Contemporary art scene flourishing in Kazakhstan
(18 Sep 2018) LEADIN
A famous cinema from the Soviet era has been turned into a contemporary arts centre in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
It comes at a time when the contemporary art scene in the country is flourishing.
STORYLINE:
Almaty's iconic Tselliny cinema, a Soviet modernist gem, is on track to being fully restored and re-opened as a centre for contemporary art in 2020.
The centre is holding its inaugural exhibition 'The Beginning', exploring the history of the building and the architectural context of the town.
The man behind the project is Kazakh businessman Kayrat Boranbayev, who, according to the Tselliny centre's head of projects Djamilya Nurkalieva, sought to create a valuable public space.
He hopes to educate the wider public about contemporary art by enabling them to interact with multi-media art and exhibitions.
In 2017, the decision was taken to turn this centre into a centre for contemporary art. What does it mean, a centre for contemporary culture? It is educational activities, film-showings, lectures, workshops for children, it is the education of both the professional and wider audience, adds Nurkalieva.
Backers of the project say that the centre has generated a lot of public interest and is greatly needed.
Such centres are fundamental for the creation of dialogue between contemporary art, contemporary artists, culture and the general audience, says one of the curators of The Beginning exhibition, Ekaterina Golovatyuk.
Contemporary Kazakh art is currently flourishing as well as gaining international attention, being shown in cities across Europe and the United States.
Architect Asif Khan believes the centre will be a great place for global tourists to visit to understand more about the history and identity of the area:
It's a most appropriate layering, that a Soviet building, can be rethought in this contemporary era and we open it to artists to redefine its identity and our own identity, again and again and again, he says.
There are many buildings in the city that are examples of Soviet modernist architecture, like the Medey sports complex.
32-year old local artist Nurbol Nurakhmet says art in Kazakhstan is developing and growing.
In an interview in his studio, Nurakhmet says that the internet has had a huge impact on art as well as society, and points to how the tech-savvy younger generation has embraced new forms and digital art.
Co-curator of 'The Beginning' exhibition, Meruert Kalieva says the city is more vibrant because of the expanding art scene.
I think that right now is an excellent time for such a centre to open. Because there is a great demand from people, there is a great interest amongst young people, but before this there wasn't one place where one could gather those who like culture, arts, cinema, where one could hold seminars and discussions, she says.
