What is the 798 Art District in Beijing, China?
The 798 Art District in Beijing is one of the main contemporary art zones in China. Today, the area is overrun with tourist and commercial art, but it is still a great place to visit if you are into art. There are many galleries and shops to buy prints and interesting modern art. We really enjoyed our time exploring this contemporary art scene and getting a feel for Chinese modern art.
More on the 798 Art District:
798 Art Zone, or Dashanzi Art District, comprise a complex of 50-year-old decommissioned military factory buildings boasting a unique architectural style, located in Dashanzi, Chaoyang District of Beijing, that houses a thriving artistic community.
The area is often called the 798 Art District or Factory 798 although technically, Factory #798 is only one of several structures inside a complex formerly known as 718 Joint Factory.
The buildings are within alleys number 2 and 4 on Jiǔxiānqiáo Lù (酒仙桥路), south of the Dàshānziqiáo flyover (大山子桥). In recent years, it has been the main venue for the annual Beijing Queer Film Festival and Beijing Design Week.

Andy Warhol: Contact, an exhibition of groundbreaking film, photography, and interactive installations by one of the twentieth century’s most influential artists.
A highlight of the show is an installation of Warhol’s Silver Clouds, glimmering pillow-like shapes that float gently through the exhibition space. When the work was first shown at New York’s Leo Castelli Gallery in 1966, viewers were free to touch and move among the Clouds, making the work one of the earliest examples of an immersive, interactive art installation.

Rediscovering 798 Art District Beijing
798 was an amazing place when I first discovered contemporary art in China. It has been almost ten years since my last visit to 798. It’s time to pay another long overdue visit to the new 798!
New Face of China: 798 Art Zone 中国之新:798艺术区
In China, 798 does not simply represent the figure, it is also the cultural symbol organically integrating the modern arts, architectural space, cultural industry, historical context and the city living environment. The video takes the past, present and future of 798 Art Zone as the main clue, relates the stories of the figures living and working or having lived and worked here and exhibits the cultural phenomena featuring co-existence of the vanguard consciousness and traditional sentiment, equal stress on the experimental touches and social responsibilities and all-win of spiritual pursuit and economic planning as well as the social influence upon urban development, production and consumption patterns etc.
This is an episode in the series of documentary New Face of China, which was produced by China Broad View Cultural Communication Center in 2013 with the effort to record the news of current China. For more in this series, please check out the play list at

798 Art Zone: A Closer Look - TripAdvisor Beijing App Review
Since I have been to Beijing a few times I wanted somewhere off the beaten path that would give me a chance to take a look at a subculture living in broad daylight. 798 Art Zone is outside the 4th ring so the chances of you happening on this district are pretty remote.
Before I get into my experiences checking out contemporary art, architecture and culture in this historically interesting location let me go over the best apps for walking tours in Beijing.
TripAdvisor is our tried and true favorite, it's our go to when we land in any city and it's the app we feature in the video above. There is a city guide the ability to have offline maps with compass that will help you navigate offline is killer. You can also download walking tours as well as restaurant reviews. Though you'll learn in the video that 798 is so far out there weren't any reviews!!

798 Art Zone & Caochangdi | Black Buddha (Beijing)
You can look, but don’t touch
Beijing is certainly ripe with opportunities to witness the artistry and craftsmanship of China’s great dynasties, but if you are looking for the excitement of China’s modern art movement, we have a couple of recommendations off the beaten path.
798 Art Zone (or Dashanzi Art District) is a sprawling 230,000 sq. meter complex filled with galleries, art exhibition spaces, artists’ studios, design firms and retail (fashion, restaurants, etc.). A decommissioned military factory from the 1950s, 798 Art Zone features a Bauhaus-influenced design born from a collaboration between China and East Germany. Who would have known that the “form follows function” aesthetic would provide the perfect backdrop to showcase China’s contemporary art scene. The outposts of established international galleries like TOKYO GALLERY (BTAP), PACE and GALLERIA CONTINUA attract the cognoscenti, but if you are looking for some attainable cool, the retail store of the ULLENS CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY ART (UCCA) is worth a visit.
Another nearby artistic hotbed is Caochangdi – a ten minute cab ride from 798. Translated as “grasslands” in Mandarin, Caochangdi is a true artists community, home to a diverse group of residents, including migrant workers, farmers, students and artists, most notably, Ai Weiwei. Unlike the more uptown, commercialized feel of 798, Caochangdi displays more of a raw emotion and connection to humanity that certainly inspires creativity amongst its residents. THREE SHADOWS PHOTOGRAPHY ART CENTRE and GALERIE URS MEILE are among Caochangdi’s notable attractions.
Whether you are looking for inspiration, a space for quiet contemplation or just to get out and see something new, there is something here for you.

Beijing 798 Art Zone and history, China
What started as an extension of military and industrial cooperation between the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China with the involvement of East Germany has now become one of Beijing's most alternative areas, full of art, graffiti, studios, exhibitions, hip cafes, restaurants and bars. This is 798 Art Zone!
