than 20 high schools competing. For many of the students it was their first time competing on a boat! Glebe, with 11 RCC paddlers, were the champions this year.
The club hosted the Ontario Team and Canada Games trials. 4 midget RCC paddlers made the Ontario midget team and 3 made the Canada games team!
The next event was the Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival. The Rideau Canoe Club is an important partner of the Festival providing world class coaching, the course on Mooneys Bay and officials and safety boats.
Six RCC paddlers of Mexican descent went to Mexico invited by the Mexican Sports Commission and the Institutes for Mexicans Abroad to participate in the Mexico Olympics. They brought back 2 silver and 2 bronze medals!
The masters regatta was at the end of June with many RCC paddlers and from all over Ontario and Quebec. The 12K black rabbit race was very well received by more than 40 of the participants!
Our development and high performance paddlers had their first opportunity to race in the Canada Day Regatta which served as the framework to announce the funding of the 1.8 million dollars for the expansion of the club under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program! We are getting a new club house!
That weekend many of us drove down to Lake Placid, NY, to participate in the LPI Regatta, with heavy rain at times.
Gananoque was the next stop. Peewees, Bantams, Midgets and Up competed in their short course. Everyone had a good time, and it didnt rain!
Next Saturday and Sunday were at Carleton Place. Bantam program Saturday and Midget and up on Sunday.
Then the celebrations began. The Worlds Celebration to wish good luck to our 7 paddlers: Kristin, Emily, Tory, Ian, Ryan, Rhys and Angus, and to the Canadian, Swedish, Australian and Argentinean guests. They also participated in fun regattas and 4-square tournaments!
The No Talent Talent Show has become one of the most expected events of the summer. The athletes showed their talent acting as their coaches--, singing, playing instruments, and the coaches went digital and created an amazing video!
The Canoe Kids camp is another program that allows us to introduce around 300 kids to our sport, 10 weeks during the summer, 30 kids every week!
The newest program is the Paddle All program. It started with the right foot thanks to a grant from Telus that allowed to have boats and coaches. With the help of many volunteer athletes and volunteers it finished with Rideau being the club with the most participants at nationals!
From North Bay our athletes came back as the NBCC Regatta champions!
Then the qualifier regattas. The EOD Championships at Sydenham Lake for peewees and bantams qualifying for Trillium and the EOD Qualifiers for the midget and up qualifying for Nationals.
Immediately after that week many of us traveled to Dartmouth, NS to witness the Worlds Championships showing how the cheering team should be assembled. It was great to see all the athletes from all the countries competing at that level!
From Dartmouth to Sudbury for the Ontario Championships and the Trillium Championships. Rideau was 4th overall at Trilliums with great performances from all the paddlers!
As mentioned before three of our athletes qualified for the Ontarios Canada Games Team: Katie Findlay, Cheyanne Farqhuarson and Ben Tardioli. They were in PEI the week after and brought back several medals!
Then, Nationals and CanMas in Sherbrooke, QC. At CanMas on Sunday we were 3rd overall and Derek Mesereau was the Masters Men's Canoe and Kayak Award Recipient.
At Nationals we had great performances and results. 12 national champion crews, 27 athletes got a gold medal! The Senior Ladies were first and the Rideau Canoe Club was 3rd overall!
