Landour institutions that are famous are Prakash's shop, for its cheese and jams (and occasionally bread and cinnamon rolls!), Deodar Hotel (Dev dar Woods), the Landour Language School, Kellogg church, Woodstock school, St. Paul's cathedral, the Jabbarkhet bhooth bangla, the cemetery, the north face walk, doorbin point at Lal Tibba, Char dukaani and much much more. More recently, Sanjay Narang's Rokeby Manor has also become something of a modern institution in Landour, with the great food at Emily's.
But Prakash at Sister's Bazar / Bazaar still makes the best apricot, strawberry, plum and backberry jam, markets local mountain honey, makes the best peanut butter and when he's in a good mood - the finest cheddar cheese as well! So the next time you're there, humour Anil and he may just run up a batch of cheese for you, if you stay long enough for it!
Landour, a small cantonment town contiguous with Mussoorie, is about 35 km (22 miles) from the city of Dehradun in the northern state of Uttarakhand in India. The twin towns of Mussoorie and Landour, together, are a well-known British Raj-era hill station in northern India.

There are four Raj-era churches: the Kellogg’s Church, the church of St.Paul in Char Dukan, the commercial area,the Methodist Church in Landour Bazaar, and St.Peter’s Church, atop Landour Hill; the last two are in disuse.

In the second episode of our Uttarakhand food tour series, we have traveled to two most famous tourist destinations Mussoorie and Landour. The former is a popular hill station is in the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayan range, that was discovered in 1815. The latter is a military cantonment that is considered to be the part of 'greater Mussoorie'. In this food trail we were accompanied by Lokesh Ohri, who is a noted anthropologist, cultural activist and flaneur.
Before leaving for Mussoorie from Dehradun, we stopped at Sri Prakasheswar Mahadev Mandir to pray. It is the place where Anubhav used walk up to during his school days for having the Prasad. Hence walking in search of good food has been there from the very beginning.
Our first stop in Mussoorie was Lovely Omelette Centre that serves probably one of the best omelettes not only in the region. The stall is a favourite among tourists and locals alike. We tried their famous cheese omelette that was indeed an amazing omelette with bread and cheese slices. The perfectly done omelette was a perfect thing to try in the pleasant weather of the town.
Next stop was Chick Chocolate, where we had landed to try the Stick Jaw Toffees. These sugar and milk based toffees are so sticky in nature that the just binds your teeth on eating them.
From there we went to The Rice Bowl or Amitash Restaurant, another celebrated name in the town. They are popular for Tibetan, Bhutanese and Thai cuisine. Here we tried Chicken Mokthuk and Chicken Baikrapao. Check out the details in the video. Both the dishes were quite delicious.
Our next stop was Landour, which was half an hours drive from Mussoorie. There our halt was Char Dukan, a place where there are a lot of old and new eateries. We first went to Tip-Top tea point for their fabled pancake and bun omelette. The cinnamon pancake was phenomenal while the bun omelette was decent too. We also got to hear some stories about the place from the genial owner.
Next we were at Anil’s cafe in the same line whose Nutella Waffles is a best selling thing. The waffles were warm and crisp and the gooey and decadent Nutella on top just elevated its irresistibly.
The last stop of our trail was A Prakash & Co at Sisters Bazaar, a name that everyone in Landour reckons with when it comes to jams, preserves and some bakery items. We loved the cinnamon roll with orange ginger marmalade. Do try their products if you visit the place.
Soon it was time to wrap up this pleasant food tour that was full of international dishes and their gratifying flavours, picturesque and postcard perfect vistas and some intriguing anecdotes from the bygone era. Next, see the Sister's Bazaar tri-junction covered in snow, with the palm tree near Anil Prakash's house having turned totally white... Woodstock School students have a snowball fight at Oakland Cottage just beyond the Landour Language school and church, and beyond Ellengowan cottage.
Mr. Gulab Ramchandani's house as seen from the main road... Shamrock estate, part of the erstwhile Childer's Lodge estate (now called Nahata Estate).
This year's winter snowfall has set a record of sorts! We normally don't experience more than a few inches of snow at a time in the Landour-Mussoorie region. This year, we have had a sustained two weeks of repeated snowfall which has turned to ice on the steep and narrow road leading up from Ruskin Bond's house and Momo's Doma's Restaurant up to Char Dukani and Rokeby Manor. Some of the best SUV's have not been able to handle the icy conditions and skiddiness and have backed off to Mussoorie.
Regardless, Landour was left looking lovely and aloof! So enjoy our imagery from the 6th to the 9th of January 2012...
Landour in the snow and cold. Freezing weather in Landour brings the temperature down to about -2 degrees Celcius. On the 6th of January 2012, the maximum temperature for the day was 2 degrees Celcius! The maximum standing snow was around 1 foot. It has not snowed like this in Landour for about 8 or 9 years and because of so much snow there were no cars going up to Landour and cars were skidding, everything was white and people were giving up on their visits up the hill. If all the cars would not have skidded and the roads turned icy, Landour would not have been so empty and quiet like it was but would instead have been crowded with 'snow tourism' from the plains!

