Australian Chamber Orchestra’s (ACO) 2005 collaboration with artist Bill Henson, Luminous, was a ground-breaking, cross-genre musical and visual feast. Celebrating 10 years since their last performance of Luminous, they’re bringing it back, revived and refreshed, with indie Israeli-Australian singer-songwriter Lior.
This revival features new imagery and music spanning Britten and Janáček to R.E.M., and the centrepiece is Pēteris Vasks’ pensive violin concerto, Distant Light. Nostalgic, melancholic, at times manic and beautifully evocative, Luminous is an arresting, multi-sensory journey.

BEETHOVEN (arr. strings) String Quartet, Op.130 | Australian Chamber Orchestra & Richard Tognetti
Beethoven was deeply influenced by Bach, studying his scores in the library of the Archduke Rudolph. He was driven to explore the fugal form, in works such as the Fugue in D major – his only late work completed for string quintet – and notably his Grosse Fuge, which The New Yorker music critic Alex Ross called “a musicological Holy Grail”, and “the most radical work by the most formidable composer in history”.
In this tour de force directed by Richard Tognetti, the Grosse Fuge takes its original place as the finale of the String Quartet Op.130, a work that veers from torrential passion to aching beauty.
Recorded at the Sydney Opera House on Sunday 15 May 2016.
Also as part of the concert program:
BEETHOVEN (arr. strings) Grosse Fugue, Op.133

Bach - Contrapunctus 1-4 (The Art Of Fugue) - Australian Chamber Orchestra & Richard Tognetti

Australian Rugby World Cup 2003 - Opening Ceremony : James Crabb & Richard Tognetti
James Crabb (accordionist) & Richard Tognetti (violinist) joined forces back in 2003 to produce this quite uniquely beautiful little ditty entitled Calling the World, specially created for the Rugby World Cup Opening Ceremony, 10th October 2003.
Stood, slap bang in the middle of the Telstra Stadium in Sydney, Australia, the two musicians perform, live, in front of a packed stadium of 81,350 fans.
The performance in its entirety lasted about 2-3 minutes and still left the audience wanting more. Alas, I only recorded the last 70 seconds of it, but the whole performance lives strong in the memory.
Given that the footage is 8 years old and was recorded on a long-play VHS tape, the picture and sound quality is not superb (apologies for the lost of picture between 17-22seconds).
I still think this is a truly brilliant bit of footage which deserves to be shared with the world once more.

The Reef 'Hypnosis' - by Richard Tognetti
The Reef is a celebration of surfing, film and live music by the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
This preview kicks off later in the day in Western Australia. Through a flight across the dunes, a discovery and a near dream... 'Hypnosis' is a new composition by Richard Tognetti for The Reef, with vocals by Satu Vänskä and technical assistance by Joseph Nizeti.
ACO artistic director and lead violin, Richard Tognetti, collaborated with producer/director Mick Sowry and director of photography Jon Frank, to create an evocation of an epic stretch of coastline in the north west of Western Australia. Using a mythic day to symbolise our lives in all their trials and glory, The Reef music consists of twenty one individual compositions, some original, some amongst the greatest works in the classical tradition.
The ACO performs The Reef (Revisited) in Sydney on 12 February before taking off for an USA tour that includes performances in Los Angeles, New York and Richmond, from 16 to 20 February.
