On the 16th of July, 707 Operations Inc operated the 'Best of British Suburban Tour'.
The tour was operated by two locomotives built in the United Kingdom. Steam locomotive R707 (built 1951 at the North British Locomotive Company, Glasgow, Scotland) and F208 (built 1951 at The Dick Kerr workshops in Preston, England).
The special ran in push-pull formation between Newport, Aircraft, Caroline Springs and Mellbourne West Tower.
The tour was significant for F208 as it was its first tour on the mainline since October 3rd, 1999.
History of F208:
The F class locomotives were ordered by the Victorian Railways as part of 'Operation Phoenix' and F208 entered service on the 2nd of December 1951.
F208 was one of 16 Diesel Electric F Class shunting locomotives purchased from The English Electric Company that year. 10 were bought by the VR (F310-319) and the other 6 locos were bought by the State Electricity Company (SEC 1-6). The locomotives were built at The Dick Kerr workshops in Preston and are primarily based off the Standard Gauge British Rail Class 11 the main difference of the F being the wider Broad Gauge.
F208 entered service in the VR under the number F317, it had many duties in the yards around Melbourne ranging from being the Jolimont and Spencer Street yard shunter to the Port Melbourne dock pilot. 7 years later in 1958, F317 was renumbered F208 and carried a Red and Gold Livery. The change in class number was warranted when the VR purchased 4 of the SEC’s 6 units in 1958. Having the locos renumbered from SEC 3-6 to F 320-324 would have clashed with the numbering of first order T class which were introduced in 1955. With the class leader of the T classes having a number of T320, therefore the entire F fleet was renumbered into the 200’s (201-216).
In the mid 60’s F208 saw yet another change and was re-painted in the more well known blue and gold livery, still having shunting duties at Spencer Street yard until the early 80’s. From then until the end of its service in the VR it was in service as a yard pilot at Dynon and North Melbourne and was nicknamed ‘The Donk” (Dynon Donk). The locomotive was retired from service July 1987.
Years after it was retired from VR service, F208 made an appearance in July 1987 during the Dynon Depot Open Day painted in its original delivered livery of black and red, this was considered to be its last time in service. It was then serviced and stationed at Spotswood Workshops in the late 1980’s and was used as the shunter for the formerly known ‘Plan R’. 10 years later F208 was renumbered back to its original number F317, before its Industrial sidings tour in 1999.
Since then it has been in and out of service being used as a shunting locomotive at Newport Workshops for 707 Operations. Once again the locomotive was withdrawn from operation for 2 years to be serviced, repainted, re numbered and restored to working condition.
Congratulations to all staff, volunteers and members past and present for dedicating their time and skills to bring F208 back to its full glory.

707 Operations - Tastes of the Goulburn
On the 15th of October 707 Operations Steam locomotive R707 ran a trip up to Seymour for the Tastes of the Goulburn which they have every year. I went down to Newport Workshops to get about four or five shot before heading off to Spotswood and catching it at Southern Cross and riding the train to Seymour, we also found a spider which was scary (not really to me) after arriving into Seymour I decided to go down to the SRHC Open Day with a few friends and we also had DERMPAV alongside us when we departed for Melbourne, it was such a hot day on that day, after arriving into Southern Cross I headed down to Newport, all though I couldn’t get any shots on the platform I decided to go to the stair platform which it a one minute walk from the station. Hope you enjoy this video.
