From Dead Zone to Fertile Delta - The Romanian Danube
The Rebirth Of The Danube Delta (Sep 1997)
Grandiose communist schemes turned the Danube River Delta into a desert-like dust bowl. Now, it's making a promising comeback.
Subscribe to Journeyman here:
In the 1980s, Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu decided to transform Europe's richest land into a breadbasket to feed Eastern Europe. Instead, his system of dykes, dams and artificial lakes wreaked massive environmental destruction. By the time of Ceausescu's demise in 1989, 40,000 ha of the Delta had been destroyed. With the disappearance of the fish, birds and rare mammals went the traditional lifestyle of the Lipovenes, ethnic Ukrainians who'd fled Russia, and who relied on the wildlife of the Delta - especially the giant sturgeon. Today, weed-filled fields still remain useless for farming, while fish collecting stations and salt mines lie disused. However, the Delta is making a remarkable recovery, thanks to an innovative World Bank Programme. Birds and plants are returning and although the sturgeon haven't recovered, the Lipovenes believe they too now have a future on the Delta.

STORYLINE
US President George W. Bush arrived in Romania on Tuesday ahead of a key NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) summit set for April 2-4, in Bucharest on Wednesday.
Bush was accompanied by his wife, First Lady Laura Bush, who waved to officials and journalists, alongside her husband.
The US President flew in from Ukraine, where he has been speaking to leaders about a roadmap to NATO membership.
At the NATO summit Bush is expected to push to get Ukraine and Georgia on the road towards membership in the military alliance.
In a speech he plans to deliver at the summit on Wednesday, Bush is widely expected to say that beginning the process of giving Ukraine and Georgia a membership action plan, would encourage both countries to stay on the path of democracy.
Also, it would let them know they will be welcomed into the institutions of Europe, he is expected to argue.
Germany and French oppose putting Ukraine and Georgia on the NATO path, as does Russia.

O zi specială. A special day.
Hi, this is Mihnea. Welcome to Romanian Hub – The Ultimate Romanian Language Learning Portal.
In this episode of Learn Romanina Vlog I will tell you about a special day. O zi specială.
But before I start, I just want to say “thank you” for the awesome feedback you’ve given on the first Learn Romanian Vlog video. I do believe that it’s by far the best language video I have produced for Romanian Hub.
But, let’s go back to our lesson. O zi specială. A special day.
Why is it special? Because I live in Thailand. Locuiesc în Thailanda.
Where in Thailand? I work in Bangkok. Lucrez în Bangkok.
What do you do? I’m a teacher at an international school. Sunt un profesor la o școală internațională.
And something happened today at school. We celebrated Wan Wai Kru, or Teacher Respect Day, or in short known as Teacher’s Day. Ziua Profesorului.
Sometime at the beginning of the school year, students in Thailand pay respect to their teachers. Wan Wai Kru, Teacher’s Day, Ziua Profesorului, is traditionally held on Thursday. Joia. On Thursday.
And since it’s a special Thai celebration, I wore my Thai shirt. Am purtat cămașa mea thailandeză.
Being a special occasion, students give flowers to their homeroom teachers. But, this year, I didn’t get a flower, I got a cactus. Am primit un cactus. I got a cactus (as a present).
And it so happens that this is actually quite perfect for me. After my 51-day trip in the US, I came back this summer in Bangkok with the plan of buying a small cactus (and a bonsai). The cacti I saw in Arizona were just amazing and I really fell in love with these plants.
Am vrut un cactus. I wanted a cactus.
Am primit un cactus. I got a cactus (as a present).
Am un cactus. I have a cactus.
And that’s the end of the second Learn Romanian Vlog. O zi specială. A special day.
Let me know in the comments section bellow if you have any plants at home and what’s your favourite flower? And, don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE. In that way you won’t miss the next episode.
Ceau. This is Mihnea, signing out from Bangkok.

GET TO KNOW ME| Learn Romanian Vlog #9
Află mai multe despre mine. Get to know me
Hi. This is Mihnea. Welcome to Romanian Hub, the Ultimate Romanian Language Learning Portal.
In this episode of Learn Romanian Vlog, I’ll tell you a few hopefully interesting things about me. This topic was suggested by one of you who found it enjoyable to learn Romanian with me and to get to know me better.
Actually, a literal translation of “Află mai multe despre mine.” would be “Find out more (things) about me.”
So, let’s start. Hai să începem.
Here are 5 things you didn’t know about me:
#1 Did you know that…
Când am fost tânăr am avut un dalmațian.
When I was young, I had a Dalmatian.
His name was Ajax. By the way, they’re not the brightest dogs out there. Eventually, when it grew up we gave it to a Dalmatian breeder who lived in the countryside.
#2 Did you know that...
După ce am terminat liceul, am vrut să mă fac ninja.
After graduating from high school, I wanted to become a ninja.
Long story short, I had (and still have) an obsession with Japan, and I wanted to become a ninja / warrior /fighter. But, my father convinced me to go to uni and save these ninja dreams for later. The thing is, I still want to be a ninja...
#3 Did you know that...
Am reprezentat România la tir cu arcul în competiții internaționale din Asia.
I represented Romanian at archery in international competitions in Asia.
A few years ago I was at the top of my archery shooting form and I even had a few medal wins both as an individual archer and together with my Thai team. I also shot for Romanian in the World Cup in Shangahi and the Archery Grand Prix in Bangkok.
#4 Did you know that...
Îmi place să călătoresc, în special în Asia.
I like to travel, especially in Asia.
The moment I left Romania in 2002, I caught the travel bug. Since then, I’ve travelled thought Thailand extensively, and I’ve also been to Malaysia, Laos, Singapore, Nepal, China, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, and India. To some of these destinations I’ve been more than once!
#5 Did you now that...
Sunt interesat de numismatică, deci colecționez bancote și monezi.
I’m intrested in numismatics, so I collect bancnotes and coins.
I have a pretty big collection of banknotes and I can say, a pretty heavy, collection of coins. I usually collect coins and banknotes from the countries I visit, but I also inherited from my grandfather and father a decent collection of banknotes, some of which are over 100 years old!
And that’s the end of Learn Romanian Vlog. Află mai multe despre mine. Get to know me. Now it’s your turn! Let me know something interesting about yourself in the comments section below. And, don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE. In that way you won’t miss the next episode.
