Movie Makers – Mobile Filmmaking Summer Camp, Perth 2019
Perth Summer Tech Camp, August 2019
Movie Makers was a three day summer school for 8 - 16 years olds
11 Young people took part, We spent two and a half days learning about making films on mobile devices – we used iPads with Filmic Pro for filming, iMovie for editing and iMotion for time-lapse and animation. The final half day was spent presenting our films to our families. The winners were awarded a Moscar (mini Oscar)!
We did our training at AK Bell Library and then made our films on location at Perth Museum and Art Gallery. Dr Nicky Small told us all about the Jacobites and gave us a tour of the Jacobite Clans exhibition. This gave us plenty to go on for crafting our stories.
Jon Gill ran the workshop for Perthshire Creates.

Digital Maker_Spaces Crowdfunder
Culture Perth and Kinross are looking to create 4 new Digital Maker_Spaces in rural Perthshire. We’ve got funding from LEADER, which is a European initiative that supports rural communities and business networks. It supports organisations in rural areas to allow them to be stronger, more confident and inclusive, and help develop or contribute to the community economically.
What is a Digital Maker_Space?
Digital Maker_Spaces have the most up to date tech, including large format printers, Photoshop & 3D printing facilities and allow people in the community to use them. Most importantly they are completely free and in Perth we have one in the AK Bell Library.
As Cultural Perth and Kinross, we are in the heart of the cultural community, connecting peoples’ ideas, knowledge and collections. Developing 4 rural spaces across Perthshire allows us, as an organisation, to be embedded within the community. With the right tools and skills – we have the potential to become a world leading rural region, with creativity at our heart.
How are we doing this?
In order to help us achieve this, we need your help. We need to raise £5,000 to help match our target and we are doing this through Crowdfunder. With Crowdfunder we are offering some ‘money-can’t-buy’ rewards in order to help us achieve our goal.
These include getting discount on researching your family history, 3D printing and even getting hands on with our collection. We’ve also got an opportunity to go behind the scenes of our exhibitions and spend time with our curatorial staff.
We really want this Crowdfunding project to succeed and it’s really all or nothing! We hope you will be tempted by our rewards, and if not, we’d ask that you share this email with a friend or colleague who might be!
CWU TV News | Perth Scottish Independence Meeting
With less than a year to go until the people of Scotland vote in a referendum that asks whether Scotland should be an independent country the CWU ran several meetings across Scotland to debate the issue. The meetings allowed the Executive and members the opportunity to field questions and engage in discussion with the campaign teams - 'Yes Scotland' and 'Better Together' as well as debate amongst themselves. CWUTV met up with CWU Deputy General Secretary Andy Kerr and the representatives of both camps in Perth after the first of the meetings.

Prizes for young Perth and Kinross artists inspired by the wilds
Budding young Perth and Kinross artists inspired by nature have been awarded for their talents. For Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust schools’ art competition, pupils from across Perth and Kinross were invited to submit a piece of artwork depicting a species of British game or wildlife in its natural habitat. After working hard on their creations for the competition over the autumn term, over 30 prizes were given to young artists aged four-18 from across the region earlier this week. The nominees and their families and teachers were invited to the AK Bell Library where the winners were announced. The artwork was highly praised by the judging panel, consisting of representatives from Blackadders Solicitors, The Royal Highland Educational Trust and Julian Jardine from Julian Jardine Art Studios. All the prize winners’ entries are to go on display to the public in the AK Bell Library until Friday, December 20. Iona Laing, who organises the competition on behalf of the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust, said: “It was once again very special to receive so many works of art and excellent descriptions - the time and effort put in by the pupils is great to see. “We really enjoyed seeing how well the pupils engaged with the trust’s work. “There was a great selection of red squirrels, bird life, mammals, and some excellent invertebrates - all in their natural habitats. “It is with great thanks to the local teachers that we are able to run this competition, their efforts and enthusiasm are key to its success. “Thank you also to Blackadders, Julian Jardine, RHET and Perth and Kinross Council for their continued support.” New for 2019 there was also a creative writing competition asking pupils to describe their creation, telling why they had made that choice and what was special about the creature they had chosen. A spokesperson for the event added: “Congratulations to the overall winner for the primary school competition, Clara Holt Brook from Arngask Primary for her wonderful otter, showing real movement and striking detail. “And congratulations to Sana Javed of Kilgraston School with her family of swans in acrylic showing beautiful reflections.” The spokesperson added: “Dottie Buchanan from Kinnoull won the 50 best words for the primary category with Hannah Braithwaite of Perth Academy winning the senior creative writing category. “Well done to all those who entered the competition and learned more about Scotland’s game and wildlife.” Prizes for young Perth and Kinross artists inspired by the wilds

Country Cartoons - The Farmer's Strong at East Dron
From our Country Cartoons Animation Workshop, held on 16th September 2017, we present 'The Farmer’s Strong at East Dron' by Sam, Oscar, Ailsa, Charlotte, Dennis, Katie, Stella, Sadie, Elizabeth and Elize.
The workshop used a soundtrack of recorded interviews describing what life was like in Perthshire’s rural past. Our budding young animators then created the following stop-motion film!
The story comes from Perth and Kinross Sound Archive, an audio collection which records changing ways of life in rural Perthshire. If you are inspired to find out more, the collection is available to researchers in Local & Family History, AK Bell Library, Perth.
The workshop was delivered in partnership with Scotland’s Sounds and the Scottish Graduate School for Arts & Humanities.

Rattray....Who do we think we are?
This Living Communities Project film was the creative response to the larger civic health partnership pilot that was being carried out in Rattray in 2013/2014 by NHS Tayside. A series of community and schools sessions took place which focused on the history and heritage of the area where pupils and community members posed and tried to answer the question who do we think we are? The Living Communities team worked in partnership with the Blethers local history group, community learning and development, SCYD and Rattray Primary School and were assisted by the local history officer at AK Bell Library.
'Hidden Treasures' Event Guest Speaker Dr. Nicola Cowmeadow
Dr. Nicola Cowmeadow from Perth & Kinross Council & the AK Bell library in Perth speaks about 'Hidden Treasures, Hidden Histories'.
Her research takes us on a journey into documents pertaining to Scottish Gypsy Travellers life histories in peace time & war. Looking closely these documents from various archives reveal not only SGT hardship but also the mood & reaction of the settled community towards this Scottish ethnic minority.
