One of the most magnificent geologic features in the world is the Rainbow Mountain of the Peruvian Andes. The mountain is striped with colors ranging from turquoise to lavender to maroon and gold.
The reason we see the rainbow coloration in the stratigraphic layers of the Rainbow mountain is largely due to weathering and mineralogy. Red coloration of sedimentary layers often indicates iron oxide rust as a trace mineral. Similar to how a nail will rust and turn red when oxidized, sediments that are iron rich will change when exposed to oxygen and water. This, in combination with uplift and tectonically driven crustal shortening has tilted the sedimentary layers on their side exposing stripped stratigraphic intervals.
The different coloration is due to different environmental conditions and mineralogy when the sediment was originally deposited and subsequently diagenetically altered. The introduction of goethite or oxidized limonite will introduce a brownish coloration to sandstones. The bright yellow coloration could be due to iron sulphide as trace minerals within the pore cement. In addition, chlorite will often color sediments varying shades of green dependent on diagenetic history and concentration.

Inca Trail Peru | Huaynas Expeditions - Tour Operator
The network of Inca roads (Qhapaq Ñan) is considered one of the best engineering works that exist; helped turn a small family caste into the largest empire in the Western Hemisphere. The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu combines history with its new purpose, being one of the best walks in the world.
One of the 7 wonders of the world
Part of the 23,000 kilometers (approximately 14,000 miles) of roads built by the Incas in South America. It is the most famous route for hiking in Peru and possibly the most spectacular in the Americas. Each year, more than 25,000 walkers from around the world walk along the 43 kilometers of this cobblestone road built by the Incas that leads to the amazing citadel of Machupicchu located deep in the jungle of Cusco. The trip begins in the town of Pisqacucho, at kilometer 82 of the Cusco - Quillabamba railway line and takes 3 to 4 days of intense walking. The route includes an impressive variety of altitudes, climates and ecosystems that goes from the punas to the cloud forest. Travelers will cross two high altitude passes (the highest will be in Warmiwañuska at 4,200 masl) to complete the walk with a magical entrance to Machupicchu through Inti Punku or Puerta del Sol.

Here we are hiking to the top (5060 meters or 15180 feet). It gets a bit tough, but we manage to get there with a bit of help from some amazing strangers.
