LIFE YARD (The Heart of Fleet Street) - [DDRS02E02]
Check out the story of our adventure on my blog
Welcome back to another episode of #DownDiRoad!
In this adventure I head out to Fleet Street in Parade Gardens, Kingston to check out Life Yard & the home of Paint Jamaica. I hold a reasoning with a few members of Life Yard to really get an understanding of their movement & what they are trying to achieve in the community with their outreach programmes.
Enjoy!
I do not own any music in this video!

Jamaica Kingston - Fleet Street, Caribbeans largest street art gallery, community centre Life Yard
In downtown Fleet Street you can find Caribbeans largest street art gallery and the community centre Life Yard. Ensure you go by car and take a local guide as downtown is struck from high criminality. Life Yard is host to paint the street art. It is a cultural development and skill centre organised by a group of Rastafarians. They use the grounds to grow crops and use them to cook meals on site. They host events such as workshops and community building fairs all in benefits towards the children in the community and neighbouring communities. They continue to organise outreach programs teaching youth about agriculture, music, visual arts, crafts, reading & literature, history and health. Life Yard has become a centre for many to lounge and volunteer.

Zj Sparks Interviewing Eyeball and Sabukie From Life Yard On Fleet Street, Kingston
Fleet Street in Downtown, Kingston, can be considered the Wynwood of Jamaica. The walls on the street are lined with magnificent art and it also houses Life Yard. Life Yard is spearheaded by Eyeball. It is a Community Based organisation which is bringing about positive changes through Art, Agriculture and Education.

Progressive Vibes At Life Yard In Downtown Kingston, Jamaica
South Side, a once gang and crime plagued community in downtown Kingston, Jamaica was transformed in 2014 after the building of a community centre known as Life Yard at 41 Fleet Street, in Parade Garden and the start of the 'Paint Jamaica' project by Marianna Faraj and students from the Edna Manley Art College.
Ever since this transformation, the South Side community has managed to maintain a level of balance and peace due to the hard work of Life Yard members who were once involved in the violence in this community, and now work towards improving the social dynamics of the community, as well as promoting eco living.
This success has drawn national attention with recognition from Jamaica's tourism board and a humanitarian award, as well as regular visits from some of Jamaica's well known music artists to film music videos.
Here's a short video I made with Life Yard member Shango Alphanso on the story behind Life Yard and how they help improve the community.

city life 2:4 | together against violence
Bennetlands is a ghetto suburb in the heart of Kingston, Jamaica - home to five thousand inhabitants. Half of them are under 25 and over 2000 of them unemployed. Once, despite the poverty, Bennetlands was a peaceful place, with daily life revolving around the four main pillars of the community - its primary school, two churches and the S-Corner Clinic which provided health care, support and education for school drop-outs. But in the 1980s war broke out in the region - with rival 'corner' gangs fighting a vicious turf battle over Bennetlands' one high street, terrorising the neighbourhood and preventing children from going to school. Then one of the gang leaders - the 'dons' in the local parlance - was shot outside the S-Corner clinic, and the community decided it had had enough. Together Against Violence recreates the story of how the local leaders joined forces to challenge the local gangs to heal their difference and work together to restore a sense of community in one poor Jamaican neighbourhood.
