Anna's Hummingbird Nest & Feeding Victoria BC (Mar 28-Apr 8, 2011)
Anna's Hummingbird nest in Victoria BC, filmed between March 28-April 8. This video shows feedings of a new chick over the first 10 days after hatching. WARNING - the first chick wouldn't feed and the mom removes it from the nest. This video shows it stuck on the side of the nest before the adult bird cuts it loose. It's not pretty - although you get to see what a newly hatched chick looks like.
Top 10 Must See Things in Beacon Hill Park, Victoria BC - Vlog 117
In today’s vlog we are going to show you the top 10 must see things in Beacon Hill Park. Tripadvisor rates it the #5 thing to do in Victoria. It was our #1 Free thing to do in Victoria BC.
Make sure you have your walking shoes because Beacon Hill Park is 200 acres, which is about 1/4 of the size of Central Park in New York city. As Victoria locals ourselves, we often see people standing outside the perimeter of the park, confused, not sure what to do. That is why we made this video, to give our friends who are visiting from out of town an idea of how to #1 walk through the park and #2 what landmarks you might want to check of your list as you walk through the park.
We start our walking tour through Beacon Hill Park at the corner of Southgate and Heywood Streets close to Cook Street Village.
Follow this map:
We entered the park through Arbutus Way and started our tour with the #10 Gary Oak Meadows. Gary Oaks are native to southern Vancouver Island and grow in meadows where they have exposure to sunlight and wind.
#9 Goodachers Lake and the Turtles on the Log. The turtles are not native to the lake. They are exotic pet store turtles brought over by Victoria residents. This is why the population goes up and down, because they cannot reproduce in Goodachers lake.
#8 Stone Bridge is a beautiful location for a photoshoot and the Great Blue Herons come back to nest here every year.
(look up for Blue Herons)
#7 Moss Lady - I have a previous video with the step by step making of Moss Lady with one of the creators Dale Doebert. Moss Lady was inspired by the Mud Maid erath sculpture found in the Lost Gardens of Heligan near Mevagissy in Cornwall.
#6 Mini Bridges - The winding paths, flowers, trees and wildlife are a feast for the eyes through Beacon Hill Park.
#5 Sequoia Tree Across from Beacon Hill Children's Farm - This tree is easy to climb and has been worn smooth by all the travelers who have sat to have their picture taken on its branches.
#4 Running of the Goats or Goat Stampede happens everyday at 10:10 am in the Beacon Hill Park Children’s Farm.
#3 World's Tallest Totem Pole - June 30, 1956, the world’s tallest totem pole, a Story Pole was erected in Beacon Hill Park. Carved by a team led by Mungo Martin, Kwakiutl tribal chief and renowned carver, When installed, it was the world's tallest free-standing story pole, now Albert Bay BC claims the world's tallest totem pole.
#2 Beacon Hill Lookout - Climb up to the top of Beacon Hill for a view of the Olympic Mountains.
#1 Visit Terry Fox at Mile 0 Memorial Site. The Mile 0 marker is the start of the over 8,000 km Trans-Canada Highway that spans the entire length of Canada. For all you gen-xers who grew up doing the Terry Fox Run in Canada, this is where Terry Fox would have finished his cross country run to raise money for cancer research. I still get teary eyed every time I pass the statue.
Bonus: Ice cream at Beacon Hill Drive Thru
If you made it all the way to the end of this video, give yourself a thumbs up and put, “I want ice cream too” in the comments!

Stone Bridge, Beacon Hill Park, Victoria, BC
The pond lilies of Fountain Lake, wind in the willows, the stone bridge and rhododendrons were part of our bike tour of Beacon Hill Park in May. The Scottish landscape architect, John Blair, constructed this rustic stone medieval bridge in 1889.Beacon Hill Park (Originally Meeacan to Songhees FN)
High winds threaten hummingbird nest, moma stays put.
High winds that stayed around for the better part of two days stripped leaves, bent branches, and forced this hummingbird to stay sitting in the nest to keep her two eggs from falling to destruction
Trafalgar Park in Oak Bay
Today we visited Trafalgar Park in Oak Bay. We entered from the trailhead atop King George Terrace and followed the trail to where it ends at the beach. There's another trailhead with parking where Maquinna Rd. meets Lorne Ter. at the bottom of the hill. This parking can be accessed by vehicle from Hollywood Crescent road. c. Herons Back in Beacon Hill Park
VICTORIA - Almost three years to the day that they disappeared, four Great Blue Herons are building nests in Beacon Hill Park.
Bird enthusiasts say it's late in the season for the birds to start finding a home. They say their other nests could have been damaged by the heavy winds in the past few weeks, or predators may have scared them away.
The heron rookery in Beacon Hill Park was abandoned three years ago after a group of bald eagles attached nests - killing chicks and eating hundreds of eggs.
City staff are reminding people to keep dogs out of the area. Their barking can scare the herons away from their nests.
Great Blue Herons are listed as a 'Species of Concern' by Endangered Wildlife Canada.
Island View Beach
Island View Beach in Central Saanich has become a place for dogs & their owners. Birders are concerned because some birds have few places left to rest, eat, nest & raise their young & are under stress from the dogs.

Anderson Hill Park shoot - behind the scenes.
An early morning shoot at Victoria's Anderson Hill Park in Oak Bay. Andy Bryce and I were there to capture demo footage for a CE course we're in the process of developing. We were attempting to make a decent quality video with a consumer level camera and were pleasantly surprised by the outcome.
Andy's finished montage is here:
The camera used to capture the behind the scenes photos/footage was also a consumer grade unit - a Canon PowerShot A720IS.
