S. Korea to remember those who died for democracy in 4.19 Revolution

A memorial ceremony commemorating the fifty-ninth anniversary of the April 19th Revolution is just getting started at the April 19th Memorial Cemetery in Seoul.
In 1960, thousands of demonstrators, mostly college students, took to the streets of Masan, Gyeongsangnam-do Province,…to rise up against Korea's then-military dictatorship led by Rhee Syng-man.
Later, on this day in 1960, police in Seoul opened fire on protestors killing around 180 and wounding thousands.
Under the theme of 'Democracy, the path we walk together,'... around 25-hundred people, including the prime minister and the Patriots and Veterans Affairs minister have gathered to remember the brave spirits.
At this year's ceremony, 40 honorees will receive awards for the first time in seven years.

불의에 저항했던 선열들의 숨결이 깃든 곳입니다.

이처럼 강북구는
독립운동과 민주화와 관련된 다양한 역사 자원을
보유하고 있습니다.

앞으로 이 일대가
역사 문화 예술의 중심지로 재탄생됩니다.

서울시가 오는 2022년까지
예산 574억 원을 들여
도시재생사업을 추진하기로 한 겁니다.

사업 대상지는
4.19사거리 일대와 우이동 일대
총 62만8천㎡입니다.

낙후되고 특색 없는 가로경관을
역사 문화예술 특화거리로 조성하고,
국립4.19민주묘지 재생 공론화 사업을
추진할 예정입니다.

북한산국립공원과 연계한 테마 공간을 조성하며,
예술인 자원을 활용한
문화 예술 특화 상권도 조성합니다.

주거정비가 아닌 문화관광 예술을 활용한
중심시가지 도시재생이다 보니 거기에 맞춰서

생활 편의 시설을 개선하고,
환경 정비를 통해
골목길 활성화 사업도 추진합니다.

강북구를 찾는 방문객은 연간 257만 명.

새로운 역사 문화 중심지로

Korea's political leaders pay tribute to April 19th Revolution

It's April 19th here in Korea,... a day when Koreans remember the April 19th Revolution.
The movement was Korea's first-ever democratic uprising against the government,... taking place on this day in 1960.
Tens of thousands of people, mostly college students, rose up against election fraud by the then-President Rhee Syngman .
Around one-hundred-80 people died and thousands were injured in clashes with police.
The uprising led to Rhee stepping down as the country's autocratic leader one week later.
To remember the day,... President Park Geun-hye paid her tributes this morning at April 19th National Cemetery in northern Seoul.
The leaders of Korea's main political parties also attended ceremonies to commemorate the day.
The ruling Saenuri Party's interim leader Won Yoo-chul and the interim leader of the main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea, Kim Chong-in... were both at the ceremony held at the cemetery.
Leader of the minor liberal Justice Party was also one of the attendees.
Co-leader of the centrist People's Party, Ahn Cheol-soo,... will soon pay tribute at a memorial set up in Democracy Park in the southern port city of Busan.

SOUTH KOREA: ANTI GOVERNMENT MARCH IN SEOUL

Thousands of students cheered as pictures of President Clinton and President Kim Young-sam were burnt on Friday during an anti-government march in Seoul.

The rally coincided with the 36th anniversary of the April 19 uprising which toppled the government of Syngman Rhee, South Korea's founding president.

The image of President Clinton sported a cowboy hat and the picture of the South Korean President had the numbers 03 marked on his forehead.

The numbers in the Korean language phonetically sound his name, Young-sam.

Students threw fire bombs at the large wooden board featuring the two Presidents' caricatures.

They then stamped symbolically on their faces before setting light to the placard.

About 2,000 students took part in the rally calling for President Kim to fully account for political funds he used in the 1992 election campaign.

Some claim Kim used illicit funds to support his campaign, a charge he denies.

They also demanded that President Clinton withdraw 37 thousand American troops stationed in South Korea.

Anti-American feeling is strong among students after the 1980 Kwangju massacre which left 240 pro-democracy activists dead.

Students claim Washington condoned the military bloodshed.

