Puffing Billy - Forward View - The Complete Route - Gembrook to Belgrave (Australia)
The surprising success of the recently posted Driver’s Eye View video using video footage taken
from the front of the engine prompted me to consider posting the footage taken by a camera fixed just above rail level. For those who have already seen the 4 Part series of videos covering Puffing Billy, you may recognize some of the shots used in those videos, repeated in this one.
This video covers the whole line from Gembrook to Belgrave, although just before Monbulk Creek Trestle the view switches to a camera mounted on the locomotive hand rail due to the batteries in the track level camera running out of power.
The view is unusual, giving a totally different prospective of the route as we leave the pleasant suburbs of Gembrook, passing into open countryside before plunging into the eucalyptus trees of the Wright Forest, our train crosses wooden trestles bridges and passing pretty wayside stations along the way.

Summer in Belgrave
Summer in Belgrave is part of a Symphonic Composition that I composed in 2010 called Four Seasons in Belgrave and was done to demonstrate the four different faces of the area in which I live, that is Belgrave Victoria - Australia. Summer in Belgrave was composed as a result of the powerful imagery of Bushfires that threatened my home, and the township of Belgrave in 2009.
This was my first attempt at a Classical based composition, despite having been involved in the production and playing of electronic music since 1976.
This piece is most definitely dedicated to the Country Fire Authority (the C.F.A), who are manned by local men and women volunteers, and without whom many of us would not be here.
Thank you to you all!
Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group
The people of the Dandenong Ranges region in Victoria banded together when the big banks walked away from Upwey in 1998. By the end of that year they had established only the second Community Bank company in Australia and it has flourished ever since. Starting in Upwey, the Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group branched out to Belgrave, Cockatoo, Olinda and Emerald and Marysville agencies, providing everything by way of business, personal and investment banking products - and one thing they don't ... most of the bank's profits go back into the community. The message is simple, according to the Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group. Bank with them, and they'll support the local community. Since 1998 the Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group has given over $1.3 million in grants and sponsorships to more than 280 different local groups, to schools, sporting clubs, emergency services, the Angliss Hospital, Fernlea House and a host of other community groups. $1Million has also been set aside for four major community projects. Not to mention the $890,000 in dividends to the mainly local shareholders who have backed the bank from the start. To date, that means there has been more than $3 million in community gifting.

Australia’s Puffing Billy Railway 2019 - Part 4 – Lakeside to Belgrave
In the last of this series taking passengers on a return trip between Lakeside and Belgrave we enjoy more unusual views from the locomotive, passenger seat and line-side, including a selection of different views showing various trains on the famous fifteen span Monbulk Creek wooden trestle bridge carrying the railway over both the Creek and Belgrave - Gembrook road.
Once again I am grateful to Puffin Pete, Jeff Evans and the locomotive crew for their help in making this video possible.
Special thanks to Peter Stowell for allowing me to reproduce three photos showing G42 Garratt and NA Class N8 locomotives double heading a train across Monbulk Trestle Bridge.

Melbourne Puffing Billy Train
THE HISTORY OF PUFFING BILLY
The Puffing Billy Railway was one of four low-cost 2’6″ (762mm) gauge lines constructed in Victoria in the early 1900s to open up remote areas. The present line between Belgrave and Gembrook. It is the major part of the line which opened on 18 December 1900. The 18.2 mile (29km) Upper Ferntree Gully to Gembrook narrow gauge line was always a scenic attraction to the people of Melbourne, who began travelling on excursion trains for day trips and weekend holidays in the hills during the railway’s earliest years.
In 1953, a landslide blocked the track and, because of operating losses, the line was officially closed in 1954.
The present-day success of Puffing Billy has evolved from the humble beginnings of its rescue by determined members of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society, which was formed due to the public interest.
Volunteers with the blessings of the Victorian State Government and the assistance of the Citizens’ Military Forces, by-passed the landslide and reopened the line from Belgrave to Menzies Creek in 1962, Emerald in 1965, Lakeside in 1975 and finally to Gembrook in October 1998.

Australia’s Puffing Billy Railway 2019 – Part 3 – Gembrook to Lakeside
Having traveled on Puffing Billy from Belgrave to Gembrook where we visited the local bakery for a delicious steak and cheese pie, we make our way back to the town station where our train is waiting to take us back to Belgrave. The friendly locomotive crew kindly allowed me attach a couple of small cameras to their locomotive to give a very different view of the line on our return trip. We also take a look at the excellent model railway located close to Lakeside station.
Once again I am grateful to Puffin Pete, Jeff Evans and the locomotive crew for their help in making this video possible.

Puffing Billy 50th Anniversary of the re-operning of the Belgrave to Menzies Creek (Part 1)
Puffing Billy Railway Was one of four low-cost 762mm (2'6) gauge lines constructed in Victoria in the early 1900's to open up remote areas. In 1953 a Landslide blocked the track and because of operating losses, the line was closed .
Public interest resulted in the formation of the PUFFING BILLY PRESERVATION SOCIETY ( PBPS ) in 1966. The PBPS volunteers by-passed the landslide and re-opened the line to Menzies Creek on 28th July 1962.
This was a truly significant day which saw years of hard work and commitment from PBPS volunteers brought to fruition..
Running a commemorative train from Belgrave station to Menzies Creek station using the same Locomotive ( 7A ) and hauling the same carriages which operated on 28th July 1962.

Passport And Visas Requirements To Enter The UK
Please note: Following the recent referendum vote for the UK to leave the European Union (EU), there are currently no changes in the way people travel to Britain. The following guidelines still apply:
If you're planning an adventure to the UK, depending on your nationality and your reason for visiting, you may need to organise a visa.
If you're an American, Canadian or Australian tourist, you'll be able to travel visa-free throughout the UK, providing you have a valid passport and your reason for visiting meets the immigration rules.
Citizens from some South American and Caribbean countries as well as Japan are also able to travel visa-free around the UK.
European Union citizens, non-EU member states of the EEA (Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland), Switzerland, and members of the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCT) do not need a visa to enter the UK.
If you have any further visa questions visit the official UK government website.
You can dial 999 to reach either the police, fire and ambulance departments.

Puffing Billy Australia - Morning Wood Train
On the 28th June, 2014 the Puffing Billy Railway ran a special wood train service from Belgrave to Gembrook and return. The train, hauled by diesel locomotive D21, departed Belgrave at the break of dawn at 0700. Due to poor whether conditions and limited personal available the train was shortened.
On the return journey D21 paired up with Na locomotive 14A from Lakeside back to Belgrave.