DAY 7 - Woodstock Class of '67 50th Reunion
Classmate Marlin Schoonmaker planned an exciting 50th reunion for our class. We met for a few days in Mussoorie. Next, part of the class hiked in the high mountains while others traveled in India. Everyone then met at the Glenburn Tea Estate in Darjeeling owned by classmate Sudhir Prakash.

Dr. Shekhar Pathak is an Indian historian, writer and academician from Uttarakhand. He is a founder of People's Association for Himalaya Area Research (PAHAR), established in 1983. He is a former professor of History at Kumaun University, Nainital and a Nehru Fellow at the Centre for Contemporary Studies at Teen Murti in New Delhi. He was awarded the Padma Shri by Govt. of India, in 2007. He remained professor of History at Kumaun University in Nainital for two decades Once every decade, in 1974, 1984, 1994 and 2004, he undertook a padayatra, a trek from Askot-Arakot. In 2007, he began a three-year project to study the Himalayan people along with Magsaysay Award winner, Chandi Prasad Bhatt, traversing the Himalayas, from Leh to Arunachal Pradesh. He also co-wrote with Dr Uma Bhatt, Asia ki Peeth Per (Beyond Asia's Back), a biography of Himalayan explorer, Pundit Nain Singh Rawat. He has remained the founder editor of the annual journal published by People's Association for Himalaya Area Research (PAHAR), a Nainital-based a non-profit organization for research on Himalayan people, established in 1983.
Mussoorie Writers' EXPERIENCE THE HIMALAYA: A MOUNTAIN FESTIVAL (Nov. 1-4, 2012) celebrated exploration, natural history and mountain culture. Events ranged from a photographic exhibition to a just-released film, The Old Breed, about Steve Swenson's recent ascent of the highest unclimbed summit in the world - Saser Kangri II. Swenson himself, one of America's toughest climbers, spoke about the adventure of this expedition, along with the values and philosophy that drives him to reach extreme heights. A large audience of students, teachers and visitors enjoyed the mountain poetry of Gulzar, accompanied by Pavan Varma and Sukrita Paul Kumar.
Woodstock's Parker Hall was filled with the lyrical folk songs of Nagaland, performed by the Tetseo Sisters. Italian alpinists, Manolo and Herve Bermasse spoke of the challenges they overcome on the mountains and showed films about their perpendicular exploits, while Rekha Bhardwaj sang mountain lyrics together with Bollywood hits. Dr. Charles Clarke, one of Britain's most eminent mountaineers, discussed mountain literature as well as the important traditions of Tibetan medicine. Controversy, politics and intrigue are all a part of Himalayan history and Capt. M. S. Kohli, who led India's first successful ascent of Everest, revealed first-hand details about the joint CIA and Indian Intelligence operation on Nanda Devi during the 1960's.
As part of the same panel, Prof. Shekhar Pathak discussed the legacy of Pandit Nain Singh Rawat, one of Uttarakhand's heroic surveyors, who mapped Tibet in the 19th Century. While an international gathering of climbers spoke of pushing themselves to the limits of endurance on vertical surfaces of ice and rock, Viraf Mehta unveiled prehistoric narratives and images etched on the stones of Ladakh, ancient petroglyphs of snow leopards and ibex. The festival brought together scholars, scientists, authors, artists and mountaineers, including chief guest Loveraj Singh Dharmshaktu, who has climbed Everest four times, as well as many other major Himalayan peaks. Rupin Dang spoke to local idiocyncratic Landour wildlife and Wilderness Wanderings while conservation and responsible use of mountain environments was another theme, explored by eco-activist Ishita Khanna and wildlife biologists Pankaj Chandan and Rajarshi Chakraborty of WWF.
On Sunday, Nov. 4, as part of the festival, more than 200 runners competed in the first Mussoorie Half-Marathon, along Mussoorie's Mall Road to a turnaround point at Everest House and a finish line at Woodstock School. Over the four days of the Mountain Festival, participants and audience members drew inspiration from a variety of presentations and performances, all of which emphasized the educational significance and opportunities of our Himalayan heritage.