Friday's rally through the city coincided with the 36th anniversary of a 1960 nationwide student uprising that toppled the corrupt government of Syngman Rhee, South Korea's founding president.

About 400 government officials and family members attended the commemorative ceremony at the April 19 Uprising Cemetery in Seoul on Friday.

As the Yum Kwang Girl's High School band played the April 19th Song, the South Korean Prime Minister Lee Su-song and other government officials laid chrysanthemums on the table in front of the portraits of the dead.

Relatives of students who died during the uprising shed tears as the solemn ceremony took place.

At the April 19 Cemetery, 227 portraits of those who died during the
uprising are displayed in remembrance.

In 1960, students marched through Seoul declaring the March 15 elections, in which President Syngman was elected, a fraud.

Police opened fire on students demanding an end to the government leading to the deaths of 227 people

Although the massacre was more than three decades ago many victims' families continue to make offerings of rice wine and food at their graves.

국립4.19묘지 찾은 참배객... 호국영령 넋 기려[천지TV]

제53주년 4.19혁명 기념식이 오늘(19일) 오전 국립4.19묘지에서 열렸습니다.

기념식은 '통합으로 하나된 나라, 희망찬 대한민국'을 주제로 정홍원 국무총리를 비롯해 4.19혁명 단체 회원과 시민 등 2000여명이 참석한 가운데 진행됐습니다.

이날 국립묘지를 찾은 참배객들은 4.19혁명의 정신을 기리고 호국영령들의 넋을 위로했습니다.

April 19th here in Korea is commemorated as one of the foundations of Korea's democracy movements.
In 1960, citizens' protests for freedom were violently suppressed by the government,... 180 citizens were killed and thousands were wounded,... fighting for Korea's civil society and democracy.
To remember their brave sacrifice, around 25-hundred people including the leaders of the country's ruling Democratic Party and opposition parties gathered at the April 19 Memorial Cemetery on Friday.
Under the event's theme of 'Democracy, the Path We Walk Together,'...South Korea's Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon emphasized why we need to commemorate the day.
Democracy doesn't come for free. Our country's democracy has been achieved through struggles and sacrifices. The sovereignty of the Republic of Korea shall reside in the people, and all state authority shall come from the people.
And at this year's ceremony, the descendants of 40 honorees who sacrificed their lives during the movement have received awards on the honorees' behalf.
This is for the first time in 7 years,... after files related to another democratic movement on March 15th were revealed in 2016.
March 15, 1960 was the date of another massive demonstration in Masan city,...in response to corrupt elections.
So from 1960 to today,... a total of one-thousand one-hundred and 21 honorees have received awards.
In addition to the ceremony in central Seoul, the commemorations will take place nationwide including in the cities of Busan and Gwangju,...along with ceremonies and cultural events.

As we mentioned, April 19th was commemorated by Koreans from all walks of life.
But, for those who lost their loved ones in the revolution 56 years ago... the day was remembered with a bit of sadness and a whole lot of pride.
Shin Se-min has more on what's been marked as a defining moment in Korean democracy.

I was told that many people passed away on this day.

I first had it confused with other memorial date,… but I'm familiarizing myself with the April 19 Revolution day as I pass by the cemetery.

It's a day remembered by many Koreans,… a day when descendants pay tribute to those who fought for the democracy of the nation.
56 years ago on this day,… thousands of demonstrators, mostly college students, unhappy with electoral frauds and government corruption, took to the streets in Masan, Gyeongsangnam-do Province,… to rise against the government led by then former President Rhee Syng-man.
A violent protest took place, marking the beginning of an uprising led by labor and student groups,… and which eventually overthrew the autocratic First Republic of South Korea under Rhee.
More than half a century later,… there are those that remember the historic and painful moments that reshaped the country's history.

For the past two decades, I've dropped by to visit the deceased,… because I've been through that time,…it's just unfair.

As for those who lost a member of their family, it's a day that they don't want to think about.

He was smart. We didn't think much about the protest,… and it just tears me apart every time I think of my brother and that day when he took the bullets.

The April 19th Revolution is a day remembered differently by many,... but against many sacrifices and pain, it marked a defining moment for democracy to flourish in Korea.

They may differ in policy lines, disagree in TV debates and at times, even take jabs at each other in negative campaigning... but at the April 19 National Cemetery on this Wednesday, the contenders had no discord... but laid wreath, bowed, and remembered the democratic spirit.

My family and I had no idea my brother was part of such a revolution back then. We had thought he was just in schoool, studying hard. But, ever since we learned that he was one of the revolutionaries, we've been nothing but very proud.


Hundreds of those who sacrificed their lives fighting for what we enjoy today are laid to rest here at the April 19th National Cemetery. And South Koreans, at least once a year, remember the movement, the spirit in April of 1960 that nurtured the soil for South Korean democracy.

Korea's political leaders mark 56th anniversary of April 19 Revolution

It's April 19th here in Korea,... a day when Koreans remember the April 19th Revolution, the nation's first-ever democratic uprising against the government took place in 1960.
Marking the day,... the President and lawmakers alike solemnly paid respect to the victims.
Park Ji-won for us this afternoon.
President Park Geun-hye marked the 56th anniversary of the nation's democratic movement at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning... by laying flowers at the April 19th National Cemetery in northern Seoul.
The leaders of Korea's main political parties also commemorated the occasion at ceremonies later in the day.
The ruling Saenuri Party's interim leader Won Yoo-chul, the interim leader of the main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea, Kim Chong-in... and the leader of the minor liberal Justice Party... all attended a ceremony at the national cemetery held later on Tuesday morning.
The co-leader of the centrist People's Party, Ahn Cheol-soo,... paid tribute at a memorial in Democracy Park in the southern port city of Busan.
All four parties also issued special comments... praising the democratic legacy of the movement... and vowing to carry on the spirit of those who led it.

The day commemorates the tens of thousands of people, mostly college students, who rose up in 1960 against the election fraud and corruption committed by Rhee Syngman ., who was president at the time.
Around one-hundred-80 people died and thousands were injured in clashes with police,... and
the uprising led to the end of the Rhee administration's autocratic rule one week later.

Looking back on Korea's June Democracy Movement

한국의 민주주의를 이룬 6월 민주 항쟁
This year marks 30 year since the June Democratic movement here in Korea.
The demonstration that demanded direct presidential election laid the foundation to the democracy the nation enjoys today.
Lee Unshin takes a deeper look into the significance of the historic uprising.
June represents Korea's hope for democracy... as it was in this month three decades ago... that some 5 million brave men and women demanded a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
This movement was not the first protest against dictatorship, but on June 10th, 1987,... when the military regime of the time announced -- on its own -- who would be the country's next president,... citizens had had enough.
They took to the streets to protest the government of then-leader Chun Doo Hwan, and to demand direct presidential elections.
Despite struggles with the police that left many wounded,... the June Democratic Movement spread among workers, farmers and students in more than 30 cities.
And on the 19th day of resistance, the regime gave in, announcing plans to restore direct elections.

As Korea marks 30 years since the movement, the sacrifices that helped establish a constitutional democracy are honored in ways that go beyond memorial ceremonies.


Through academic and cultural projects, we make sure the spirit of the movement is carried on by the generation responsible for the nation's future. Acknowledging past mistakes is what will prevent them from happening again.

SKorea, US army attend ceremony in Seoul

(30 Apr 2016) A change of command ceremony for the US Army General in charge of leading the US forces in Korea took place on Saturday at the Yongsan US military base in Seoul.
US Army General Vincent Brooks took over from US Army General Curtis Scaparrotti, who had been leading the UN Command (UNC), Combined Forces Command (CFC) and US Forces Korea (USFK) since October 2013.
Approximately 100 people took part in the ceremony, including Vice Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Paul Selva and South Korean Defence Minister Han Min-koo.
Before assuming the new position in the US Forces Korea, Brooks was the commanding general of the US Army Pacific.
He also served with the USFK in the 1980s.
Scaparrotti will assume a new position as the commander of the US European Command (EUCOM).
Approximately 28,000 US soldiers are currently stationed in South Korea.
